When I tell people that I am from Bolivia, they almost always ask me, “Bulgaria?” This was the question that I used to get 10 years ago when I had just moved to Korea, and this is still the same question I get – even after 10 years.
This is sad, not only because it would be nice for Koreans to at least know the name of the country where I grew up during 10 years, but also because this lack of any kind of knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries is a serious business problem - the US, our No. 1 trading partner today will be very Latino Americanized within a few years. It is estimated that at least 40% of the Americans will be of the Latino descendent by the year 2020.
Yet, we know nothing of the Latino culture, needless to mention the Latino business culture. We are completely naked. Closest we ever come into contact with the Latino culture is perhaps the Chilean grapes and wines we purchase at supermarkets.
Likewise, my goal is to start a management consulting company that will help small and medium sized Korean companies to move into and sustain business in the Latino Americanized US. This goal did not come just because I grew up in South America - although this background of mine did play a part - but because I want to spend the rest of my life in an area (consulting) that I feel that I am most talented in, that I feel I can make the most difference in, and that my mother country, Korea may need the most in the very near future.
And I want to help small companies because all throughout my career as a BCG consultant, I worked with big companies, and they are doing relatively fine: They could do better, but they are not as desperate as the smaller guys. I know because I am running a small company myself today: A company with great methodologies and great contents, and yet that struggles every day to survive, which in turn keeps pushing back the plan for pushing forward innovative ideas boldly.
That is, I know what it feels like to have a product that could help so many people - if given a chance.
I know how the small companies feel. I feel for them. I want to help. And I will - with your help.
