Today a samll party was held at the bakery near my apartment.
The host and hostess were busy preparing food for the quests.
About 10 people were invited to the party to enjoy American football.
I went to the store earlier to ask if there would be something for me to help. They said 'No.' Instead, the hostess brought some toy from her car and played the dice game with my kid. She usually asks my kid some easy questions; How was you school today? How are you? Did you do your homework?
A month has passed since we arrived here, but my kid never opens his mouth whey native speakers speak to him. He just nods, shakes, smiles, or makes face.
Today she asked about his school life. Recently he seems to understand what she asks, but never speaks the answer out. She usually explains what facial expression my kid makes to her blind husband. He happily listens to it and smiles again. I ask my kid to shake hands with the man. My kid knows very well why he shakes hands with him. I want him to feel the small fingers.
Today the woman asked the same questions and my kid kept silent as usual in her arms. Listening to their conversation, the man walked toward my kid and took off his glasses, which he has never taken off since we came here. And to my surprise, he took one of his fake eyes out from his eye and showed it to my kid. I was so surprised to see his sudden and unexpected behavior.
I was worried that my kid would feel afraid of his behavior, in fact.
How foolish and selfish woman I was! Just worry about her own kid. I felt ashamed when he explained why my kid has to say 'hello' to him. He showed his fake eye on his big palm and said, 'It is the reason why you have to say 'Hello' to me, baby. I don't see your cute face, baby. If you say 'Hello,' I know you are here.' How hard and brave behavior it is to show others his handcap!!
When we came back home after the party, I hold my kid in my arms and asked, 'Were you afraid when the man showed you the fake eye?.' He said, 'No.' I said, 'you must not forget his brave behavior today. Never forget.' My kid is learning that hadicap is not what we have to be ashamed of or hide, but just something uncomfortable like the trouble on our face or hand.
How lucky we are to have such nice neighbors!! I really appreciate thier consideration and kindness and hope my kids never forget them and give the same kindness to others.
The resaon why I used the word 'kid' is that they chose the word whey they call my son. The word 'kid' contains a deeper meaning than daughter and son. It cantains their love.
첫댓글 right! The handicap is just one trouble like one permenant scar on our face, not anymore.
Your composition was very impressive beyond descriptions! His brave behavior made me feel like an old crony of his anyway thanks for your writing^^*
It would be much better if you used "my daughter or son" in place of "my kid." My kid sounds awkward.

When I was staying in England, an old lady who lived next to my house called my daughters "sweet heart". How about in the States?
