1. GENERAL INFORMATION REGARDING LOCAL WASTEWATER SECTOR
○ Vietnam is facing the challenge of trying to keep pace with increasing environmental pollution associated with rapid urbanization, especially in the larger cities. Over the past 20 years, the Government of Vietnam has made considerable effort to develop urban sanitation policies, legislations and regulations and to invest in urban sanitation including wastewater treatment systems.
○ Since 1998, the Government has initiated policies and provided investment to improve urban sanitation resulting in significant progress in development of the wastewater sector. Achievements are as follows: - Provision of wastewater services to the urban poor has been impressive with open defecation now eliminated. - Access to toilets is now 94%, with 90% of households using septic tanks as a means of on-site treatment. - 60% of households dispose of wastewater to a public sewerage system, primarily comprising combined systems. - By 2012 some 17 urban wastewater systems had been constructed in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang and another five systems in provincial towns and cities with a total capacity of 530,000 cubic meters per day (㎥/day) - Currently some 30 new wastewater systems, primarily comprising combined systems, are in the design/construction phase. - During the past decade annual sanitation sector investment has been USD 150 million or USD 2.1 billion for drainage and wastewater during the period 1995-2009. This represents 0.45 % of GDP annually.
○ Vietnam is a large and potential market for wastewater treatment, wastewater, and solid waste companies who have new methods and new technology from Korea.
○ Reviewing Vietnam’s environmental picture, deputy director of Pollution Control Department, Environment Protection Administration said that the amount of wastewater haven’t treated up to 1.5 billion ㎥ per year in which, wastewater of urban zone and industrial park hold 1 billion ㎥. Everyday, Hanoi eliminates over 260,000㎥ industrial wastewater and Dong Nai River receive 1.5 billion ㎥ of industrial wastewater.
○ Noteworthy, around 90% of 500 paper manufacturing enterprises in the country do not have wastewater treatment system, or do not reach the standard, or not regular operation.
○ Also to Mr. Loi - Deputy Director of Pollution Control Department, Environment Protection Administration, investment demand for environmental protection of 16 industries and economic sectors in Vietnam is expected to more than $7.6 billion, some industries need a large amount of money such as seafood, steel, electricity, paper, chemicals, industrial parks, and textile etc. According to solid waste project of three key economic areas with 7 solid waste treatment, areas will be built from now to 2020 with a total investment approximately $600 million.
2. BRANDS OF PUMPS FOR SEWAGE & WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS
○ So far, local production is comparatively strong with a comprehensive range of offers. From pure domestic manufacturers such as Mitsuky Pump Factory, Dynamic Pumps JSC to joint ventures between local producers and foreign brands like Sena Group (branded Selton), and Hai Duong Ebara (between Hai Duong Pump and Ebara Japan), locally made products have gained a considerable position in the customer’s mindset. Selton Brand from Sena Group claims its technology is from Korea and marketed Selton Pump products along with Hanil’s made in Korea items, which also promotes sale volume of the domestic brand.
○ Regarding import sources, there are so many suppliers from both western countries like the United States, Italy, Germany, Denmark and the UK, and Asian sources such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, ASEAN (Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand), and India.
○ For industrial applications, sanitary centrifugal pumps, oil & gas pumps, chemical pumps, vacuum pumps, flexible pumps, and wastewater pumps supplied by the western makers are supposed to ultimately lead the whole market with America, Germany, Italy and Denmark ranked top trusted origins. According to Grundfos, the Danish – based brand is currently dominating this segment. However, they have not set up any producing facility in Vietnam. Instead, all of the pumps items are imported from the Corporate’s factories in China. Other hi-tech pump brands that can be listed are Finishthompson (USA), Milton Roy (USA), Sandpiper (USA), KPA (Germany), Vogelsang (Germany), Ragazzini (Italy), Affetti (Italy) and Alfa Lavan (UK).
○ In the segment of water pump for household and industrial water supply, Japanese, Italian, and Korean brands are taking hold for the largest share. Ebara (Japan), National (Japan), Hitachi (Japan), Hanil (Korea), Shinil (Korea), Pedrolo (Italy), Pentax (Italy) and Panasonic (made in Indonesia) are the most popular within the application segment. Currently there is no Chinese brand to account for significant position, but the fact that the country is the manufacturing base for pump manufacturers all around the world has turned China into one of the largest supplier for Vietnam.
○ To many local pump dealers, Korean products are highly appreciated thanks to the reliable performance at more affordable prices than those of similar Japanese or Italian brands. However, to some extent, the country is still lax of higher-grade technology for large capacity and complicated requirement. Many buyers expect to heard of more Korean brands specialized in industrial application in food stuff, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, chemical, oil & gas.
3. IMPORT POLICY:
□ The import export figures of the HS Code 8413.70 in the three years 2010-2011-2012 from the Custom Yearbook on Foreign Merchandise Trade.
○ It should be noticed that the statistic figures on import-export merchandise is done rather slowly by the Custom Office. For now, only statistic figures till the year 2012 is the most updated one. The figures for 2013 are expected to be released in the middle of 2014. It should be also mentioned that the statistics provided here do not reflect the brands’ original, but instead the production original. In this interpretation, China is the manufacturing base of many international pump producers, which contribute to the country significant share in the table. However, the real account owners should be claimed for brands in Japan, USA, Germany, Italy, and Korea.
