Summary:
Jesus tells His disciples that the Holy Spirit will glorify Him by revealing His truth to them. He then speaks of His impending departure and return, which confuses the disciples. Jesus explains that while they will grieve for a time, their sorrow will turn into joy—just as a woman experiences pain in childbirth, but joy once the child is born. He assures them that after His return, their joy will be unshakable, and they will be able to ask the Father directly in His name, receiving what they ask so their joy may be complete.
Teaching:
In today’s passage, Jesus repeatedly says “a little while.” The disciples couldn’t understand what He meant. That’s because they did not believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection, so they couldn’t comprehend His words.
Even now, those who do not truly believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection cannot understand Jesus’ timing. Because they don’t understand Jesus’ time—God’s time—they cannot endure it and stumble.
People often cannot endure this “little while.” Many go to church but do not see Jesus. Yet some, after “a little while,” do come to see Him. Perhaps “a little while” is a journey of faith that all of us must go through.
“And on that day you will not question Me about anything.”
In that “little while” when we see Jesus, knowledge will be complete, love will be complete, and all things will be made perfect. There will be perfect joy. Therefore, now is the time to come before God the Father and ask Him. We are to pray in Jesus’ name.
