제 3문......順(순)......정도를 벗어나지 않음......第251事

順(순)은 정도에 벗어나지 않음이다.

 Sun(順,순 - Compliance / Accordance) means not deviating from the proper path(Jeong-do).

가난하되 억지로 취하려 하지 않고 곤경에 빠져있다 해도 
억지로 면탈하려 하지 않음은 하늘의 이치에 순응함이다.

  Although one is poor, not trying to take by force, and even when falling into hardship,

  not trying to escape it by force― this is complying with the principles of Heaven.

은혜에 보답함에 있어 아첨하지 않고 위세앞에 자신의 기개를 굽히지 않아
굴복하지 않는 것은 인간의 이치에 순응하는 것이다.

  In repaying grace, not resorting to flattery, and before power and prestige,

  not bending or submitting one′s spirit ― this is complying with the principles of humanity.

順은 不逆度也라 貧不强取하며 (순은 불역도야라 빈불강취하며)

  Compliance(Sun) means not going against the proper path(Jeong-do) ; being poor,

   one does not take by force,

困不强免은 順天理也요 (곤불강면은 순천리야요)

  And being in distress, one does not force an escape ― this is complying

  with the principles of Heaven(順天理,순천리),

答恩에 不之諛하며 枉威에 不之屈은 (답은에 부지유하며 왕위에 부지굴은)

  Inrepaying grace, not resorting to flattery, and before oppressive power,

  not bending or submitting,

順人理也하느니라.(순인리야하느니라.)

 This is complying with the principles of Heavenity(順人理,순인리).

 [Explanation, 풀이]

남에게 자신의 기개를 굽히고 남에게 아첨하는 것은 
그 상대방에게 이익을 구하기위하여 자신의 참됨을 헐값으로 파는 것이다.

  Bending one′s spirit to others and flattering them is selling one′s true integrity

   for a dirt-sheap price to seek benefit from them.

  
참됨을 헐값으로 팔고 사들인 이익이라면 무엇을 위한 이익일까?

  If it is a gain obtained by selling truthfulness for a dirt-cheap price,

  for what purpose is such a gain truly for?
