The MinKwon Center celebrates its 25th birthday through its Anniversary Gala at Dae Dong Manor with its mission to further empower and organize the immigrant and marginalized communities. S.J. Jung, the president of MinKwon Center states “For the past 25 years, we have faced many obstacles, but through combined efforts we have made great strides in achieving community empowerment. The MinKwon Center(YKASEC) along with the New York Immigration Coalition(NYIC), Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE), and the NYCPP held a forum on immigration reform at the Macedonia AME church to pressure elected officials to work on passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

YKASEC hosts Workshop to help Applicants with the Citizenship Exam (Korea Times: 9/4/09)

YKASEC hosts a workshop to help community members to take the citizenship test. Kathy Chae, the Social  Service Program Coordinator expressed the new citizenship test has become much more difficult, especially to immigrants that does not have a solid grasp of the English language and stressed the need for citizenship applicants to take more time to prepare for the test.

YKASEC opens Voter Hotline for Korean American Community (Korea Times: 9/5/09)

YKASEC opens its Voter Hotline to the Korean American community to answer questions and aid in the process of voting. The Hotline will be open until Friday November, 6th. The purpose of the hotline is to make sure that voters are comfortable with the electoral process as well as to ensure that their rights are upheld at poll sites. The hotline number is 718-460-5600.

YKASEC hosts Citizenship Day event to help Immigrants Apply for Citizenship (Korea Times: 9/19/09)

YKASEC hosts a Citizenship Day event to help immigrants apply for citizenship free of cost. Over the past 6 years, YKASEC played a crucial role, helping over 9,418 immigrants in filing for citizenship or registering them to vote. In order to apply for citizenship, an applicant must be over 18 years of age, have lived in the United States with a  green card for at least 5 years. The citizenship application fee is currently $675. For any questions on filing for citizenship, please call YKASEC at 718-460-5600 between the hours of 10:30AM – 4:00PM, Monday through Friday.

 YKASEC and Department of Labor hosts workshop with Korean Business (Korea Times: 9/24/09)

YKASEC hosts a workshop in partnership with the Department of Labor to stress the importance of keeping a Payroll Record. Currently within the Korean American community, many business owners are not properly keeping an accurate record of their payroll, resulting in frequent and substantial fines. Payroll record must have the employee’s name, the number of hours they worked, as well as the amount given for their work. Payroll records must also be kept for a minimum of 6 years.

YKASEC urges Governor Paterson to not make Mid-Year Budget Cuts to Public Education (Korea Daily: 9/23/09)

YKASEC takes part in a rally with other community organizations to urge Governor Paterson to prevent mid-year budget cuts on education. Governor Paterson, currently facing a $2 billion budget gap in state revenues, plans to cut over $700 million in the state education budget. Kevin Kang, Youth Coordinator at YKASEC spoke out against the budget cuts and expressed deep concern over the fate of critical programs and services that help many immigrant youth stay and do well in school.

 YKASEC participate in action in front of Senator Schumer’s office for the DREAM Act (The Korea Times: 9/24/09)

The MinKwon Center (YKASEC) participated in a rally to pressure Senator Schumer to act on the DREAM Act. Along with other organizations including the New York State Youth Leadership Council (NYSYLC), a total of 50 young people (10 from YKASEC) rallied in front of Senator Schumer’s office. The MinKwon Center’s Youth Coordinator Kevin Kang stated “Senator Schumer promised that by Labor Day he would introduce an immigration reform bill. He has broken his promise and we are here to urge Senator Schumer to act on a bill that has already been introduced in both the Senate and House”. The DREAM Act has been introduced this past April.

The Korean American community’s leading immigrant and civil rights organization, YKASEC, plans to change its name to the MinKwon Center for Community Action. YKASEC plans to formally announce its new name at its 25th Year Anniversary Gala at Dae Dong Manor. Yu Soung Mun, the Secretary & Treasurer for YKASEC said “The name of the MinKwon envelops all our hopes and dreams for a more just and fair society.” “With our new name, we hope to expand our work in preserving and expanding the rights of the immigrant and marginalized community.”

MinKwon Center starts its Get Out the Vote Campaign (Korea Times 10/28/09)

The MinKwon Center started its Get out the Vote campaign to raise the civic participation of the Korean American community in the upcoming November elections. The MinKwon Center plans to reach out to over 3,000 Korean American voters in both districts 19 and 20 through phone banking. The MinKwon Center also plans to send out Voter Guides to Korean American voters to aid them in the electoral process.

The Future of the Korean American community rests on its Vote (Korea Times: 10/30/09)

The Korean American organizations in New York involved civic participation work got together at the Korea Village Open Center to hold a press conference regarding the November 3rd elections and how important it is for the Korean American community to participate.

