교독문 Responsive Reading 이사야 Isaiah 40
A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD
make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain
and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level,
the rugged places a plain.
And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it.
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
A voice says, "Cry out." And I said, "What shall I cry?"
"All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. "You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! Matthew 23:23-24

Today’s passage is not about whether or not to tithe. The Lord was speaking of the fulfillment of the Law, just as He did in Matthew 5.
Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. Matthew 5:17
Many people believe that after the gospel of the Lord came, the law was nullified. Now, they say they are merely keeping the new commandment to love one another. However, if we deeply consider that God, the one who gave the law, gave it in the transcendent, eternal realm, this issue does not seem to be something that can be taken lightly. Of course, taking these points into consideration is by no means intended to turn toward legalism.
Of course, when He providentially guided an era, He made the object He saw serve its purpose. The trees of the Garden of Eden, Noah’s Ark, the land of Canaan, the tabernacle and the temple, and the temple of Zerubbabel, and finally, in the end, Jesus Christ completed everything. Today, I would like to look into the meaning of this completion. The Lord also said that He did not come to abolish the law, but to make it complete. And the objects of history in each age, when that providence was completed, no longer remained in the world and all disappeared.
It is not so difficult to think that this would be the case with the law as well. The objects of providence mentioned in each of the times above—the Garden of Eden, the Ark of Noah, the tabernacle and the temple, and the land of Canaan—lead us to realize that the culmination of that providence is Jesus Christ. And by Jesus Christ’s union with us, we can realize that all the objects of providence are fulfilled in our person. This application is no different with the law.
I have said before that the Law is based on the commandments, and the commandments should be understood as a covenant. The covenant is given by God, and the one who fulfills it is also God. And that covenant is ultimately fulfilled, as Immanuel, through our union with Jesus Christ. But now what we are about to think deeply about is the greater importance of the law that the Lord spoke of. If we put what He called righteousness, faithfulness, and God into the expressions we often use, they are justice, mercy, and trust.
This is not that I have picked three good things out of many virtues. And these three can actually be regarded as the virtues of a king. We know well that the Gospel of Matthew testifies of Jesus Christ, the King, to the Jews. But now we come to realize that the tone of the words the Lord is speaking to the Pharisees is more focused on how they treat other people—God’s children—according to the law, rather than on what attitude they should have before God.
Just as He says to the Pharisees, the Lord also speaks to us today. The fulfillment of the law is to have the mind of Christ as King. It is not the Lord’s mind to use the law as a tool of self-righteousness, to condemn others by claiming that he himself is keeping it. I myself do not possess a serious sense of guilt, nor do I wield a merciless sword at others, asking why I still fall short of this level.
Trust is not believing in a person’s righteousness, goodness, and merits. It is believing that only the providence of the Lord, whom we have chosen, will ultimately be fulfilled. The three virtues the Lord lists are not the virtues of a worldly king. These are the virtues of the Lord as a king. It is a virtue concerning Christ’s kingly office that connects God and His children. It is clear that the Lord also deeply loved the Pharisees of that time. We are no different from them today.
