광야와 메마른 땅이 기뻐하며

The desert and the parched land will be glad

    사막이 백합화 같이 피어 즐거워하며

    the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus,

무성하게 피어 기쁜 노래로 즐거워하며

it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.

    그것들이 여호와의 영광 곧 우리 하나님의 아름다움을 보리로다.

    they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God.

그 때에 소경의 눈이 밝을 것이며

Then will the eyes of the blind be opened

    귀머거리의 귀가 열릴 것이며

    and the ears of the deaf unstopped.

그 때에 저는 자는 사슴 같이 뛸 것이며 벙어리의 혀는 노래하리니

Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.

    이는 광야에서 물이 솟겠고 사막에서 시내가 흐를 것임이라

    Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

거기 대로가 있어 그 길을 거룩한 길이라 부르리니

And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness.

    깨끗지 못한 자는 지나지 못하겠고 오직 구속함을 입은 자들을 위하여 있게 된 것이라

    The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way;

여호와의 속량함을 얻은 자들이 돌아오되 노래하며 시온에 이르러

and the ransomed of the LORD will return. They will enter Zion with singing

    그 머리 위에 영영한 희락을 띠고 기쁨과 즐거움을

    얻으리니 슬픔과 탄식이 달아나리로다.

    everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and

    joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

주님의 여러 말씀은 비교법을 사용하고 있습니다. 비교는 갈등상황을 내포하고 있습니다. 그런 관점에서 보면 성경은 전 역사를 통하여 이러한 갈등 속에 진행되고 있음을 쉽게 발견하게 됩니다. 창조의 먼지와 하나님의 형상도 이미 갈등을 포함한 구조입니다. 에덴에서의 생명나무와 선악나무, 가안과 아벨, 노아의 방주, 가나안에 들어가는 자와 들어가지 못하는 자. 이러한 갈등 구조는 주님의 시대에서 극명하게 대조되고 있습니다.

주님은 오늘 말씀에서 전도를 말씀하십니다. 배나 더 지옥 자식이 되게 하는 전도와 비교될 것은 생명의 전도입니다. 교회가 전도하는 것을 혐오하는 이들도 있습니다. 그러나 진정한 의미의 전도를 부정하는 것은 아닐 것입니다. 교회가 마치 기업처럼 사람을 모으고 돈을 모으고 권력을 쥐고 흔드는 그런 방식에 혐오를 느낄 것입니다. 하나님은 숫자로 기뻐하지 않으신다 하여 대형교회는 무조건 악이라고 보는 것은 과연 옳은 자세일까요?

주님의 말씀과 성경 역사에서 나타나는 갈등 구조는 의외로 신불신 간의 갈등보다 믿는 사람들 가운데서 일어나는 경우를 많이 볼 수 있습니다. 생명나무와 선악나무, 가인과 아벨의 경우도 그러하고 가나안에 들어가는 자들과 들어가지 못한 자들의 차이도 그러합니다. 그들이 모두 믿음을 갖고 있었습니다. 물론 주님 시대에 발생한 갈등 역시 하나님과 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 가진 이들 사이에서의 상황이었습니다.

그러면 무엇이 이 갈등의 근본 원인일까요? 그것은 그리스도에 대한 것인데 한 부류는 그리스도가 오셨다는 것이고 다른 한 부류는 아직 오지 않으셨다는 차이에서 비롯됩니다. 나머지는 모두 이 차이에 부속되어 나타나는 것들일 뿐입니다. 하나님을 믿지 않은 것도 아니고 그리스도가 오실 것을 믿지 않은 것도 아닙니다. 장래 오실 그리스도를 믿는 것과 현재 오셨다는 것을 믿는 것의 차이가 모든 차이를 만듭니다.

아직 오지 않았다는 것을 냉정하게 다시 표현하면 현재 나와 함께 하지 않는다는 뜻이고 그것은 나의 의가 나의 신앙의 주체가 되어 있음을 시인하는 결과가 됩니다. 하지만 만일 장래의 언제인가 주께서 오실 때가 되셔서 실제 주님의 세상이 되었다면 그 때 이루어질 모든 일들이 현재 주님이 오셨다고 믿는 이들에게는 실상으로 이루어집니다. 이것이 하나님의 주권적 은혜에 근거한 신앙과 자의에 근거한 신앙의 근본적 원인의 차이입니다.

