Even the rag froze solid, and the small potted herb I bought on the street last spring withered to death in the cold. The draft was so harsh that I slept curled up like a shrimp, as if reviewing difficult homework when I lived by the seaside as a child.

A spring rain walked into the mist, softly blurring the marks on the scale of hesitation—a scale where I had weighed my thoughts against my thin wallet all winter long, unable to decide whether to buy a thermo-hygrometer.
