Summary:
Because it was the day of Preparation and the next day was a special Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs of those crucified broken and the bodies removed. The soldiers broke the legs of the two others crucified with Jesus, but when they saw Jesus was already dead, they did not break His legs. Instead, one soldier pierced His side with a spear, and blood and water came out. This eyewitness account affirms the truth of the events so others may believe. These events fulfilled Scripture: “Not a bone of Him shall be broken,” and “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
Teaching:
John is the one who saw all these things and recorded them. He is not reporting hearsay but is testifying to what he witnessed firsthand. Therefore, it is a true testimony—a word of truth.
The reason for leaving this record is so that people may believe. Those who read and hear these words are meant to believe, because this was written for that very purpose.
So, those chosen by God - those who are to be saved - will come to believe as they read and hear these words. This is the purpose of the Gospel of John.
By reading this word, people may believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Christ, and by living in His name, they may have life.
Those who believe in the blood and water Jesus poured out in His death are now to live by the new life Jesus gives.
