안녕하세요, Charlie입니다.

출퇴근길 안전하시죠? 고속도로에서의 크고 작은 사고 현장을 매일 목격하는 것 같아요. 오늘은 사고 현장에 대한 소식을 들었을때 사용할 수 있는 필수 영어 표현들 준비했습니다.

Dialogue

Charlie: Hey Vince, did you hear about the accident down on Main Street? 

찰리: 야, 빈스, 메인 스트리트에서 난 사고에 대해 들었어? 

Vince: Yeah, I caught wind of it earlier. It sounded pretty serious. What exactly happened? 

빈스: 응, 아까 소문으로 들었어. 꽤 심각한 것 같던데. 정확히 무슨 일이 있었어? 

Charlie: From what I gathered, a car came out of nowhere and sideswiped a truck. It was a real close call! 

찰리: 내가 알기로는, 갑자기 차가 나타나서 트럭 옆을 쓱 지나갔어. 정말 아슬아슬했어! 

Vince: Wow, that’s crazy. Were there any injuries? 

빈스: 와, 진짜 미쳤다. 부상자들은 있었어? 

Charlie: Yeah, a few people got banged up, but thankfully, nothing too severe. They were shaken up, but it could’ve been a lot worse. I think the truck driver had a lucky escape. 

찰리: 응, 몇몇 사람들이 좀 다쳤지만 다행히 크게 심각하진 않았어. 다들 놀라긴 했지만 훨씬 더 심각할 수도 있었어. 트럭 운전사는 운 좋게 피한 것 같아. 

Vince: I can imagine! It’s always the same on that road, people drive like maniacs. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. 

빈스: 그럴 것 같아! 그 도로는 항상 똑같아, 사람들이 마치 미친 듯이 운전하잖아. 이런 사고가 나는 건 시간문제였지. 

Charlie: You hit the nail on the head. The way people speed through there, it's an accident waiting to happen. 

찰리: 딱 맞는 말이야. 사람들이 그곳에서 과속하는 방식은 정말 사고가 날 수밖에 없어. 

Vince: Did the cops show up pretty quickly? 

빈스: 경찰이 빨리 도착했어? 

Charlie: Oh yeah, they were on the scene in no time. The whole area was cordoned off. They were working around the clock to clear the wreckage and get things back to normal. 

찰리: 응, 금방 현장에 도착했어. 그 지역 전체를 통제했어. 그들이 밤낮없이 잔해를 치우고 상황을 정상으로 돌리려고 했어. 

Vince: Hopefully, they’ll throw the book at whoever’s responsible. It sounds like reckless driving to me. 

빈스: 아마도 그 책임자에게 엄벌을 내리겠지. 내 생각엔 그건 난폭운전이야. 

Charlie: Yeah, no doubt. It’s a miracle no one got seriously hurt this time. But man, that car is a write-off for sure. 

찰리: 그래, 분명히 그럴 거야. 이번엔 아무도 크게 다치지 않은 게 기적이야. 근데 그 차는 완전히 못 쓰게 됐어. 

Vince: I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes. Getting into an accident like that can turn your life upside down. 

빈스: 나 같으면 그 사람들 입장에 서고 싶지 않아. 그런 사고는 인생을 완전히 뒤집어 놓을 수 있어. 

Charlie: You’re telling me. Anyway, fingers crossed, everyone makes a full recovery. 

찰리: 정말 그래. 어쨌든, 모두가 완전히 회복하길 바랄 뿐이야. 

Vince: Absolutely. Let’s hope they learn from this close shave. 

빈스: 정말이지. 이번 아슬아슬한 상황에서 교훈을 얻길 바라자.

 1. Caught wind of 

To hear or learn about something indirectly.

소문을 듣다, 무언가를 우연히 알게 되다.

     - I caught wind of the promotion before it was officially announced. 

     - She caught wind of their secret plans and decided to join in.

 2. Close call 

A narrow escape from danger or something bad almost happening.

아슬아슬한 상황, 위기 일발.

     - That was a close call! I almost missed my flight. 

     - The car stopped just inches away from the tree. That was a close call!

 3. Banged up 

Injured or damaged, usually in a minor way.

부상을 입다, 다치다.

     - After the bike accident, he was a little banged up but nothing serious. 

     - The car got banged up after hitting the curb.

 4. Shaken up 

Upset or disturbed by a sudden shock or event.

충격을 받은, 놀란.

     - After the robbery, she was pretty shaken up. 

     - He was shaken up after the sudden car accident.

 5. Lucky escape 

A situation where someone avoids danger or harm by chance.

간신히 피한 상황, 운 좋게 빠져나감.

     - He had a lucky escape when the tree branch fell just behind him. 

     - It was a lucky escape when the brakes failed but the car stopped on its own.

 6. Hit the nail on the head 

To describe a situation or problem exactly.

정확히 맞추다, 핵심을 찌르다.

     - You hit the nail on the head when you said the project needs better planning. 

     - His analysis hit the nail on the head—budget cuts are the real issue.

 7. Accident waiting to happen 

A dangerous situation that is likely to result in an accident if not addressed.

사고가 날 가능성이 높은 상황.

     - That broken railing is an accident waiting to happen. 

     - Speeding on icy roads is just an accident waiting to happen.

 8. On the scene 

Present at the location where something happened.

현장에 있는, 출동한.

     - The police were on the scene within minutes of the call. 

     - Firefighters were quickly on the scene after the fire alarm went off.

 9. Throw the book at someone 

To punish someone as severely as possible.

엄격하게 처벌하다.

     - The judge decided to throw the book at him for repeated offenses. 

     - If caught, the reckless driver will have the book thrown at him.

 10. Write-off 

Something, especially a vehicle, that is too damaged to be repaired.

수리가 불가능한 상태, 완전 손상.

     - After the accident, the car was declared a complete write-off. 

     - That phone is a write-off now; it’s shattered beyond repair.

 11. Turn your life upside down 

To cause major changes or disruption in someone’s life.

인생을 완전히 뒤바꾸다.

     - The sudden job loss turned his life upside down. 

     - The accident turned their lives upside down, and they had to start over.

 12. Close shave 

A situation where something bad almost happens but is avoided.

위기 일발, 아슬아슬한 상황.

     - That was a close shave—we nearly missed the train! 

     - It was a close shave, but he managed to avoid hitting the other car.
