Summary:
All people, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin. Scripture testifies that no one is righteous—not even one. No one understands or seeks God; all have turned aside and become useless. Their speech is corrupt, and their actions are violent and destructive. The fear of God is absent. The Law speaks to those under it so that every mouth may be closed and all the world held accountable to God. No one is justified before Him by works of the Law; through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Teaching:
When a person becomes wicked, they no longer fear God. But when a person becomes righteous, they do fear God. This is the clear dividing line. Those who do not fear God say whatever they want and commit whatever they please. At the same time, they constantly make excuses, drowning in self-pity and self-justification.
God’s judgment is truly righteous and full of grace. Without His judgment, our lives would wander aimlessly, and there would be no hope for those who want to live by faith. God's judgment is the way, the truth, and the life for our lives.
The Law leads us to the cross, to the path where the Lord was crucified. So let us be honest—since we are all sinners, no one can be justified by their own flesh. Through the Word we’ve received, we come to recognize sin as sin more clearly, and we are left without excuse.
When we read and hear the Word, let us see ourselves honestly through it.