전도는 아브라함에게 주신 언약 두 가지 중 한 가지를 표방합니다. 그것은 네 자손이 하늘의 별 수 바다의 모래수처럼 많게 해 주시겠다는 것입니다. 이것은 가나안 땅에 대한 약속과 함께 성취되어집니다. 여기서 가나안 땅이라는 언약의 성취는 정확히 그리스도와 연합의 의미를 나타냅니다. 그러면 하늘의 별 수, 바다의 모래 수의 언약은 어떻게 성취되어야 할까요? 하나님은 숫자를 기뻐하지 않으셔서 계수된 이스라엘 60만을 모래에 다 죽게 하셨습니다.

그리고 가나안에서의 숫자는 생명의 전도, 즉 아브라함이 이삭을 낳는 그 원리로 이루어질 것을 보여주신 것입니다. 우리가 사모하고 기다리는 것은 그리스도 안에서 하나님과 우리가 연합하여 하나님의 주권적 은혜가 우리 인격을 통해 역사하시고 드러나게 하시는 그러한 전도입니다. 그러는 중에 우리의 상황이 현재와 같던지 구름 떼처럼 많게 하시던지 그것은 우리 관심사가 아니기를 바라는 것입니다.

The Lord’s various sayings use the method of comparison. Comparison contains a situation of conflict. From that perspective, it is easy to see that throughout all history the Bible has unfolded amid such conflict. Even the dust of creation and the image of God are already structures that include conflict. The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in Eden, Cain and Abel, Noah’s Ark, those who enter Canaan and those who do not. This structure of conflict is sharply contrasted in the Lord’s time.

In today’s message, the Lord speaks of evangelism. The evangelism that makes us more like hellish children is to be contrasted with the evangelism of life. There are also people who dislike the church evangelizing. However, it would not be denying evangelism in the true sense. You will feel disgust at the way the church gathers people and money like a corporation, and wields and manipulates power. Is it really the right attitude to view large churches as inherently evil simply because God is not pleased with numbers?

The structures of conflict that appear in the Lord’s words and biblical history occur more often among believers than among gods and unbelievers. The same is true of the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and of Cain and Abel, and also of the difference between those who enter Canaan and those who do not. They were all in faith. Of course, the conflict that arose in the Lord’s time was also a situation among those who had faith in God and in Christ.

Then what is the root cause of this conflict? It concerns Christ, and it arises from the difference that one category is that Christ has come, while the other is that He has not yet come. The rest are all merely things that appear attached to this difference. It is not that I do not believe in God, nor do I not believe that Christ will come. The difference between believing in Christ who will come in the future and believing in the fact that He has already come now makes all the difference.

If I coldly restate that it has not yet come, it means that it is not with me now, and that is the result of acknowledging that my righteousness has become the subject of my faith. But if, at some point in the future, the time comes for the Lord to come and the world of the Lord has indeed become real, then everything that will be accomplished then will come to pass in reality for those who believe that the Lord has already come. This is the fundamental difference between faith based on God’s sovereign grace and faith based on self-righteousness.

Preaching upholds one of the two covenants given to Abraham. It means that your descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. This is fulfilled together with the promise of the land of Canaan. Here, the fulfillment of the covenant called the land of Canaan precisely signifies the meaning of union with Christ. Then how should the covenant of the number of the stars in the sky and the number of the grains of sand in the sea be fulfilled? God did not delight in numbers, so He caused all 600,000 counted Israelites to die in the sand.

And the number in Canaan showed that it would be accomplished by the evangelism of life—that is, by the principle by which Abraham bore Isaac. What we long for and await is such evangelism in which, in Christ, God and we are united, and through our person God’s sovereign grace works and makes itself manifest. In doing so, whether our situation remains the same as it is now or becomes as numerous as a cloud, we hope it is not our concern.
