Summary:
Peter is standing and warming himself. He is asked two more times if he is one of Jesus’ disciples, and both times he denies it. After his third denial, a rooster crows—fulfilling Jesus’ earlier prophecy about Peter denying Him three times.
Teaching:
Let’s look at the place where Peter denied Jesus. It was in the courtyard of the high priest, and then he denied Jesus while warming himself by the fire, not far from where Jesus was being interrogated. Peter's denial of Jesus in the very place where Jesus was suffering reflects our own lives as well.
At church, we preach, lead public prayers, and teach - professing our faith in many ways. Yet when something happens, we too may end up denying Jesus. Not just once, but multiple times.
We must recognize that we have weak faith and are bound to fall. However, most people are overly confident in their own faith. Those who were once so sure of their belief, when time passes and circumstances change, often find that their confession no longer holds. Without realizing it, the evil and weakness within us rise up, and we forget our former confessions and live cowardly lives.
Just like the crowing of the rooster, God still uses many events to help us see and hear—to awaken us by His grace. When He speaks through such moments, we must listen and, like Peter, wake up.