MinKwon Center registers over 10,000 New Immigrant Voters this Year (Korea Times 10/31/09)

The MinKwon Center has helped register 11,862 people  to vote as of today. The MinKwon Center has held daily voter registration drives in the Brooklyn Courthouse, where immigrants are in the final step in attaining their citizenship. The MinKwon Center started its voter registration campaign since 2004 and since has registered 38,857 new immigrant voters. The MinKwon Center hopes to reach the goal of registering 40,000 people by the end of the year.

Tomorrow is Election Day. Since the recent primary election, the Korean American community has been extremely fervent in its pursuit of political empowerment. But the quest for political empowerment has to be carefully sought, with goals and strategies. In this current election, the Korean American community’s strategy in their quest for political empowerment has been to support a Korean American in to political office, namely the City Council. But just having a Korean American in to the City Council does not equal to political empowerment. The true goal of political empowerment is the expansion of the community’s civic empowerment.

MinKwon Center Releases Findings of its Exit Poll Survey (Korea Times: 11/5/09)

MinKwon Center exit polling shows that 93% of Korean Americans voted for Kevin Kim in the District 19 City Council race. The MinKwon Center for Community Action (formerly YKASEC) sampled 100 Korean American voters in District 19 and District 20. Exit poll data shows that most Korean American voters voted without consideration of party affiliation. In District 20, over 30% of Korean American voters voted for Peter Koo, a Republican candidate, which is four times more than the percentage of registered Republican Korean Americans.

청년학교(사무총장 스티븐 최)는 3일 청년학교 사무실에서 ‘시민권 시험 웍샵’을 열고 한인들의 보다 적극적인 시민권 신청을 당부했다. 청년학교 채지현 변호사는 “시민권 시험 영어평가가 까다로워졌다”며 “시민권 인터뷰 본 시험에 앞서 이민국 시험관과 나누는 인사부터 영어평가가 시작되는 만큼 기본적인 회화 준비는 필수”라고 강조했다. 이날 웍샵에 참가한 한인들이 채지현(가운데) 변호사가 강조하는 주의사항을 경청하고 있다.

'교육예산 삭감 안된다'…청년학교 등 시청서 반대 캠페인 (중앙일보 9월 23일)

데이빗 패터슨 뉴욕주지사의 대규모 교육예산 삭감에 반대하는 캠페인이 이민자 커뮤니티로 확산되고 있다. 패터슨 주지사는 최근 21억달러 예산 부족을 이유로 교육 예산 7억달러를 삭감할 것이라고 밝혔다. 23일 뉴욕시청에서 열린 교육예산 삭감 반대 캠페인에는 청년학교를 비롯해 뉴욕시 교사노조(UFT), 교육형평예산책정캠페인(CFE) 관계자 등 50여명이 참가했다.
청년학교 케빈 강 코디네이터는 “교육예산이 삭감되면 이민자 자녀들에게 타격이 크다”며 “이민자 자녀를 위한 프로그램 축소를 막아야 한다”고 밝혔다.

임금지급 기록 꼭 보관해야”  청년학교 ‘노동법 웍샵’ (한국일보 9월 24일)

“노동국과의 불필요한 문제를 예방하기 위해서는 정확한 임금지급 기록(Payroll Record)을 보관하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다." 23일 청년학교 사무실에서 열린 한인 영세 자영업자 대상 노동법 웍샵에서 강사로 나선 뉴욕주 노동국 김행보 근로 기준국 조사관은 임금지급 기록 보관의 필요성을 강조했다. 이는 대부분의 한인 업주들이 정확한 임금지급 기록을 보관하지 않아 노동국 조사를 당할 시 벌금을 부과 받는 경우가 빈번히 발생하기 때문이다..

“드림법안 조속히 처리하라” 청년학교. 이민자 권익옹호 단체 관계자 시위  (한국일보 9월 24일)

청년학교 등 ‘드림법안’ 입법화를 촉구해온 이민자 권익 옹호 단체 관계자 50 여명은 23일 맨하탄 소재 찰스 슈머 연방상원의원 사무실 앞에서 지난 3월 연방 상하 양원에 재상정된 ‘드림법안(DREAM Act)’의 조속한 처리를 촉구하는 시위를 벌였다. 이날 청년학교(사무국장 스티븐 최) 청소년프로젝트의 케빈 강 코디네이터는 한인 학생들과 뉴욕주청소년위원회(NYSYLC) 소속 학생들이 참석한 시위에서 “드림법안 처리의 열쇠를 쥐고 있는 찰스 슈머 의원이 지난 6월 노동절까지 드림법안을 처리하기로 한 약속을 지키지 않고 있다”고 지적한 후 “드림법안은 인도주의적인 법안으로 현재 지연되고 있는 이민법 논의와 연계시켜서는 안 된다”고 강조했다.

