ZenMod is an overhaul which attempts to create a more historically accurate unit roster for both common and clan specialty units, as well as rebalance all units so that each has a distinct purpose, as was the case with the original Shogun. To install, simply drop into Shogun's data folder, no user script required, if standard version. (Darthzen and Mutantmod require a user script however.)
This mod is not compatible with mods that alter:
-Land battlefield gameplay mechanics
-Units, whether altering stats or adding new ones
-Unit card mods (one is already included, based off JFC's unit cards)
Mods that alter audio-visual aspects, or naval mechanics (if standard version) should be compatible.
Recommended campaign/battle difficulty: Hard
Reccomended unit size: Large
CHANGELOG:
-Adjusted battle variables so battles last longer and are thus more tactical/realistic
-Upkeep increased marginally
-Ashigaru should be less comparitively cost effective than in vanilla
-Related to above, units slowed down in movement, infantry moreso than cavalry
-Renamed units, ships, buildings, etc. to have japanese names
-Removed all ahistorical units and added historical units that were not in game
-Rearranged clan faction bonuses to be both more balanced and more historical
-Gave each clan faction a new, unique "hero" unit (1 hero type only per faction)
-Adjusted troop types/classes for, hopefully, better AI building and use
-Adjusted experience upgrades for buildings (generally higher)
-Rebalanced all unit stats so all units have a useful, distinct role (spear/defense, naginata/offense, etc.)
-Related to above, more logical and 'realistic' statting, i.e. naginata and spearmen both same armor values
-Increased garrison sizes slightly and adjusted to use new units
-Added color-coded unit cards for all units (based off JFC's mod)
-Boosted ashigaru unit sizes
-Slightly improved guns and slightly downgraded archers
-Added many abilities to units where appropriate, particularly new hero units
-Slightly toned down anti-cav bonuses

beta RELEASE for ZenMod (preview)

Note: do *not* use with mods that:
-Alter battlefield gameplay elements
-Alter or add units or their stats
-Unit card mods (one is already included)
The above is a link for a preview release of ZenMod, for me to get some feedback and testing before I release the final version, which will work with the full campaign. For now, only custom battles are entirely functional. To reiterate, the goal of ZenMod is to:
1) Re-balance the unit rosters by removing redundant or inefficient units, re-statting existing ones, and adding new ones to fill unused but needed roles.
2) Attempt to re-create the feel of the original Shogun, in a rough sense, by creating a similar roster and altering clan specialties.
3) Make shogun much more historically accurate by replacing units that would not exist historically with those that should be in the game as well as adjusting other elements of the units.
This is all to be more interesting, and fair, for the player(/s) but also to, hopefully, make the AI handle the units better, both in terms of building armies and using them on the battlefield. Although some units are removed, I believe the roster is about the same size, perhaps more than vanilla. Anyway, try it out for now, while I work on implementing it into the campaign, which should be in a few days to a week.
old post
Hey all. Some of you may be familiar with my mod "Age of Discovery" for M2TW. Well, I thought I would have a go at modding S2TW as well, as there is nothing out there like what I want to do at the moment, however I've found it's far more tedious to mod current TW games than earlier ones. Hence, I thought I'd see how much interest there is for my mod idea before finishing it up, especially as there are already quite a few overhauls and I have a feeling mine would have a very limited niche.
The goal of the mod is threefold, in order of priority from top to bottom:
1) Create a much tighter balance in gameplay by removing redundant units, which will also hopefully improve the way the AI builds and uses armies.
2) Try to bring back the feel from the original Shogun where there few units but every one was important and had a use.
3) Make the roster more historical by adding or removing units and altering the clan bonuses to try to be more accurate.
It's called ZenMod to reflect the design principle that removal of the extraneous leads to elegant simplicity. Since most complain about the "lack of variety" I was hesistant to even start work on it, but on the other hand many are also complaining about how useless certain units are and especially about how ahisotrical some things are (katana units, uesugi warrior monk specialty, etc.). The roster I decided upon is as follows, with clan specialities listed below that, as well as their unique units. I wasn't sure about leaving "heroes" in but they add something intriquing to gameplay, and can be sort of justified historically, so I have limited them to each clan having only one type of hero unit.
-Yari Ashigaru (long yari), Naginata Ashigaru, Yumi Ashigaru, Teppo Ashigaru
-Yari Samurai (short yari), Naginata Samurai, Yumi Samurai, Teppo Samurai
-Keikihei Samurai (short yari), Juukihei Samurai (long yari), Kyukihei Samurai (mounted archers), Hokihei Samurai (dragoon)
-Yari Sohei (short yari), Naginata Sohei, Yumi Sohei, Teppo Sohei
Chosokabe: Superior bowmen; Chosokabe Kyudosha (bow hero)
Date: Superior heavy troops (i.e. naginata); Date Kesshitai (off. no-dachi hero)
Hattori: Kisho training (light footmen); Hattori Iga-Mono (kisho ninja)
Hojo: Superior siege units; Hojo Onna-Bugeisha (def. naginata hero)
Mori: Superior sohei; Mori Yamabushi (off. naginata hero)
Oda: Superior ashigaru; Oda Ashigaru-Gashira (off. spear hero)
Shimazu: Superior (foot) samurai; Shimazu Kensei (def. no-dachi hero)
Takeda: Superior cavalry; Takeda Uma-Mawari (cavalry hero)
Tokugawa: Superior gunners; Tokugawa Sogekihei (kisho sharpshooters)
Uesugi: Superior spearmen; Uesugi Hatamoto-Kachi (def. spear hero)
(Everything is all statted out, I "simply" have to punch them in and get them working.)
Edit: Should also add naginata and heavy units will be treated as sword units for Teching up purposes.
