POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, Third Sunday of Lent, St Peter's Square, 8 March 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Since the first centuries of the Church’s history, the dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, the healing of the man born blind and the resurrection of Lazarus illuminate the path of those who, at Easter, will receive Baptism and begin a new life. These great Gospel passages, which we read beginning this Sunday, are intended for the catechumens to help them on their journey to become Christians. At the same time, these passages are heard once again by the entire community of believers to help them to be more authentic and joyful Christians.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 교회 역사 초기부터 예수님과 사마리아 여인의 대화, 날 때부터 눈먼 사람을 고치신 일, 그리고 라자로를 살리신 일은 부활절에 세례를 받고 새로운 삶을 시작할 사람들의 길을 환하게 비춥니다. 주일 아침에 우리가 읽는 이 위대한 복음 구절들은 그리스도인이 되는 여정에 있는 세례를 준비하는 이들을 도와줍니다. 또한 이 구절들을 다시 듣는 신자 공동체 전체에게는 그들이 더 참되고 더 기뻐하는 그리스도인이 되도록 도와줍니다.

Indeed, Jesus is the response to our thirst. As he suggested to the Samaritan woman, the encounter with him stirs in the depths of each person “a spring of water gushing up to eternal life” ( Jn 4:14). How many people in the entire world are searching even today for this spiritual spring!  “Sometimes I am there too,” writes the young Etty Hillesum in her diary. “But more often stones and grit block the well, and God is buried beneath. Then he must be dug out again.” [Etty Hillesum, Diary, London 1985, 58-59.]  Dear friends, there is no energy better spent than that dedicated to freeing our heart. For this reason, Lent is a gift: we are starting the third week and now we are able to intensify the journey!

참으로 예수님께서는 우리의 목마름에 대한 응답이십니다. 사마리아 여인에게 말씀하셨듯이, 그분과의 만남은 각 사람의 마음 깊은 곳에서 “물이 솟는 샘이 되어 영원한 생명을 누리게” 합니다. (요한복음 4,14) 오늘날에도 전 세계에서 얼마나 많은 사람들이 이 영적인 샘을 찾고 있습니까! 젊은 에티 힐레숨이 그녀의 일기에 이렇게 적었습니다. “때때로 저도 그곳에 있지만, 돌과 모래가 우물을 막아, 하느님께서 아래에 묻혀 계신 경우가 더 많습니다. 그러면 다시 파서 하느님께서 나오시게 해야 합니다.” (에티 힐레숨 일기, 런던 1985, 58-59) 사랑하는 친구 여러분, 우리의 마음을 자유롭게 하는 데 쏟는 에너지보다 더 가치 있는 에너지는 없습니다. 이러한 이유로 사순절은 선물입니다. 이제 셋째 주를 시작하며 우리는 이 여정을 더욱 깊이 있게 할 수 있습니다!

It is also written in the Gospel that: “His disciples came [and] they were astonished that he was speaking with a woman” (Jn 4:27). They are reluctant to accept his mission as their own, so the Master has to prompt them: “Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting” (Jn 4:35). The Lord still says to his Church: “Lift up your eyes and recognize God’s surprises!” In the fields, four months prior to the harvest, one sees practically nothing. But there, where we see nothing, grace is already at work and its fruits are ready to be gathered. The harvest is great: perhaps the workers are few because they are distracted by other activities. Jesus, on the other hand, is attentive. According to custom, he ought to have simply ignored that Samaritan woman; instead, Jesus speaks with her, listens to her, and shows her respect – without a hidden agenda and without disdain.

복음서에는 또한 “바로 그때에 제자들이 돌아와 예수님께서 여자와 이야기하시는 것을 보고 놀랐다.” (요한 4,27) 고 기록되어 있습니다. 제자들이 예수님의 사명이 자기들의 사명이라고 받아들이는 것을 꺼려하기 때문에 예수님께서 다음과 같이 그들을 일깨우십니다. “너희는 ‘아직도 넉 달이 지나야 수확 때가 온다.’ 하고 말하지 않느냐? 자, 내가 너희에게 말한다. 눈을 들어 저 밭들을 보아라. 곡식이 다 익어 수확 때가 되었다.” (요한 4,35) 주님께서 여전히 당신의 교회에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다, “눈을 들어 하느님의 놀라운 일들을 알아차려라!” 추수하기 네 달 전의 밭에는 실제로 아무것도 보이지 않습니다. 그러나 그곳에 우리가 아무것도 보지 못하는 그곳에 은총이 이미 내려와 그 열매가 거둘 준비가 되어 있습니다. 추수할 것은 많습니다. 일꾼들이 적은 것은 그들이 다른 일에 정신이 팔려 있기 때문일 것입니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 집중하십니다. 관습대로라면 예수님께서 그 사마리아 여인을 그냥 무시하셔야 했을 것입니다. 그런데 예수님께서 그녀에게 말씀하시고 그녀의 말에 귀를 기울이시고, 숨겨진 의도나 경멸의 마음 없이, 그녀에게 존중을 표시하십니다.

