PALM SUNDAY: PASSION OF THE LORD – COMMEMORATION OF THE LORD’S ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM AND HOLY MASS, PAPAL MASS, HOMILY OF POPE LEO XIV, St Peter's Square, Sunday, 29 March 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, As Jesus walks the Way of the Cross, we place ourselves behind him, following in his footsteps. As we walk with him, we contemplate his passion for the sake of humanity, his broken heart, and his life as a gift of love.

주님 수난 성지주일 – 주님의 예루살렘 입성 기념과 미사, 교황 미사, 레오 14세 교황 강론, 성 베드로 광장, 2026년 3월 29일 일요일

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 예수님께서 십자가의 길을 걸으시는 동안, 우리는 그분의 뒤에 서서 그분의 발자취를 따라갑니다. 그분과 함께 걸으며, 우리는 인류를 위한 그분의 수난, 그분의 상처 입은 마음, 그리고 사랑의 선물로서의 그분의 삶을 묵상합니다.

We turn our gaze to Jesus, who reveals himself as King of Peace, even as war looms around him. He remains steadfast in meekness, while others are stirring up violence. He offers himself to embrace humanity, even as others raise swords and clubs. He is the light of the world, though darkness is about to engulf the earth. He came to bring life, even as plans unfold to condemn him to death.

우리는 전쟁의 기운이 감도는 가운데서도 평화의 왕으로 자신을 드러내시는 예수님께 시선을 돌립니다. 다른 이들이 폭력을 일으키고 있는 동안에 그분께서는 흔들림 없이 온유함을 유지하십니다. 다른 사람들이 칼과 몽둥이를 휘두르는 가운데에서도 예수님께서는 자신을 바쳐 인류를 품어 안으십니다. 어둠이 온 세상을 뒤덮으려 하지만 그분께서는 세상의 빛이십니다. 그분을 사형에 처하려는 계획이 진행되는 가운데에서도 예수님께서는 생명을 가져오셨습니다.

King of Peace. Jesus’ desire is to bring the world into the Father’s arms, tearing down every barrier that separates us from God and from our neighbor, for “He is our peace” (Eph 2:14).

평화의 왕. 예수님께서 원하시는 것은 세상을 하느님 품 안으로 가져오시는 것이며, 우리와 하느님, 그리고 우리와 이웃을 갈라놓는 모든 장벽을 무너뜨리시는 것입니다. “그리스도는 우리의 평화” (에페소서 2,14) 이시기  때문입니다.

King of Peace. Jesus enters into Jerusalem not upon a horse, but upon a donkey, fulfilling the ancient prophecy that calls for rejoicing at the arrival of the Messiah: “Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations” (Zech 9:9–10).

평화의 왕. 예수님께서 말이 아닌 나귀를 타고 예루살렘에 입성하시는데, 이는 메시아의 오심을 기뻐하라고 하는 고대의 예언을 실현하신 것입니다. “보라, 너의 임금님이 너에게 오신다. 그분은 의로우시며 승리하시는 분이시다. 그분은 겸손하시어 나귀를, 어린 나귀를 타고 오신다. 그분은 에프라임에서 병거를, 예루살렘에서 군마를 없애시고 전쟁에서 쓰는 활을 꺾으시어 민족들에게 평화를 선포하시리라.” (즈가르야 9,9-10)

King of Peace. When one of his disciples drew his sword to defend him and struck the high priest’s servant, Jesus immediately stopped him, saying: “Put your sword back into its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Mt 26:52).

평화의 왕. 제자 중 한 사람이 예수님을 방어하려고 칼을 뽑아 대사제의 종을 치자, 예수님께서 즉시 그를 막으시며 말씀하셨습니다. “칼을 칼집에 도로 꽂아라. 칼을 잡는 자는 모두 칼로 망한다.” (마태오 복음 26,52)

King of Peace. While he was burdened with our sufferings and pierced for our sins, Jesus “did not open his mouth, like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent” (Is 53:7). He did not arm himself, or defend himself, or fight any war. He revealed the gentle face of God, who always rejects violence. Rather than saving himself, he allowed himself to be nailed to the cross, embracing every cross borne in every time and place throughout human history.

평화의 왕. 예수님께서 우리의 고통을 짊어지시고, 우리의 죄를 위해 못 박히셨지만, 예수님께서는 “도살장에 끌려가는 어린 양처럼 털 깎는 사람 앞에 잠자코 서 있는 어미 양처럼 당신의 입을 열지 않으셨습니다.” (이사야 53,7) 그분께서는 무장하지도, 자신을 방어하지도, 싸움을 벌이지도 않으셨습니다. 예수님께서는 언제나 폭력을 거부하시는 하느님의 온유한 얼굴을 드러내셨습니다. 예수님께서 자신을 구원하시기 보다는, 인류역사를 통틀어 모든 시대와 장소에서 짊어진 모든 십자가를 껴안으시며, 자신을 내어주시어 십자가에 못 박히시도록 하셨습니다.

Brothers and sisters, this is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war. He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them, saying: “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood” (Is 1:15).