한인사회 대표적인 이민자 권익옹호기관인 ‘청년학교(YKASEC)’가 ‘민권센터(Min Kwon Center for Community Action)’라는 이름으로 새롭게 거듭난다. 청년학교(사무국장 스티븐 최)는 지난해부터 단체 이름 및 이미지 수정작업을 추진한 결과 이달 15일 오후 6시30분 대동연회장에서 열리는 창립 25주년 기념 연례만찬을 기해 명칭을 ‘민권센터’로 공식 변경키로 했다고 8일 발표했다. 문유성 상임이사는 “새 단체명인 민권센터는 향후 활동 목표와 지역사회 발전 전망을 담은 것이다. 앞으로 민권센터라는 명칭처럼 지역사회 모든 이민자와 저소득층 등 사회 소외계층의 권리보장과 정의실현을 위한 다양한 활동을 펼쳐나갈 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

'이민자·저소득층 지원에 앞장선다'…민권센터 설립 25주년 기념만찬 성황 (중앙일보 10월 16일)

민권센터가 설립 25주년 기념 만찬을 갖고 이민자와 저소득층 지원을 위해 앞장설 것을 다짐했다. 정승진 민권센터 회장은 “지난 기간이 쉬운 여정은 아니였지만 모두의 힘과 노력으로 큰 강을 이루게 됐다”며 “앞으로는 큰 바다가 되기 위해 올바르고 더불어 사는 사회를 함께 만들자”고 강조했다. 민권센터는

지난 25년간 민권센터를 위해 봉사한 명예이사장 김수곤 박사에게 평생공로상을 수여했다.
김 박사는 "어떤 상황하에서도 바른 일을 한다면 앞으로의 25년도 커뮤티니를 위해 올바른 봉사를 할 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.

민권센터, 투표참여 캠페인 본격 (한국일보 10월 28일)

 

민권센터(구 청년학교·사무국장 스티븐 최)가 11월3일 본 선거를 앞두고 한인 유권자들의 투표 참여를 높이는 활동을 27일부터 본격 시작했다. 센터는 이날부터 선거 당일까지 한인 밀집지역인 제19지구와 제20지구의 한인 유권자 3,000명에게 투표 참여를 촉구하는 전화걸기에서부터 뉴욕시 선관위로부터 한국어 투표 안내서를 받지 못한 퀸즈 이외 뉴욕시 거주 한인들에게 민권센터가 자체 제작한 투표 안내서도 발송한다.

올 신규 유권자 1만명 넘어  민권센터 “연말까지 총 4만명 돌파” (한국일보 10월 31일)

민권센터(구 청년학교·사무국장 스티븐 최)가 올 한 해 신규 유권자 등록 1만 명을 돌파했다. 센터는 시민권 선서식이 열리는 브루클린 법원 앞에서 매주 유권자 등록 활동을 벌여왔으며 30일 현재 총 1만1,862명의 신규 유권자 등록업무를 도운 것으로 집계됐다. 2004년 대선 직후부터 본격적인 유권자 등록운동을 펼쳐온 센터는 “이로써 현재까지 총 3만8,857명의 유권자를 등록시키는 성과를 올렸다”며 “올해 연말까지 총 4만 명 돌파가 목표”라고 밝혔다.

[테마 진단] 선거의 주인은 유권자 차주범/민권센터 교육부장  (중앙일보 11월 2일)

오는 11월 3일 화요일은 2009년 시 선거의 날이다. 지난 예비선거부터 한인 커뮤니티는 그 어느 때보다 커뮤니티 정치력 신장의 열망이 뜨거웠다. 그런데 커뮤니티 정치력 신장은 수단과 목적을 잘 구분해야 한다. 이번 시 선거에서 한인 커뮤니티는 한인 시의원 배출 가능성 여부에 온 신경을 집중시켜 왔다. 한인 시의원 배출은 정치력 신장의 수단에 불과하다. 진정한 목적은 커뮤니티 권익 신장이다.

민권센터 출구조사 발표, 투표율 60~70대가 가장 많아 (한국일보 11월 5일)

3일 실시된 뉴욕시의원 선거에 참여한 제19지구 한인 유권자의 93%가 케빈 김 후보에게 투표한 것으로 조사됐다. 민권센터(구 청년학교)가 선거당일 제19지구 한인 투표자 100명과 제20지구 한인 투표자 100명 등 총 200명의 한인 유권자를 표본삼아 실시한 출구조사 결과, 한인들은 소속 정당에 상관없이 후보를 선택하는 경향을 보였다. 특히 제19지구는 한인 유권자의 93%가 민주당의 김 후보를 선택했고, 플러싱을 포함한 제20지구에서도 공화당의 피터 구 후보가 전체 공화당 소속 한인 유권자보다 무려 4배 이상 많은 30%의 지지율을 얻은 것으로 나타났다.
