ESL Teacher
Dear friends,
It"s been a long time for me to write about my life here.
It has passed five five months and ten days since we arrived here in America.
I finished two courses successfully and my sons finished their semester with all As.
I was so worried about my two sons. My first son entered 9th grade without any delay, although he had just finished the second grade of middle school in Korea. Usually Korean students enter the one year lower grade here due to their low English level. My son had never taken any private lessons or been to the private academy called "Hakwon" there. I just took him to my summer course for the college students for two months because I planned to study abroad with my sons.
When I first met the advisor here in his Junior High School, I said that my son had to enter the 8th grade. However, the advisor said that he needed not lower his grade because he finished the second grade of middle school there. He added that my son could keep up with his peers soon. He promised me that my son would repeat the same grade if he could not follow his peers.
I was so surprised to see his thick textbooks and the contents of them. They looked far beyond the levels of those of college students. Science, Algebra, Civics, Physical Education, Computer, etc.
Every day teachers gave him some project and assignment. I was also very busy due to my study. I had little time to help him because I had a night class.
In addition, if I was free, I had to help his brother, who is in 3rd grade in elementary school.
He never hurried to achieve in a short period. Instead he patiently did his best within his performance like a bear. He never got angry at me. I could imagine he much stress he felt, but I was also busy not to fail my courses.
In the meantime, he has been got accustomed to his school life and in the final test, he got the best grade; in the highest math class, Algebra, he got 98.9 and in Computer he got 100. 7(7 points are bonus). In Civics, he got A.
Among them, the A in Civics made me happest because he changed C into A.
In fact, he needed not take a Civics test because he was under the ESL program. But he did not know the fact. On the test day, the Civics teacher let him know the fact, but he said he would take the test. He studied Civics very hard. He took the test with American students in the same classroom. The test consisted of 100 questions. He answered almost all the questions. So the Civics teacher changed his grade with red ball pen from 2.00 to 4.00.
How proud I felt of him!!
He also posts his papers, project, notes, etc on our cafe for the students in his age. Now he seems to understand why his mom has helped others during the time in our cafe. He sometimes helps others in E&A, although his English is not so good as to help others.
It is said that the parents who boast of their children are among stupid people. I know, but I want to because he did his best.
hi hera, what a proud son you have... I know how you feel now because I had a similar feeling before. Many Korean students study very hard and finally beat native American in school years eventhough they come to US late. Again, congratulation and best wishes for both you and your son.
첫댓글 Applaud to you and your son.. Hmm.. A in Civics.. must be hard work for a non-native student.. Give him heck of allowance.. hahaha..

I can see the smile on your face . .
Excellent works, you and your sons!
Congratulations! My second daughter will join the 11th grade at an international school coming September.
