<모음곡 212>는 원래 1970년대 초반 미국의 13번 채널/W-NET 심야 시간에 방송되던 5분 정도 길이의 비디오 시리즈 30개로 구성되어 있다. 백남준과 저드 얄커트, 더글러스 데이비스, 그리고 아나운서 러셀 코너 등이 협력하여 만든 이 시리즈는 백남준의 다양한 관점이 담긴 ‘뉴욕에 대한 개인적 스케치’라 할 수 있다. 예를 들어 시리즈 중 하나인 ‘뉴욕 판매’에서는 아나운서가 전달하는 뉴욕 시에 대한 통계 정보와 이에 대한 뉴욕 시민들의 다양한 반응들이 병치된다. 백남준은 여기에서, 텔레비전 방송처럼 거대한 정보 산업에 의해 지배되고 변화하는 뉴욕의 미디어 풍경을 비판적이면서도 유쾌하게 그려내고 있다. <모음곡 212>에는 이 밖에도 뉴욕 메트로의 붐비는 풍경, 재건축이 진행되고 있는 현장, 차이나타운의 거리 모습, 도시의 반짝이는 밤 풍경, 시민들과의 인터뷰 등이 다양하게 담겨있다. 백남준 특유의 빠르고 현란한 비디오 콜라주와 캔디컬러를 사용한 전자채색(colorisation) 기법으로 뉴욕의 미디어스케이프를 포착해내고 있다.

백남준아트센터의 <미디어스케이프, 백남준의 걸음으로>전에서는 <모음곡 212>의 전 비디오들을 상영하고 있다. 벽면 프로젝션과 여러 가지 다른 모델의 구형 텔레비전을 통해 각 비디오가 함께 전시되며, 시리즈 중 한 작품인 ‘패션 애브뉴’는 백남준아트센터를 벗어나 서울역 광장 앞 서울스퀘어 미디어캔버스에서 상영된다. ‘패션 애브뉴’는 뉴욕의 거리패션 풍경과 차이나타운 상인들의 모습, 패션 모델과 화장품 광고에 이르기까지 패션에 대한 다채로운 풍경을 콜라주한 작품이다. 대중 매체나 상업 광고들이 바꾸고 있는 뉴욕의 풍경을 스케치한 백남준의 비디오가 2011년 현재 서울이라는 도시의 미디어스케이프를 다시 한번 변화시키고 있다.

Nam June Paik’s <Suite 212> consists of thirty videos, about five minutes long each, which were originally broadcast after late-night TV programs of Channel 13/W-Net in the early 1970s. In collaboration with Jud Yalkut, Douglas Davis and Russell Connor, Nam June Paik produced this series as a “personal New York sketchbook” presenting the mediascape of New York from multiple angles. One of the series, ‘The Selling of New York’, for example, juxtaposes statistical information about the city enumerated by a TV announcer and diverse responses of New Yorkers to it. Paik reveals the city life changed and dominated by the mammoth media and information industries. There are other brilliant videos in the <Suite 212> series, showing crowded subway stations, Chinatown streets, glittering night views, building reconstruction sites, and interviews with pedestrians. Paik’s unique electronic collage using colorisation captures the cityscape in a flashy and rather dizzy way. The exhibition <Mediascape, a pas de Nam June Paik> in the NJP Art Center is showing the whole series of <Suite 212> in a wall projection and a variety of old television sets. In addition, one of the series was selected to go outside the NJP Art Center, specifically for the screening on the media facade of Seoul Square Building. It is ‘Fashion Avenue’, a dazzling collage of New York’s street fashion, Chinatown peddlers, fashion models, cosmetics commercials, and so forth. Through the grand screen of the Seoul Square Media Canvas, Paik’s electronic sketch of New York is changing yet again the mediascape of Seoul in 2011.
