POPE LEO XIV, REGINA CAELI, 6th Sunday of Easter, St Peter's Square. 10 May 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! In today’s Gospel, we hear some of the words Jesus addressed to his disciples during the Last Supper. As he turns the bread and wine into a living expression‎ of his love, Christ says: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (Jn 14:15). This statement frees us from the misconception that we are loved because we keep the commandments, as if our righteousness were a prerequisite for God’s love. On the contrary, God’s love is the basis for our righteousness. We truly keep the commandments according to God’s will when we recognize his love for us, just as Christ revealed it to the world. Jesus’ words are therefore an invitation to enter into a relationship, not a blackmail or a suspicious ultimatum.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다. 오늘 복음에서 우리는 예수님께서 최후의 만찬 중에 제자들에게 하신 말씀을 듣습니다. 예수님께서는 빵과 포도주를 당신 사랑의 살아있는 표징으로 바꾸시며 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “너희가 나를 사랑하면 내 계명을 지킬 것이다.” (요한복음 14,15) 이 말씀은 우리가 계명을 지켜야 사랑받는다는 오해, 즉 우리의 의로움이 하느님의 사랑을 받는 조건이라는 생각에서 우리를 해방시킵니다. 오히려 하느님의 사랑이 우리의 의로움의 조건입니다. 우리가 우리에 대한 하느님의 사랑을 깨달을 때 우리는 하느님의 뜻대로 계명을 지킵니다. 예수님께서 그분의 사랑을 세상에 드러내신 것과 같습니다. 그러므로 예수님의 말씀은 협박이나 의심스러운 최후통첩이 아니라, 하느님과의 관계 안으로 들어가라는 초대입니다.

This is why the Lord commands us to love one another as he has loved us (cf. Jn 13:34): it is Jesus’ love that begets love within us. Christ himself is the standard, the measure of true love: the love that is faithful forever, pure and unconditional. The love that knows no “buts” or “maybes;” the love that gives of itself without seeking to possess; the love that gives life without taking anything in return. Because God loved us first, we too can love, and when we truly love God, we truly love one another. It is like life itself: just as only those who have received life can live, so too, only those who have been loved can love. The Lord’s commandments are therefore a way of life that heal us from false loves. They are a spiritual lifestyle that is a path towards salvation.

이것이 바로 주님께서 당신이 우리를 사랑하신 것처럼 서로 사랑하라고 명하시는 이유입니다.  (요한복음 13,34 참조) 예수님의 사랑이 우리 안에 사랑을 낳습니다. 그리스도 자신이 참 사랑의 기준이시며 척도이십니다. 그 사랑은 영원히 충실하고 순수하며 무조건적입니다. 그 사랑은 또한 "하지만" 또는 "어쩌면"을 모르고, 소유하려 하지 않고 자신을 내어주고, 아무것도 바라지 않고 생명을 주는 사랑입니다. 하느님께서 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨기에 우리도 사랑할 수 있고, 우리가 진정으로 하느님을 사랑할 때 우리는 진정으로 서로를 사랑합니다. 이는 생명과 똑같습니다. 생명을 받은 이만이 살 수 있듯이, 사랑받은 이만이 사랑할 수 있습니다. 그러므로 주님의 계명은 우리를 거짓 사랑에서 치유하는 삶의 방식이며 영적인 생활 방식이고 구원의 길입니다.

It is precisely because he loves us that the Lord does not leave us alone in life’s trials; he promises us the Paraclete, that is, the Advocate, the “Spirit of truth” (Jn 14:17). This gift is one that “the world cannot receive” (ibid.), as long as it persists in evil, oppressing the poor, excluding the weak and killing the innocent. Those who respond to Jesus’ love for all, on the other hand, will find in the Holy Spirit an ally who will never fail: “You know him,” says Jesus, “for he dwells with you, and will be in you” (ibid.). We can therefore bear witness to God, who is love, always and everywhere. Love is not an idea of the human mind, but the reality of divine life, through which all things were created out of nothing and redeemed from death.

주님께서 우리를 사랑하시기 때문에 삶의 시련 속에 우리를 홀로 두지 않으십니다. 그분께서는 우리에게 보호자 (파라크리트, Paraclete) 즉 변호자인 “진리의 영” (요한복음 14,17)을 약속하십니다. 이 선물은 세상이 가난한 이를 억압하고, 약한 이를 배척하고, 무고한 이의 목숨을 빼앗는 악을 계속 자행하는 한 “세상이 받을 수 없는” (요한복음 14,17) 선물입니다. 그러나 모든 사람에 대한 예수님의 사랑에 응답하는 사람들은 성령님 안에서 결코 실패하지 않을 동맹을 발견할 것입니다. “너희는 그분을 알고 있다. 그분께서 너희와 함께 머무르시고 너희 안에 계시기 때문이다,” (요한복음 14,17) 라고 예수님께서 말씀하신 분이십니다. 그러므로 우리는 언제 어디서나 사랑이신 하느님을 증거 할 수 있습니다. 사랑은 인간의 이성이 만들어낸 관념이 아니라, 하느님의 생명의 실체이며, 그를 통해서 모든 만물이 무에서 창조되었고, 죽음에서 구원되었습니다.

By offering us true and eternal love, Jesus shares with us his identity as the beloved Son: “I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you” (v. 20). This all-encompassing communion of life refutes the Accuser — the Paraclete’s adversary, the spirit opposed to our defender. In fact, while the Holy Spirit is the power of truth, the Accuser is the “father of lies” (Jn 8:44), who seeks to set humanity against God and people against one another: the very opposite of what Jesus does by saving us from evil and uniting us as a people of brothers and sisters in the Church.

우리에게 참되고 영원한 사랑을 베푸심으로써, 예수님께서 사랑받는 아들이라는 당신의 정체성을 우리와 나누십니다. “내가 아버지 안에 있고 또 너희가 내 안에 있으며 내가 너희 안에 있다.” (20) 이처럼 모든 것을 아우르는 생명의 친교는 고발자, 즉 보호자의 적, 우리의 변호인이신 성령님을 대척하는 영을 물리칩니다. 사실, 성령님은 진리의 힘인 반면, 고발자는 “거짓의 아비” (요한복음 8,44) 로서, 인간을 하느님과 대립하게 하고, 사람들을 서로에게서 갈라놓으려고 합니다. 이는 예수님께서 우리를 악에서 구원하시고 교회 안에서 형제자매로서 하나 되게 하시는 것과 정반대되는 행위입니다.

Dear friends, filled with gratitude for this gift, let us entrust ourselves to the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Divine Love.

I offer the assurance of my heartfelt prayers for the victims and my spiritual closeness to all those who are suffering as a result of the tragic events. I fervently hope that every form of violence may cease, and I encourage all efforts aimed at fostering peace and development in that beloved land.

Each year, on 10 May, we celebrate the “Day of Coptic-Catholic Friendship”. I extend my fraternal greetings to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and assure the entire beloved Coptic Church of my remembrance in prayer. It is my hope that our journey of friendship will lead us to perfect unity in Christ, who has called us “friends” (cf. Jn 15:15).
