모세의 자리 the chair of Moses

이에 예수께서 무리와 제자들에게 말씀하여 가라사대 서기관들과 바리새인들이 모세의 자리에 앉았으니 그러므로 무엇이든지 저희의 말하는 바는 행하고 지키되 저희의 하는 행위는 본받지 말라 저희는 말만 하고 행치 아니하며 또 무거운 짐을 묶어 사람의 어깨에 지우되 자기는 이것을 한 손가락으로도 움직이려 하지 아니하며 저희 모든 행위를 사람에게 보이고자 하여 하나니 곧 그 차는 경문을 넓게 하며 옷술을 크게 하고 잔치의 상석과 회당의 상좌와 시장에서 문안 받는 것과 사람에게 랍비라 칭함을 받는 것을 좋아하느니라 그러나 너희는 랍비라 칭함을 받지 말라 너희 선생은 하나이요 너희는 다 형제니라 땅에 있는 자를 아비라 하지 말라 너희 아버지는 하나이시니 곧 하늘에 계신 자시니라 또한 지도자라 칭함을 받지 말라 너희 지도자는 하나이니 곧 그리스도니라 너희 중에 큰 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되어야 하리라 누구든지 자기를 높이는 자는 낮아지고 누구든지 자기를 낮추는 자는 높아지리라  마태복음 23:1-12

Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. "They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger. "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments."They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men. "But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. "Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. "But the greatest among you shall be your servant. "Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.  Matthew 23:1-12

성경은 시대를 초월하여 주님이 오늘 우리에게 보내시는 편지입니다. 그런데 비밀편지입니다. 표면적으로 보이는 내용 이면에 진짜 내용이 숨겨져 있습니다. 오늘 본문도 그러합니다. “서기관들과 바리새인들이 모세의 자리에 앉았다.”라고 시작합니다. 그리고 그 다른 비교로 선생, 아비, 지도자를 언급하십니다. 엄밀하게 이야기하자면 이 직군들은 높은 자리를 지칭하지 않습니다. 오히려 높다면 세상의 왕을 언급하는 것이 더 적당할 것입니다.

“때가 오래므로 너희가 마땅히 선생이 될 터인데” 히브리서 5:12 이렇게 기록한 곳도 있습니다. 그것은 당연한 일입니다. 선생, 아비, 지도자는 마치 구약의 기름부음 받은 자들, 즉 왕, 선지자, 제사장을 떠올리게 합니다. 그리고 그 때의 왕은 소위 ‘세상의 왕들’이 사람들 위에 군림하는 것과 같지 않음을 상기하게 합니다. 그리고 이어서 주님은 너희가 마땅히 섬기는 자가 되어야 할 것이라고 덧붙여 말씀하십니다.

그렇게 보자면 오늘 본문에서 주님이 하고자 하신 말씀은 마치 높은 자리에 앉지 말고 오히려 낮은 자리에서 서로 섬기는 사람이 되어라 라고 하시는 것처럼 해석할 수 있습니다. 이는 실제로도 목회현장에서 적용해야 할 내용임에는 틀림없습니다. 많은 목회자와 교회의 지도자들이 마치 세상의 왕들처럼 사람 위에 군림하고 저들을 지배하려 하고 있습니다. 이는 반드시 시정되어야 하고 주님 말씀대로 서로 섬기는 형제의 예로 대해야 할 것입니다.

그러나 여기에는 위에서 말씀드린대로 이면의 내용이 담겨 있고 그것을 알게 하시는 힌트가 남겨 있습니다. 그것은 비로 “모세의 자리”입니다. 성경에 등장하는 선진들은 주님의 여러가지 역할 중 어떠한 부분을 보이고 있습니다. 예를 들어 보아스와 다윗왕은 주님의 대속주로서의 역할을 보여줍니다. 그러면 모세는 어떠할까요? 모세가 이스라엘 백성을 인도한 애굽에서 광야까지의 전과정에 대속의 개념은 적용되지 않습니다. 그것은 오직 가나안에 들어간 후에 비로소 시작되었습니다.

