39. To the Right Person
In the one state of ours that is a shire,
There is a District Schoolhouse I admire
As much as anything for situation.
There are few institutions standing higher
This side the Rockies in my estimation—
Two thousand feet above the ocean level.
It has two entries for coeducation.
But there’s a tight shut look to either door
And to the windows of its fenestration,
As if to say mere learning was the devil
And this school wasn’t keeping any more
Unless for penitents who took their seat
Upon its doorsteps as at mercy’s feet
To make up for a lack of meditation.

“To the Right Person” (1947)
The title of this sonnet suggests that Frost did not
expect everyone who read the poem to get it. What
he has to say about the District Schoolhouse is
critical.
He describes an institution of higher education
that he at first claims to admire. The school, which
is nameless, is on “[t]his side” of the Rockies and is
better than any other nearby. It “has two entries for
coeducation,” he explains, meaning that it accepts
both men and women. But he says that there is a
“tight shut look to either door” and to the windows
as well, and the locks seem to suggest that “mere
learning” is “the devil.” The students are compared
to penitents who go to a confessional. They must
come to school as they might remorsefully come to
a superior’s feet for mercy: “To make up for a lack
of meditation.”
Clearly the depiction is not a pleasant one, either
for this school or for formal education in general,
which Frost often criticized despite his being a part
of it. As a child, Frost played at being sick in order
to get out of going to school and he “never fit comfortably
into any academic setting,” referring to
organized education as “never [his] taste.” Frost, it
seems, did not like much of anything that was organized,
given the analogy to religion’s penitents here
(Parini, 16). Which school Frost describes is suspect,
but perhaps the “right person” knows.
The poem was first published in the October
1946 issue of the Atlantic Monthly, at the end of
Frost’s prose piece “The Constant Symbol.” It had
the subtitle “Fourteen Lines.” “To the Right Person”
was later collected in Steeple Bush and also
appeared in The Poems of Robert Frost (1946). See
also “The CONSTANT SYMBOL.”
