POPE LEO XIV, REGINA CAELI, 5th Sunday of Easter, St Peter's Square, 3 May 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! During the Easter season, like the early Church, we return to the words of Jesus, which reveal their full meaning in the light of his passion, death and resurrection. What once eluded the disciples or caused them distress now comes back to their minds, warms their hearts and fills them with hope.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 예수님의 말씀은 그분의 수난, 죽음, 그리고 부활의 빛 안에서 말씀의 진정한 의미가 온전히 드러납니다. 우리는 부활 시기에 초대 교회처럼 예수님의 말씀으로 돌아갑니다. 제자들이 이해하지 못했거나 제자들을 괴롭게 했던 그 말씀이 이제 그들의 마음에 돌아오고, 그들의 가슴을 따뜻하게 하고, 그들에게 벅찬 희망을 줍니다.

The Gospel proclaimed this Sunday presents the Master’s dialogue with his disciples during the Last Supper. In particular, we hear a promise that involves us from this moment onwards in the mystery of his Resurrection. Jesus says: “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also” (Jn 14:3). The Apostles thus discover that God has a place for everyone. Two of them had already experienced this during their first encounter with Jesus by the river Jordan. Jesus noticed them following him and invited them that afternoon to visit where he was staying (cf. Jn 1:39). Even now, faced with death, Jesus speaks of a home, but this time a very large one. It is the house of his Father and our Father, where there is room for all. The Son describes himself as the servant who prepares the rooms, so that every brother or sister, upon arriving, may find their own room ready and feel as though they have always been longed for and are at last found.

오늘 주일에 선포된 복음은 최후의 만찬에서 예수님께서 제자들과 나누신 대화를 전합니다. 특히, 우리는 이 대화에서 우리도 이 순간부터 부활의 신비에 참여한다는 약속을 듣습니다. 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. “내가 가서 너희를 위하여 자리를 마련하면, 다시 와서 너희를 데려다가 내가 있는 곳에 너희도 같이 있게 하겠다.” (요한복음 14,3) 이로써 사도들은 하느님께서 모든 사람을 위한 처소를 마련해 두셨다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 두 사도는 요단강가에서 예수님을 처음 만났을 때 이미 이 사실을 경험했습니다. 예수님께서는 그들이 자신을 따라오는 것을 보시고 그날 오후에 자신이 머물고 있던 곳으로 초대하셨습니다. (요한복음 1:39 참조) 죽음을 앞둔 지금도 예수님께서는 집에 대해 말씀하시는데, 이번에는 아주 큰 집을 말씀하십니다. 그곳은 모든 사람을 위한 자리가 있는 아버지, 곧 우리 아버지의 집입니다. 아들은 자신을 방을 마련하는 종으로 묘사하시며, 모든 형제자매가 도착하면 자신을 위한 방이 마련되어 있는 것을 발견하고 자신들이 마치 오랫동안 기다려졌고 마침내 발견된 것 같은 느낌을 받을 것이라고 말씀하십니다.

Dear friends, in the old world in which we are still journeying, what attracts attention are exclusive places, experiences accessible only to a few and the privilege of entering where others cannot. In the new world into which the risen One leads us, however, what is most valuable is within everyone’s reach. Yet this does not make it any less attractive. On the contrary, what is open to all now brings joy. Gratitude takes the place of competition; welcome overcomes exclusion; and abundance no longer entails inequality. Above all, no one is mistaken for someone else, and no one is lost. Death threatens to erase one’s name and memory, but in God everyone is fully themselves. Truly, this is what we spend our whole lives searching for, sometimes willing to do anything just to get a little attention and recognition.

사랑하는 친구 여러분, 우리가 여전히 여행하고 있는 옛 세상에서 관심을 끄는 것은 소수만이 접근할 수 있고 다른 사람들이 들어갈 수 없고 특권이 있는 사람들만이 들어갈 수 있거나 누릴 수 있는 특별한 장소나 체험입니다. 그러나 부활하신 분께서 우리를 데리고 가시는 새로운 세상에서는 가장 소중한 것이 모두의 손이 닿는 곳에 있습니다. 그렇다고 해서 그것이 덜 매력적인 것은 아닙니다. 오히려 이제 모두에게 열려 있는 것이 기쁨을 가져다줍니다. 감사가 경쟁을 대체하고, 환영이 배척을 극복하고, 풍요가 더 이상 불평등을 수반하지 않습니다. 무엇보다도, 어느 누구도 다른 사람과 혼동되지 않고 아무도 잃지 않습니다. 죽음은 사람의 이름과 기억을 지운다고 협박하지만, 하느님 안에서 모든 사람은 온전히 자신입니다. 진정 이것이 바로 우리가 평생을 찾아 헤매는 곳이며, 때로는 약간의 관심과 인정을 받기 위해 무엇이든지 하려고 하는 곳입니다.

