(English Translation) A Swallow Family By Jung Ha-sun Under the thatched eaves on a rainy day, in the swallow's nest,With chittering sound, young swallows stretch open their yellow beaks,And the rain-soaked mother swallow feeds them a caught bug. On the clothesline under the thatched eaves in the falling rain,Sheltering from the rain, the mother swallow nods off for a moment,Then suddenly remembering her chicks, she dives back into the rain. Gazing at the rainy yard, the human mother hesitates for a moment,Then silently puts on a crumpled plastic raincoat,And resolute, pushes her food cart out into the storm. English Translation of the Commentary and Review [Commentary] Based on the traditional three-verse structure of Sijo (a Korean poetic form), this poem juxtaposes the self-sacrificing maternal devotion of a mother swallow feeding her chicks on a rainy day with that of a human mother pushing a street food cart out into the rain for her children. First Verse (Cho-jang): Captures the devoted maternal love of a mother swallow feeding her chicks on a rainy day. The imagery of the yellow-beaked chicks and the rain-soaked mother swallow is vividly portrayed both visually and auditorily with the sound of chittering ("쩍 쩍 쩍"). Second Verse (Jung-jang): Depicts the mother swallow's touching routine—resting briefly on a clothesline from fatigue, only to immediately dive back into the heavy rain as soon as she thinks of her hungry chicks. Third Verse (Jong-jang): The scene expands from the swallow family to a human mother. Gazing at the gloomy rain-soaked yard, she hesitates, then silently puts on a crumpled plastic raincoat and pushes her food cart into the storm for her children. Through this image, the swallow's maternal instinct and the noble love of a human mother converge into a single deeply moving emotion. [Review] This Sijo excels in its natural progression and thematic expansion from the lives of humble creatures to the lives of human parents.Rather than remaining a simple observation of a swallow's behavior, the poem maximizes its poetic resonance by introducing the grounded, poignant imagery of a human mother pushing her street cart to earn a living in the rain, wearing a "crumpled plastic raincoat." As the wet wings of the mother swallow overlap with the mother's worn raincoat, the poem movingly illuminates the universal nature of maternal self-sacrifice and the noble willpower born from a life of hard work and hardship.
