Dishcloth
Jung Ha-sun
The rice my wife cooked before going out.
The kitchen has an empty table; though no one is around,
Mealtime returns, and I eat alone.
Without feeling much, simply because it became time to eat.
My family does not come, yet mealtime returns.
Unwilling to set the table, hesitating for a while,
I eat, just because I am a little hungry.
My appetite, too, has gone out; I eat all alone.
No one comes, yet mealtime returns.
I eat merely to stay alive, thinking "this, too, is a life."
Blending with the half-cooked grains of sand piercing my tongue,
And the unrecognizable lump rising in my throat.
Empty bowls with tangled rice grains lie scattered in the sink,
And a dishcloth hangs upside down.
Never in its life able to go on an outing, hanging by its neck over the sink,
I see the dishcloth that must have wiped my rice bowls all its life.

La Chiffonnette
Jung Ha-sun

💡 Commentary & Interpretation
This poem begins with a solitary moment in daily life—eating a meal alone. In a kitchen left vacant by his wife and absent family, the poet forces himself to eat. Lacking appetite, he swallows rice that feels like "half-cooked grains of sand," enduring the emptiness and melancholy of life.
The poem's shift and deepening occur in the fourth stanza. As he gazes at the empty bowls scattered in the sink, his eyes rest upon the "dishcloth hanging upside down." The dishcloth—which has never once gone on an outing, quietly wiping someone else's meal bowls by the sink all its life—overlaps with the life of a wife who devoted herself selflessly to her family (or perhaps the poet’s own weary life). It is a moving piece where the depth of observing a simple object expands into profound self-awareness and compassion for life.
💬 Literary Criticism
Deep Pathos in Everyday Diction: Utilizing extremely ordinary, everyday subjects such as "rice," "mealtime," "sink," and "dishcloth," the poet sensitively captures the heavy sorrow and solitude of existence.
Expansion and Contrast of Perspective: The poetic space broadens as the point of view shifts from the self-contained loneliness of "eating alone" to an external object: the "dishcloth."
Striking Metaphor: The phrase "the dishcloth that must have wiped my rice bowls all its life, hanging by its neck over the sink" serves as a brilliant personification, breathing life and narrative into a humble object. It stands as a painfully beautiful homage to quiet dedication.
