Foxglove is a biennial plant cultivated as an ornamental in the U.S. but also found wild in pastures and burned-over areas on the Pacific coast from British Columia to northern California. The stem is stout, succulent, simple and downy, growing to a height of 2 to 5 feet. The leaves are alternate, oblong-lanceolate, crenate, and downy, the lower petioled, the upper sessile. From June to September one-sided racemes of bell-shaped flowers appear, which are rose-colored to purple on the outside and whitish with red spots on the inside.

Cardiac. Foxglove contains glycosides which are extracted from the second year's growth of leaves to make the heart drug digitalis. Even touching the plant with bare skin has been known to cause rashes, headache, and nausea.
