Manchester United are back to winning ways in The Premiership after a thrilling 3-2 victory at Fulham.

All the goals in a riproaring contest at Craven Cottage arrived in the first half with Collins John giving Fulham an early lead before Ruud van Nistelrooy levelled from the penalty spot.

Wayne Rooney quickly fired United into the ascendancy, only for Claus Jensen to level with a free kick, before van Nistelrooy struck the killer blow just before the interval.

Sir Alex Ferguson delighted the travelling United hordes by reverting to a 4-4-2 formation but it was the Fulham fans who cheered first when they took the lead inside two minutes.

John collected Brian McBride's flick-on but saw his initial shot blocked by Rio Ferdinand. The young Dutch striker gathered up the loose ball and fired past Edwin van der Sar with the aid of a deflection from John O'Shea.

United responded quickly with Ryan Giggs' low pass collected by Rooney in the area but he was forced into an acute position by Mark Crossley before Ferdinand's glancing header was desperately cleared by the Fulham defence.

The visitors were level on 17 minutes after a rampaging run by Park Ji-sung was unceremoniously ended by a barge in the back from Moritz Volz. Van Nistelrooy is lethal from 12 yards and he sent his spot kick just beyond the reach of Crossley.

Within two minutes, United were in front and Park was again the architect behind the goal. Giggs played the ball to the South Korean, who produced a superb pass for Rooney to drill beyond the Fulham keeper.

Inspired by the goal, Rooney then tried his luck from the halfway line, only for more slack defending from Ferdinand to allow Fulham to draw level on 28 minutes.

Darren Fletcher rashly brought down Luis Boa Morte on the left and the free kick was curled in by Claus Jensen. Ferdinand went to volley the ball, only to pull out of the clearance at the last minute, leaving van der Sar with no time to prevent the free kick creeping in at the far post.

Fulham's morale was clearly on the up and van der Sar had to beat out a Steed Malbranque volley before the former Cottagers keeper saved from Papa Bouba Diop.

Giggs was revelling in playing wide on the left flank and a mesmerising run took him past three players before more frantic defending averted the danger for the hosts.

But a lapse in concentration cost Fulham dear on the stroke of half time when they failed to intercept a low pass forward and Park unselfishly squared the ball for van Nistelrooy to score into an empty net.

The second half was always going to struggle to match the first period but there was still an open flavour to the gripping contest.

Rooney should have joined van Nistelrooy on two goals for the game when he capitalised on a Zat Knight mistake but he placed his shot wide of the target when through on goal.

McBride should have done better with a header from Niclas Jensen's cross while Diop, who scored a screamer in this fixture last season, was narrowly wide with a thumping drive from 35 yards.

Crossley saved easily from Rooney as Fulham were continually forced to resort to some last-ditch defending to prevent the likes of Giggs and Park getting on the scoresheet.

After a lull in the excitement, Fulham rallied in the latter stages and should have equalised when Tomasz Radzinski crossed to the far post for fellow substitute Heidar Helguson but the Icelandic striker headed off target when unmarked three yards out.

Radzinski then fired straight at van der Sar but United clung on for a priceless victory which will give them renewed vigour in their quest to reel in runaway leaders Chelsea.
