Summary:
Paul addresses a potential misunderstanding of grace, asking if believers can sin since they are not under the Law but under grace. He answers firmly: no. He explains that people become slaves to whatever they obey - either sin, which leads to death, or obedience, which leads to righteousness. He thanks God that, although the believers were once slaves to sin, they have now become obedient from the heart to the teachings of Christ and have been freed from sin, becoming slaves to righteousness. Paul uses human terms to explain this concept clearly, urging believers to now present themselves as slaves to righteousness for sanctification, just as they once presented themselves to impurity.
Teaching:
The principle is that those under grace must accept the necessity that they cannot go on sinning - because only with that conviction is true repentance possible.
The gospel taught to us is a form of teaching. We come to know this form through Scripture, and we are to obey it from the heart and live it out.
When we accept and obey this form of teaching even in our weak bodies, we become slaves to righteousness and instruments of righteousness.
When God calls us His Holy People, it means that we became slaves to righteousness. Let us live under grace according to God’s holy will and become the Holy People of God, leading to sanctification.
