Governor Kim Reynolds has signed into law a bill that opponents say will expose transgender people and other lowans to discrimination.
It creates explicit legal definitions of female and male based on people's reprodutivem organ at birth, rejecting the idea that a person can trasition to another gender.
Both the Lowa House and Senate approved the bill on Thursday even as hundreds of opponents filled the state's capitol, chating slogans and testifying against it.
It takes effect July 1.