“Have faith,” Jesus tells us. That is the secret! “Have faith in God; have faith also in me” (Jn 14:1). It is precisely this faith that frees our hearts from the anxiety of possessing and acquiring, and from the illusion that we must pursue a position of prestige to have worth. Each person already has infinite worth in the mystery of God, which is the true reality. By loving one another as Jesus has loved us, we impart this awareness to one another. This is the new commandment; in this way, we anticipate heaven on earth and reveal to all that fraternity and peace are our calling. Indeed, through love, amidst a multitude of brothers and sisters, each one discovers that they are uniquely made.

예수님께서는 “믿어라,”라고 말씀하십니다. 그것이 비결입니다! “하느님을 믿고 또 나를 믿어라.” (요한복음 14:1) 우리의 마음을 소유와 획득에 대한 근심에서 자유롭게 하고 가치 있는 존재가 되기 위해 명예로운 지위를 추구해야 한다는 착각으로부터 자유롭게 하는 것이 바로 이 믿음입니다. 참으로 실체인 하느님의 신비 안에서 모든 사람은 이미 무한한 가치를 지니고 있습니다. 예수님께서 우리를 사랑하신 것처럼 서로를 사랑함으로써 우리는 이러한 인식을  서로에게 알려줍니다. 이것이 새 계명입니다. 이렇게 함으로써 우리는 이 땅에서 천국을 미리경험하고, 형제애와 평화가 우리의 소명이라는 것을 모두에게 드러냅니다. 참으로, 수많은 형제자매 가운데서 사랑을 통해 각자는 자신이 특별하게 창조되었다는 사실을 발견합니다.

Let us pray, then, to Mary Most Holy, Mother of the Church, that every Christian community may be a home open to all and attentive to each person.

이제 지극히 거룩하시고 교회의 어머니이신 성모 마리아께 기도합시다! 모든 그리스도 공동체가 모든 사람에게 열려있고 각 사람에게 관심을 기울이는 가정이 되게 하소서!

Dear brothers and sisters, The month of May has begun: throughout the Church, the joy of gathering in the name of Mary, our Mother, is renewed, especially by praying the Rosary together. We relive the experience of those days between Jesus’ Ascension and Pentecost, when the disciples gathered in the upper room to invoke the Holy Spirit. Mary Most Holy remained in their midst, her heart keeping watch over the fire that animated the prayer of all. I entrust my intentions to you, particularly for communion within the Church and for peace in the world.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 5월이 시작되었습니다. 교회 전체에서 우리의 어머니, 성모 마리아의 이름으로 함께 모이는 기쁨이, 특별히 묵주기도를 함께 바치면서 모이는 기쁨이 새로워집니다. 우리는 제자들이 성령을 청하기 위해 다락방에 모였던 때, 즉 예수님의 승천과 성령강림대축일 사이의 그 날들을 다시 체험합니다. 지극히 거룩하신 성모 마리아께서는 그들 가운데 계셨으며, 모든 이들의 기도를 활성화 시킨 불꽃을 지켜보고 계셨습니다. 저는 제 모든 지향을, 특별히 교회 안의 친교와 세상의 평화를 위한 지향을 성모님께 의탁합니다.

Today marks World Press Freedom Day, promoted by UNESCO.  Unfortunately, this right is often violated — sometimes blatantly, sometimes in more subtle ways.  Let us remember the many journalists and reporters who have fallen victim to wars and violence.

오늘은 유네스코가 제정한 세계 언론 자유의 날입니다. 안타깝게도 이 권리는 침해되는데, 때로는 노골적으로, 때로는 은밀한 방식으로 침해당합니다. 전쟁과 폭력의 희생양이 된 수많은 언론인들을 기억합시다.