How many people seek in the Church this same sensitivity, this availability! And how beautiful it is when we lose track of time in order to give attention to the person we are encountering, as we see in this passage.  Jesus was so spiritually nourished by God’s desire to reach people on the deepest levels that he even forgot to eat (cf. Jn 4:34). Thus, the Samaritan woman becomes the first of many female evangelizers. Because of her testimony, many from her village of despised and rejected people came to meet Jesus, and also in them faith bubbled forth like pure water.

얼마나 많은 사람들이 교회에서 이와 같은 세심함과 이와 같은 접근성을 찾고 있을까요! 그리고 이 구절에서 보듯이, 우리가 만나는 사람에게 온전히 집중하기 위해 시간 가는 줄 모르는 모습은 얼마나 아름답습니까! 예수님께서는 사람들의 가장 깊은 곳까지 다가가고자 하시는 하느님의 열망으로 영적으로 충만하셔서 식사하는 것조차 잊으셨습니다. (요한 4,34 참조) 그리하여 사마리아 여인은 수많은 여성 복음 전도자 중에 첫 번째가 됩니다. 그녀의 증언 덕분에 멸시받고 배척받던 마을 사람들 중에 많은 사람들이 예수님을 만나러 왔고, 그들에게서도 맑은 물처럼 믿음이 솟아났습니다.

Sisters and brothers, today let us ask Mary, Mother of the Church, to be able to serve, with Jesus and like Jesus, those men and women thirsting for truth and justice. This is not the time for opposition between one church and another, between “us” and “them”: those who worship God seek to be men and women of peace, who worship him in Spirit and in truth (cf. Jn 4:23-24).

자매형제 여러분, 오늘 교회의 어머니이신 성모마리아께, 저희가 예수님과 함께, 그리고 예수님처럼 진리와 정의에 목말라하는 사람들을 섬길 수 있게 해주십사고 간청합시다. 지금은 이 교회와 저 교회 간에 대립하고, “우리”와 “그들” 간에 대립할 때가 아닙니다. 하느님을 예배하는 사람들은 평화의 사람들이 되기를, 영과 진리 안에서 그분을 예배하는 사람이 되기를 소망합니다. (요한복음 4,23 - 24 참조)

After the Angelus

Dear brothers and sisters, Deeply disturbing news continues to arrive from Iran and the entire Middle East. In addition to the episodes of violence and devastation as well as the widespread climate of hatred and fear, there is also the concern that the conflict will spread and that other countries in the region, including beloved Lebanon, may again sink back into instability.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 이란과 중동 전역에서 매우 불안한 ​​소식들이 계속해서 전해지고 있습니다. 폭력과 파괴 행위, 그리고 만연한 증오와 공포 분위기 외에도, 이러한 분쟁이 확산되어 사랑하는 레바논을 비롯한 이 지역의 다른 나라들이 다시 불안정의 늪에 빠질까 우려됩니다.

We lift up our humble prayer to the Lord, so that the thunderous sound of bombs may cease, weapons may fall silent, and a space for dialogue may open up in which the voice of the people can be heard. I entrust this intention to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, that she may intercede for those who suffer because of war and lead hearts along the paths of reconciliation and hope.

주님께 겸손히 기도드립니다. 폭탄의 굉음이 멈추고 무기가 침묵하며, 백성의 목소리를 들을 수 있는 대화의 장이 열리기를 빕니다. 평화의 모후이신 복되신 동정 마리아께 이 기도 지향을 의탁합니다. 전쟁으로 고통 받는 이들을 위해 전구하시고, 화해와 희망의 길로 마음을 인도해 주시기를 간청합니다.

Today, 8 March, is International Women’s Day. We renew our commitment, which for us Christians is based on the Gospel, to recognize the equal dignity of man and woman. Unfortunately many women, from childhood onwards, are still discriminated against and suffer various forms of violence. In a special way, I offer to them my solidarity and my prayers.

오늘 3월 8일은 세계 여성의 날입니다. 우리 그리스도인들은 복음에 기초한 남녀의 동등한 존엄성을 인정한다는 우리의 약속을 새롭게 다짐합니다. 안타깝게도 많은 여성들이 어린 시절부터 차별을 받고 다양한 형태의 폭력에 시달리고 있습니다. 저는 특별히 그들에게 저의 연대와 기도를 전합니다.

I welcome the students from College Station in Texas, Kansas City in Missouri, and Fort Wayne in Indiana from the United States of America, and from Jerez and Cádiz in Spain, as well as groups of pilgrims from Peru, Panama, Honduras, Mexico and Chile.
