Summary:
Jesus tells Peter that in the future he will suffer a death that glorifies God, and calls him to follow Him. Peter, noticing the disciple John, asks about his fate. Jesus responds that if He wants John to remain alive until His return, it shouldn't concern Peter—his focus should be on following Jesus. This leads to a misunderstanding among the disciples that John would not die, though Jesus did not say that explicitly.
Teaching:
Jesus says, “What is that to you?” He tells us not to be overly concerned about other disciples. This is a word for us not to concern ourselves too much with other churches or how other believers are doing. It means not to interfere.
When our focus on Jesus weakens, and we start thinking about how this person or that person is doing, it doesn’t help our faith.
We should focus only on what Jesus has spoken to us personally, and not pay excessive attention to others. That kind of mindset often stems from competition, jealousy, or even resentment.
Don’t be overly concerned about others. Don’t interfere, and don’t be envious or competitive about someone else’s faith. Let’s just receive and live out the word that was given to us.
