Brothers and sisters, good afternoon and happy Sunday! As we continue our journey through the Easter season, today’s Gospel presents us with Jesus’ comparison of himself to a shepherd and also to the gate of the sheepfold (cf. Jn 10:1–10).

형제자매 여러분, 안녕하세요. 복된 주일입니다. 우리가 부활시기의 여정을 계속하는 동안, 오늘의 복음은 예수님께서 자신을 목자로 그리고 또한 양 우리의 문으로 비유하시는 것을 소개합니다. (요한복음 10,1-10 참조)

Jesus draws a contrast between the shepherd and the thief. Indeed, he says that “anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit” (v. 1). He goes on to make this even clearer: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (v. 10). The difference is clear: the shepherd has a special bond with his sheep and can therefore enter by the gate of the sheepfold. On the other hand, if someone has to climb over the fence to get in, then he is certainly a thief who wants to steal the sheep.

예수님께서 목자와 도둑 사이의 차이를 묘사하십니다. 실제로 예수님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “양 우리에 들어갈 때에 문으로 들어가지 않고 다른 데로 넘어 들어가는 자는 도둑이며 강도다.” (1절) 계속해서 그것을 더 분명하게 말씀하십니다. “도둑은 다만 훔치고 죽이고 멸망시키려고 올 뿐이다. 그러나 나는 양들이 생명을 얻고 또 얻어 넘치게 하려고 왔다.” (10절) 차이점은 분명합니다. 목자는 양들과 특별한 유대감을 가지고 있으므로 양 우리 문으로 들어갈 수 있습니다. 반면에 어떤 사람이 담을 넘어 들어가야 한다면, 그는 분명 양을 훔치려는 도둑입니다.

Jesus is telling us that he is bound to us by a relationship of friendship, for he knows us, calls us by name, guides us, and — just as the shepherd does with his sheep — searches for us when we are lost and binds up our wounds when we are sick (cf. Ezek 34:16). Jesus does not come as a thief to take away our life and our freedom, but to lead us along the paths of righteousness. He does not come to ensnare or deceive our conscience, but to illuminate it with the light of his wisdom. He does not come to taint our earthly joys, but to open them to a fuller and more lasting happiness. Those who entrust themselves to him have nothing to fear, for he does not deprive us of life, but comes to give it to us in abundance (cf. v. 10).

예수님께서 우리와 우정의 관계로 묶여있으시다 고 말씀하십니다. 그분께서 우리를 아시고, 우리를 이름으로 부르시고, 우리를 이끄시고, 그리고 - 목자가 그의 양들에게 하듯이 - 우리가 길을 잃을 때 우리를 찾으시고, 우리가 아플 때, 우리의 상처를 싸매 주시기 때문입니다. (에제키엘 34,16 참조) 예수님께서는 우리의 생명과 자유를 뺏으려는 도둑처럼 오신 것이 아니고 우리를 의로운 길로 인도하시기 위해 오셨습니다. 예수님께서는 우리의 양심을 옭아매거나 속이러 오지 않으시고, 그분의 지혜의 빛으로 우리의 양심을 비추기 위해 오셨습니다. 예수님께서는 우리의 세상적인 기쁨을 막으려고 오지 않으시고 그 기쁨을 더욱 충만하고 영원한 행복으로 이끄시기 위해 오셨습니다. 그분께 자신을 맡기는 사람은 두려워할 것이 없습니다. 그분께서 우리의 생명을 뺏으러 오신 것이 아니라 우리에게 생명을 주시어 넘치게 하려고 오시기 때문입니다. Brothers and sisters, we are invited to reflect on, and especially to be vigilant over, the gate to our heart and our life, because whoever enters may either increase our joy, or steal it from us like a thief. “Thieves” can take many forms. They could be: people who, regardless of appearances, suppress our freedom or fail to respect our dignity; beliefs and biases that prevent us from viewing others and life with serenity; mistaken ideas that can lead us to make negative choices; or superficial and consumeristic lifestyles that leave us empty on the inside and push us to live constantly beyond ourselves. And let us not forget those “thieves” who, by pillaging the earth’s resources, waging blood-thirsty wars, or fueling evil in any form, do nothing but rob each of us of the possibility of a future marked by peace and serenity.

