바티칸의 의미

바티칸이라는 단어의 뜻이 점집, 점치는 곳이라는 것을 아는 사람들은 그리 많지 않은 것같습니다.

원래 기독교가 들어가기 전부터 로마에서 점치는 곳으로 알려진 것이 바티칸이었던 것으로 보이는데 그 어원은 라틴어의 바티스에서 나왔고 그 어형변화에 따라 다음과 같습니다.

Vates , Vatis : 예언가, 여자 예언가 - 여기서 말하는예언가란, 성경이 말하는 하나님의 예언가 가 아니라, 점장이들이 사주, 관상, 동양 철학, 한다는 사람들이 예언가, 라고 하는 것과 동일합니다. 완전한 예언가로서는 Vaticinator 라는 단어가 있으며 남성명사 입니다.

Vaticinor : Prophesy, -  예언하다, 점치다. 광란의 춤을 추다

Vaticinatio : Prophesying, Prediction - 예언함, 예측함

Vaticanus - 이것은 바티스에 어미 아누스가 붙어서 장소를 의미하는 접미사가 됩니다.

그리하여 바티칸이란 점쟁이네 집, 혹은 무당의 집이라는 뜻을 갖고 있습니다. 그런데 고대의 점쟁이들은 뱀을 이용하여 점을 치는 경우가 많았습니다. 그런 까닭에 오늘날에도 바티칸 교황청에는 이 뱀 문양의 장식이 꽤 많은 것으로 알고 있습니다. 바오로 성당 안에도 뱀 문양이 많은 것으로 압니다. 저는 사실 로마란 곳이 관광할 만한 곳이 아니라고 생각합니다만,

로마를 관광하실 때에는 이런 잡신 풍습을 면밀히 점검해야 할 것입니다.

다음은 바티칸의 어원을 설명하는 사이트에서 가져온 글입니다. 제가 설명한바가 그대로 나와 있습니다.

The suffix -anus indicates adoption, as evinced in Octavianus, adopted by Caesar, and later known as Augustus, the first official Roman Emperor. The Latin word anus generally referred to old women (as avus did old men). The word anulus more often had the posterior connotations.

  now tell me, if paganism has nothing to do with maintaing these names and titles, then isn't the meaning of the words significative?

Anus also means "old hag" so Vaticanus is sort of like a Delphian oracle. If you want to know what the church means in any of its symbols you must look at the whole presentation. Remember that many traditions went into the making of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The ancient Latin people dedicated days and months to their gods and the gods they adopted from other people.  The current western calendar, which is a form of the Roman Catholic Church's Gregorian Calendar still contains the names of pagan gods on it. Why would a Christian, which is what Gregory said to have been, place pagan deities on a "Christian" calendar? Was he attracting pagans with this move, or continuing to show that the Latin Church was a continuation of the ancient religions they claimed to be replacing?

Those seeking to understand the significance of the word "vatican" and/or its connection to Christianity or pre-Christian religion should consider the names associated with the Vatican along with the symbols and practices of the religion whose capital is Vatican City, the City of Seven Hills.

Serious researchers might like to peruse St. Augustine's The City of God, Book IV, Chapters 11 and 21, where the Roman god Vaticanus is mentioned. He is a god who apparently initiates the birthcry in newborn infants. One could make fascinating conjectures as to the Vatican being the symbol of the birth of the church via the infant Jesus. Or something similar along those lines.
