Looking at a Mosquito
By Jung Ha-sun
Even if not born in deep waters or great rivers,
Never resenting the water nor losing itself,
It has waded through the darkness; with wings too weak to fly high,
Huddling behind the quiet shade of a leaf,
Rubbing its feet over its shoulders—
A subtle flutter of inner wings in a long, slender prayer.
With that single micro-vibration, down to the very single stream of longing
Flowing within the capillaries of the heart,
Exchanging heat through resonance and vibration,
Even if those possessing the light have never lent an ear,
It pierces the darkness seeking invisible bloodlines,
Carrying the world upon its back.
The earnestness of a mother living on leaves to sustain a meal for her child,
Trying to gain a single drop of blood from those with thick veins,
Even when falling off a cliff by F-kill or electronic mosquito coils,
Rubbing its bruised head against the impact,
It returns to dust without a single trace of crying.

Explanations & Critical Commentary
Core Theme: The struggle for survival of a lowly creature, maternal devotion, and the tragic fate of the marginalized.
Explanation: In this poem, the mosquito is not merely a pest that bothers humans. Though not born in a great river (symbolizing power or an abundant environment), it is reinterpreted as a "survivor" who wades through darkness without blaming its circumstances, and a "mother" who risks her life to reach those with thick veins (the privileged/strong) for the sake of her child. The mosquito's movement of huddling behind a leaf and rubbing its legs is sublimated into an earnest "prayer" for survival. Falling helplessly into dust before the overwhelming violence of insecticides without a single cry, its tragic end maximizes the weight of life and poignant heroism borne by the weak.
Critical Commentary: The poet expands the micro-existence of a mosquito into a macro-sublimity of life by connecting its faint wingbeats to the "longing in capillaries." Amid the cold indifference of the privileged class—represented by "those possessing the light" and "those with thick veins"—the image of the mosquito fighting to sustain life only to perish deeply touches upon the portrait of marginalized workers, the weak in modern society, and self-sacrificing parents. It is a powerful lyrical poem distinguished by meticulous observation and profound empathy.