형제자매 여러분, 이분이 바로 우리의 하느님이십니다. 평화의 왕이신 예수님, 전쟁을 거부하시는 분, 아무도 그분을 전쟁의 명분으로 삼을 수 없는 분이십니다. 그분께서는 전쟁을 일으키는 자들의 기도를 듣지 않으시고, 그들을 거부하시고, 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “너희가 기도를 아무리 많이 한다 할지라도 나는 들어 주지 않으리라. 너희의 손은 피로 가득하다.” (이사야 1,15)

As we set our gaze upon him who was crucified for us, we can see a crucified humanity. In his wounds, we see the hurts of so many women and men today. In his last cry to the Father, we hear the weeping of those who are crushed, who have no hope, who are sick and who are alone. Above all, we hear the painful groans of all those who are oppressed by violence and are victims of war.

우리를 위해 십자가에 못 박히신 그분을 바라보며, 우리는 십자가에 못 박힌 인류를 봅니다. 그분의 상처에서 우리는 오늘날 수많은 사람들의 상처를 봅니다. 아버지께 드린 그분의 마지막 절규에서 우리는 으깨지고, 희망을 잃고, 병들고, 외로운 이들의 울부짖음을 듣습니다. 무엇보다도 우리는 폭력에 의해 억압받고, 전쟁의 희생양이 된 모든 사람들의 고통스러운 신음소리를 듣습니다.

Christ, King of Peace, cries out again from his cross: God is love! Have mercy! Lay down your weapons! Remember that you are brothers and sisters!

평화의 왕이신 그리스도께서 그분의 십자가에서 다시 외치십니다. "하느님은 사랑이시다! 자비를 베풀어라! 무기를 내려놓아라! 너희가 형제자매라는 것을 기억 하여라!

In the words of the Servant of God, Bishop Tonino Bello, I would like to entrust this cry to Mary Most Holy, who stands beneath the cross of her Son and weeps also at the feet of those who are crucified today: “Holy Mary, woman of the third day, grant us the certainty that, in spite of all, death will no longer hold sway over us; that the injustices of peoples are numbered; that the flashes of war are fading into the twilight; that the sufferings of the poor are breathing their last. And grant, finally, that the tears of all the victims of violence and pain will soon be dried up like frost beneath the spring sun” (Maria, donna dei nostri giorni).

하느님의 종인 토니노 벨로 주교님의 말씀을 빌려, 저는 아드님의 십자가 아래에 서 계시고, 또한 오늘 십자가에 처형된 사람들의 발치에서 울고 계신 지극히 거룩하신 성모 마리아께 이 절규를 의탁합니다. “사흗날의 여인이신, 거룩하신 성모 마리아여, 저희에게 확신을 주소서! 모든 역경에도 불구하고 죽음이 더 이상 우리를 지배하지 못할 것이고, 민족들의 불의는 끝이 났고, 전쟁의 섬광은 황혼 속으로 사라져 가고 있으며, 가난한 이들의 고통은 이제 끝을 향해 가고 있다는 확신을 주소서! 그리고 마침내 폭력과 고통의 모든 희생자들의 눈물이 봄 햇살 아래의 서리처럼 곧 마르게 하여 주소서!” (마리아, 우리 시대의 여인)

Dear brothers and sisters, At the beginning of Holy Week, our prayers are more than ever with the Christians of the Middle East, who are suffering the consequences of a brutal conflict and, in many cases, are unable to observe fully the liturgies of these holy days. Just as the Church contemplates the mystery of the Lord’s Passion, we cannot forget those who today are truly sharing in his suffering. Their ordeal challenges all our consciences. Let us raise our prayer to the Prince of Peace that he may sustain the peoples wounded by war and open concrete paths to reconciliation and peace.

삼종기도 전

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 성주간이 시작되는 오늘, 우리는 그 어느 때보다도 중동의 그리스도인들을 위해 기도합니다. 그들은 잔혹한 분쟁의 결과로 고통 받고 있으며, 많은 경우 이 성주간의 전례를 온전히 지킬 수 없습니다. 교회가 주님 수난의 신비를 묵상하듯이, 우리는 오늘날 그분의 고난에 진정으로 동참하고 있는 사람들을 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 그들이 겪는 시련은 우리 모두의 양심의 가책을 느끼게 합니다. 평화의 왕자이신 예수님께 전쟁으로 상처받은 그들을 붙들어 주시고, 화해와 평화로 가는 구체적인 길을 열어주시도록 기도합시다.

I also wish to entrust to the Lord the maritime workers who have fallen victim to the conflict. I pray for the deceased, the wounded and their families. Land, sky and sea were all created for life and peace! Let us also pray for all the migrants who have died at sea, especially those who lost their lives in recent days off the coast of Crete.

또한 저는 이번 분쟁으로 희생된 해양 노동자들을 주님께 의탁하고 싶습니다. 저는 사망자와 부상자, 그리고 그 유가족들을 위해 기도합니다. 땅과 하늘과 바다는 모두 생명과 평화를 위해 창조되었습니다! 바다에서 목숨을 잃은 모든 이주민들, 특히 최근 크레타 해안에서 목숨을 잃은 이주민들을 위해서도 기도합시다.

I greet and thank all of you – both Romans and pilgrims – who have taken part in this liturgy! Together, let us now turn to the Virgin Mary, entrusting all our prayers to her intercession. May she guide us during these holy days, so that we may follow Jesus, our Savior, with faith and love.

이 전례에 참여해주신 모든 분들, 로마 시민 여러분과 순례자 여러분께 인사드리고 감사드립니다! 이제 우리 모두 동정 성모 마리아께 향하여, 우리의 모든 기도를 그분의 전구에 의탁합시다. 성모 마리아여, 이 성주간에 저희를 인도하시어 저희가 믿음과 사랑으로 우리의 구세주 예수님을 따르게 하소서!
