미국 미디어 호스팅 업체 사이트 '이미지쉐이크(http://imageshack.us)'에 '한글 주기율표'라는 그림이 올라와 국내외 누리꾼들의 관심을 끌고 있다. 

'한글 주기율표'는 한글을 자음과 모음으로 분류해 놓고 표기법, 소리, 조합 등을 한 눈에 볼 수 있도록 표로 정리한 것이다. 한글 창제의 과학성을 그대로 드러내고 있다. 

이 표는 한글의 음절 구성 논리를 포함해 한글 초보자들에게 학습방법을 제공하고, 로마 표기 문자를 실제 발음을 반영한 한글 문자로 변환하는 데 도움을 준다.

제작자의 홈페이지(http://www.aboutletters.com)에는 "이 표는 당신이 한글을 배우려는 개인적인 목적을 위해 사용하는 한에서 무료"라고 밝히고 있다. 

제작자는 김다림(Darim Kim)이라는 한국 여성. '김 디자인 포트폴리오' 홈페이지 (Blumaru.com)에 의하면, 그는 미국에서 1998년 그래픽 및 웹디자인 학사 학위를 받았으며 도요타 금융 서비스, 아베크롬비 등에서 프로젝트를 설계한 이력이 있다.

그는 '한글 주기율표' 소개 홈페이지에서 "'한글 주기율표'는 상업용으로 사용이 불가하며, 프린트하거나 문서에 인용할 수 없고, 변형, 조작, 복사 등 재생산을 허용하지 않는다"고 말했다. 

또 "얼마 전 제 디자인과 게시물을 저작권 부분을 지운 채로 자신의 블로그에 게재한 한국인 블로거가 있어서 불쾌했다"며 "반드시 출처와 디자이너, 저작권을 함께 기재해달라"고 말했다. 

누리꾼들은 "외국인뿐만 아니라 한국인들이 한글 공부하는 데도 도움되겠다", "주기율표의 배경도 한지 디자인이라 고풍적이다", "외국 사이트에 한글이 소개되다니 감격스럽다" 등의 반응을 보였다. 

한편 '한글 주기율표'는 자체 선정된 미국 비영리 단체에 보급될 예정이며 개별 구매도 가능하다.

The Periodic Table of Hangul was updated.
I corrected a couple of mistakes that I did not notice before and enhanced descriptions, as well as fixed confusing explanations. I must thank the Typophile members Kevin Pease(cerulean),  André G. Isaak(agisaak), and John Savard(quadibloc), who kindly spent their time to review my work.

Although I reviewed the wallpaper several times to deliver correct information as much as I could, there still may be mistakes.
If anybody finds additional typos, errors, or has suggestions, please feel free to let me know. I would appreciate your help.

You are free to use this wallpaper for your personal purpose to learn Hangul.
However, it is not permitted to use this material for any commercial purpose, including tutoring at private institutes.

Update (Dec. 10th, 2010): Corrected IPA symbols in the descriptions of the twin clusters and ㅈ.
I found a very useful website where you can hear the actual pronunciations of Hangul consonants and vowels.

I noticed that there are a couple of errors in the listening quiz section. So please feel free to leave a comment on this post if you have questions.

Note: I noticed many people are interested in converting their names into Hangul even before they get familiar with reading and writing in Hangul.
The “Periodic Table of Hangul” focuses on “How to read and write Hangul” not “How to convert English into Hangul”.
The conversion from Roman alphabet into Hangul should be organized as a separate chart because the conversion is not about spelling, but about pronunciation.

Thanks to Jongseong Park, this conversion process is easy.
Please visit his website Hangulize.org to convert many different languages into Hangul.
Remember, it is NOT a translation tool, but a transliteration tool. It converts the sounds of non-Korean letters into Hangul, not the meanings.

Just a side note, only to whom it may concern.
A week ago I found a Korean blog that copied this wallpaper and the entire related post to his/her blog. It was worse than feed hijacking or image hot-linking because he/she did not leave a single trace of the original author of the post, let alone leave the track back.  He/she even edited part of the text to get rid of the disclaimer, copyright notice, and my website address. It was a very unpleasant experience, though I busted him/her the next day.

I am giving out my designs (or fonts) for free that I spent sleepless nights creating for months. Yes, months.
All I wanted was credit. Is that really too much to ask?
I really do not know why certain people are so disrespectful.

예전에 저의 외국인친구도 "Zach"이라는 이름을 어떻게 한글로 쓰느냐 고 물어봐서 "잭"이라고 쓰는거라
