Revelation 2:12~17 - Background and Meaning of Christian Historical Perspective (AD 313~538, The age of compromise between politics and religion)
○ The historical background of Christianity was between AD 313 and 538, which was the word of revelation of Jesus that the age of compromise between politics and religion, that is, the age of negotiation would come. As I already mentioned in detail in <Bible Matrix ⑦_20> and <Bible Matrix ⑦_162>, the Roman emperor Constantine I the Great (Western AD 306~, Overall reign 324~337) converted to Christianity in AD 312, and promulgated the Edict of Milan in 313, which legally authorized religious freedom for the first time, and after that, Theodosius I (reigned AD 347~395) declared Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire in AD 392.
○ The compromise between politics and religion: Following Constantine I the Great, many pagans (paganism) suddenly converted to Christianity, and Christianity began to seek recognition and popularity from many people as it became the state religion of the Roman Empire. With Roman Catholic at the forefront, the churches began to compromise the truth to meet the demands of the newly converted pagans and the Roman Empire. The churches modified the rituals and institutions of the pagan religions little by little and brought them into the Christian churches.
○ In this way, the newly converted pagans felt as if the rites inherited from their ancestors were still there, and as a result, many pagans could more easily accept Christianity. Temples were lined up here and there, each adorned with various paintings and carved idols, so that both outwardly and inwardly they resembled the original temples of the pagans. In a word, with fusion, a mixture of Christianity and paganism, the churches naturally worshiped pagan temples and idols.
○ After the division of the Roman Empire into the Western Roman Empire (AD 395~476) and the Eastern Roman Empire (AD 395~1453) in AD 395, this political and religious compromise lasted until 538, when Emperor Justinian (reign, AD 527~565) of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium Empire) officially recognized Roman Catholic as the Church of the whole world.
○ Furthermore, "the practices or deeds of the Nicolaitans" that had appeared in the church in Ephesus developed into "the teaching or doctrine of the Nicolaitans", so the church in Pergamum fell into the doctrine of the Nicolaitans
○ As a result, the church in Pergamum lost the purity of faith, martyrdom, and love that they had firmly maintained even during the age of persecution. Accordingly, the citadel of faith collapsed. In order to save the church in Pergamum from crisis, that is, from evil, Jesus sends the message as the words of Jesus who has the sharp, double-edged sword, that is, the weapon of punishment.