모세는 구세주의 역할입니다. 이는 그의 이름이 ‘건져냄’이라는 의미를 가지고 있다는 사실에서도 알 수 있습니다. 그래서 오늘 본문에 주님이 바리새인들과 서기관들에 대해 말씀하실 때 그들이 모세의 자리에 앉았다고 하신 데에는 바로 이 구세주로서의 자리라는 의미가 담겨 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 오늘 말씀에서 오직 높은 자리이냐 낮은 자리이냐 만으로 주님의 의도를 이해하고 지나간다면 진정한 주님의 의도하심을 놓치고 가는 결과가 됩니다.

즉 주님의 말씀대로라면 바리새인과 서기관들이 앉은 자리는 높고 낮음의 자리가 아닌 모세의 자리, 즉 구세주의 자리라는 것입니다. 이는 중보, 혹은 매개자의 자리를 말합니다. 이는 분명한 역할이 있습니다. 하나님과 하나님의 백성 사이를 중보하는 역할입니다. 즉 아버지의 언약을 자녀들에게 알게 하고 자녀들의 마음을 믿음에 이르게 하여 결국 연합의 상태에 이르게 하는 것입니다. 이것이 매개의 역할입니다.

사람들이 특히 기독교인들이 흔히 하는 오해 중 하나는 스스로 자신을 구원하려 한다는 것입니다. 인생은 누구도 자신을 구원하지 못합니다. 이것을 전적부패라고 합니다. 오직 우리의 의는 보내신 자, 예수 그리스도가 그 모든 사역의 끝에 우리에게 오셔서 우리와 하나 되어 주심을 믿는 믿음으로 구원을 얻는 것입니다. 바로 이를 알게 하는 것이 복음을 맡은 자들의 구세주로서의 매개자의 역할입니다. 실상 높고 낮음은 문제가 되지 않습니다.

The Bible is timeless and is a letter from the Lord to us today. But it's a secret letter. There's a real content hidden behind what you see on the surface. So is today's text. It starts with, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat in Moses' seat." And the other comparisons refer to the teacher, the father, and the leader. Strictly speaking, these positions don't refer to high positions. Rather, it would be more appropriate to refer to the king of the world if it were high.

"You deserve to be a teacher because it's a long time." There's a Hebrew testament like this. No wonder, sir, the leader reminds me of the oiled men of the Old Testament, the king, the prophet, the priest. And the king reminds me that it's not the same as the so-called kings of the world reign over people. Then the Lord goes on to say, "You deserve to be your servants."

In that way, what the Lord wanted to say in today's text can be interpreted as if he were not sitting in a high position, but rather serving each other in a low position. This must actually be applied in the pastoral field. Like kings of the world, many pastors and church leaders are attempting to reign over people and dominate them. This must be corrected and treated as an example of brothers serving each other, as the Lord says.

But here, as I said above, is what's behind it and a hint is left to know it. It is the rain, "the seat of Moses." The Biblical advancements represent some of the Lord's many different roles. For example, Boas and King David show his role as lord of the Lord. So what about Moses? The concept of subjugation did not apply to the whole process from Egypt to the wilderness, where Moses led the Israelites. It only began after entering Canaan.

Moses is the role of savior, and you can see from the fact that his name means 'to be taken away.' So in the text today, when the Lord speaks of the Pharisees and the scribes, he says that they have been seated in Moses' seat, which is the position of savior. Therefore, if you understand the Lord's intention and pass it only by high or low positions in today's Word, it will result in missing the true Lord's intention.

In other words, according to the Lord, the seat of Moses, or the seat of the savior, is not the seat of the Pharisees and secretaries. This refers to the position of the middle man, or the mediator. It has a clear role to play. It is the role of emphasizing between God and his people. In other words, it is to make the children aware of the father's covenant and to bring their hearts to faith, eventually leading to a state of union. This is the role of mediation.

One of the common misconceptions people have, especially Christians, is that they try to save themselves. No one can save themselves in life. This is called total corruption. Our only righteousness is that we are saved by the belief that Jesus Christ, the sender, comes to us at the end of all his ministry and unites with us. It is the role of a mediator as a savior of those in charge of the gospel to know this. In fact, high and low are not a problem.