형제자매 여러분, 우리는 우리의 마음으로 들어오는 문과 우리의 삶으로 들어오는 문에 대해 묵상하고 특별히 경계하라는 초대를 받았습니다. 왜냐하면 누구든 그 문을 들어오는 사람은 우리의 기쁨을 더해주거나 도둑처럼 훔쳐갈지 모르기 때문입니다. “도둑”은 여러 가지 모습으로 나타날 수 있습니다. 그들은, 겉모습과 상관없이 우리의 자유를 억압하거나 우리의 존엄성을 존중하지 않는 사람들, 우리가 타인과 삶을 평온한 마음으로 바라보지 못하게 하는 믿음과 편견, 우리가 부정적인 선택을 하도록 이끌 수 있는 잘못된 생각들, 또는 우리를 내면의 공허함으로 처넣거나 우리를 우리 분수를 넘어 살도록 밀어붙이는 피상적이고 소비지상주의 적 생활 방식일 수 있습니다. 그리고 지구의 자원을 약탈함으로써, 피에 굶주린 전쟁을 일으킴으로써, 그리고 온갖 형태의 악을 조장함으로써, 오직 우리 각자에게서 평화롭고 평온한 미래의 가능성을 강도질하는 “도둑들”을 잊지 맙시다.

We must ask ourselves: Who do we want to guide us in life? Which “thieves” have tried to break into our fold? Have they succeeded, or have we managed to ward them off?

우리는 스스로에게 물어봐야 합니다. 우리는 누가 우리 삶의 길잡이가 되기를 원하는가? 어떤 “도둑”들이 우리의 우리를 침입하려고 했는가? 그들이 성공했는가, 아니면 우리가 그들을 쫓아냈는가?

Today, the Gospel invites us to trust in the Lord. He does not come to take anything from us. On the contrary, he is the Good Shepherd who increases life and offers it to us in abundance. May the Blessed Virgin Mary always accompany us on our journey and intercede for us and for the whole world.

오늘, 복음은 우리에게 주님을 신뢰하라고 초대합니다. 주님께서는 우리에게서 무엇을 빼앗으러 오지 않으십니다. 오히려, 그분은 생명을 더하시고 우리에게 생명을 풍성하게 주시는 착한 목자이십니다. 복되신 동정 마리아님, 저희의 여정에 항상 동반하시고, 저희와 온 세상을 위해 전구하여 주소서!

Dear brothers and sisters, Today marks the 40th anniversary of the tragic incident in Chernobyl, which left a lasting mark on the conscience of humanity. It serves as a warning regarding the inherent risks of using increasingly powerful technologies. Let us entrust those who died and all who still suffer from the aftermath of the disaster to God’s mercy. I hope that discernment and responsibility will always prevail at every level of decision-making so that all use of atomic energy may be placed at the service of life and peace.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 오늘은 인류의 양심에 지울 수 없는 상처를 남긴 체르노빌 참사 40주년이 되는 날입니다. 이 참사는 점점 더 강력해지는 기술의 사용에 내재된 위험성을 일깨워 줍니다. 희생자들과 여전히 참사의 여파로 고통 받는 모든 이들을 하느님의 자비에 의탁합시다. 모든 의사결정 과정에서 분별력과 책임감이 항상 우선시되어 원자력 에너지의 모든 사용이 생명과 평화를 위해 사용되기를 바랍니다.

I now extend my greetings to you, Romans and pilgrims from various countries: welcome! I greet the Knights and Dames of the Order of Saint George and the European Order of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. I welcome the children of the “Malva” dance group from Brovary, in Ukraine; the Cantica Sacra Choir from the Archdiocese of Trnava in Slovakia; the faithful from Vienna, Madrid and the Canary Islands; and the teachers of the “São Tomás” School in Lisbon.
