Flail Threshing

by Jung Ha-sun

Spread whole bundles of beans full across the yard,

Threshing with flails in mutual aid with the neighbor.

Facing each other, we give, take, and strike down with joy.

Keeping a proper distance, stepping forward and stepping back,

Breathing out heavy huffs of strength into the empty air,

What a refreshing sensation to lift high and strike down.

Striking the inner side, gathering and hitting the edges,

Taking a bowl of rice wine after a round of heavy striking,

The bean seeds glisten in the sunlight like smiling eyes.

How to live—moving forward, and sometimes stepping back,

Even without military tactics, truth is both shallow and deep,

A collection of maxims taught by the popping bean seeds.

English Translation (Commentary & Criticism)

1. Joyful Sublimation and Rhythm of Communal Labor

Using "flail threshing"—a traditional rural harvesting activity—as its subject, this sijo sensorially portrays the dynamism and pleasure inherent in physical labor. Couplets and rhythmic diction such as "give, take, and strike down" and "stepping forward and stepping back" vividly recreate the organic movement of two people swinging flails in perfect unison. It demonstrates a moment where sweaty toil ceases to be mere hardship, transforming through pum-asi (mutual labor exchange) with a neighbor into an exhilarating interplay and a bond of community.

2. Wisdom of Life Discovered in the Concrete Field of Everyday Existence

In the final stanza, the poet draws an exquisite life lesson from the simple agricultural task of threshing. The back-and-forth movement of flail threshing—advancing and occasionally retreating—symbolizes the essential balance of life, accessible even without formal military strategy. By perceiving each bean popping out on the threshing floor as a "maxim" filled with insight, the poet reminds us that true truth resides not in grandiose philosophy, but within the humble daily work of life.

French Translation (Commentaire et Critique)
