스테판 커리는 워리어스와 앞으로 두시즌의 계약이 남아있으며, 그는 단 한번도 워리어스에 오랫동안 프렌차이즈 스타로 남고 싶다는 말을 꺼내지 않았다. 아마도 이것이 어떠한 숨은 뜻이 있다라기보다는 단지 과시적으로 말하는 것일 수도 있겠지만, 사실 얼마전에, 커리는 그가 다음 두시즌 이후에 FA가 되기를 고대하고 있다는 것을 넌지시 알려주기도 했다.

2016년에 재계약 협상을 하는 대신, 만약 2017년이후 계약이 끝날때까지 기다린다면, 그가 FA가 됬을때, 워리어스와 MAX 샐러리로 재계약을 할 수도 있다, 필자는 만약 그가 2016년에 재계약을 하지 않는다면 노심초사하게 될 것이다, 그리고 만약 그가 2016년에 재계약을 하지 않는다면, 모든건 CBA룰에 따라 예상된 절차의 수순으로 가게 될 것이다.

워리어스팬들은 그의 홈타운 샬럿과의 커낵션, 그의 아버지가 샬럿 호네츠 TV 해설가인점, 마이클 조던의 영향..그것들로 인해서 그가 워리어스를 떠나게 될 걱정을 떨쳐버릴수 없을 것이다. 또한 2012년후반에 워리어스와 계약했던 말도 않되는 값싼 계약을 그가 어떻게 느꼈을런지, 물론 워리어스가 강해지기 이전이며, 커리가 강력한 MVP 후보가 되기 이전이며, 그의 고질적인 발목 부상에 대해서 의심을 하고 있던 시기였기도 하지만 그것도 하나의 요인이 될수 있겠다.

그렇다, 커리는 현재 이번시즌 $10.63M 을 받고 있으며 워리어스안에서 4번째 고연봉선수이다. (데이빗 리, 앤드류 보것 그리고 안드레 이궈달라 다음으로)

그리고 다음 시즌 클레이 탐슨의 새로운 딜이 시작하게 되면 ($15.5M) 커리는 팀에서 5번째 고연봉 선수($11.37M)가 된다, 

심지어는 드레이몬드 그린이 RFA가 됬을때 얼마를 받는냐에 따라서 또 달라질 수도 있다. (만약 워리어스가 그린을 잡는다면, 확실히 워리어스는 그를 잡기로 결정한 듯하다.) 커리는 아마 6번째 고연봉 선수가 될수 있다. 필자는 그린의 예상 샐러리가 $11.37M 보다 높을진 모르겠지만, 만약 다른 팀에서 Monster short-term deal을 오퍼를 하여 워리어스가 매치하게 된다면 가능한일이다.

앞으로 지금부터 내년 2017년까지 어떤일이 일어날지는 아무도 모른다, 강팀들이 생각보다 짧은 시간안에 추락할수도 있을것이고, 지금 현재 팀에 만족하고 있는 슈퍼스타가 향후 2-3년동안 팀에 만족하리라는 보장은 없다.

그러나, 우리가 알고 있듯이, 현재 커리의 스티브 커 새 코칭 시스템의 빠른 적응력을 봤을때, 2017년 있을 커리와의 대형 계약이 큰위기를 줄 것 같지 않다.

아마도 만약 마크 잭슨과 가까웠던 커리가, 스티브 커의 코치진들이나 구단주 조 레이콥의 오너쉽을 불편하게 생각했다면 가능할수도 있지만, 그동안의 모든 친절한 설명을 바탕으로, 그는 전혀 문제 없어보인다.

만약, 커리가 팀 동료들과 관계가 좋지가 못하다면, 그러나 클레이탐슨, 이궈달라, 그린, 보것, 리등의 선수들보다 커리를 위한 완벽한 그룹을 찾긴 힘들 것이다.

만약, 커리가 워리어스에게 위닝팀의 가능성을 보지 못했다면.. 그러나 그들은 현재 서부리그에서 최고의 성적을 가지고 있으며, 아마도 코어그룹들이 젊기때문에 향후 1-2년동안에는 좋은 성적을 유지할수 있을 것이다.

만약, 커리가 Bay Area (북가주)에서 사는것이 불편한다면...그러나 흠.. 커리와 커리의 와이프 Ayesha는 여기서 사는 것을 넘 좋아하고 팬들이 원할때까지 여기서 오랫동안 살고 싶다고 답하였다.

다시 말해서, 우리는 앞으로 향후 몇년동안 그리고 앞으로 플레이오프시즌에 어떤일이 일어날지 아무도 모른다. 르브론 제임스는 예상하지 못했던 시기에서 팀을 두번이나 바꿨다. 그러나 필자는 커리가 롱텀으로 워리어스에 남게 될수 밖에 없는 상황들을 설명해 줄수 있다.

* 워리어스는 열광적인 팬들을 베이스로 한 위닝 팀이다.

* 코치의 오펜시브 시스템이 커리와 퍼펙트하게 잘 맞는다.

* 커리의 리더쉽으로 인해 라커룸분위기를 형성하였다.

* 매니지먼트 그룹은 그의 주위에 엄청난 재능의 선수들을 끌어모았다. 

특히 클레이 탐슨을 지난 오프시즌에 트레이드를 하지 않고 재계약을 하였다. 또한 워리어스 매니지먼트는 이번 여름에 드레이몬드 그린도 팀의 미래를 위해서 잡는게 나을 꺼라는 것을 알고 있다, 특히 몇주전 Seattle-Carolina (NFL game) 경기중 씨에틀 경기장에서 Seattle 팬들이 심한말을 커리와 커리 가족들에게 하자 그들을 위해서 방어를 하였던 그린이 아닌가? (포도알 3개를 팬들을 향해서 집어던졌다.) 그리고 셀수 없이 많은 이유로, 워리어스 매니지먼트는 그린을 보낼 수 없다, 그리고 내가 몇번이고 말하지만, 필자는 워리어스가 그를 잡기 위해서 어떤 오퍼든 다 매치하리라 확신한다.

또한, 일반적으로 워리어스 팬들은 샬럿이 그의 고향이고 다시 그가 샬럿으로 돌아갈지도 모른다고 생각한다.

필자의 생각에는, 샬럿의 그가 자랐던 그의 고향중 하나며, 커리와 커리의 아내 Ayesha와 그들의 자녀들은 Bay Area(북가주)가 그들의 또다른 고향이라고 생각할 것이다. 

아래는 참고로 작년에 커리가 필자에게 그의 long-term situation관해서 한얘기다.

"내가 재계약을 했을때, 난 계약을 보류하고 샬럿으로 돌아가겠다는 생각을 한적이 단 한번도 없었다. Bay area(북가주), 새로운 고향에서 새로운것들을 보며 뿌리를 내리는것도 나에게 정말 좋다고 생각한다. 난 단지 내 집같이 편안한 곳에서 머물고 싶을 뿐이다."

Stephen Curry is signed for this season plus two more seasons and has never given the slightest indication that he wants to be anything other than a Warrior for many years.

In fact, not too long ago, Curry let it be known he was counting the days until he was eligible for his next extension from the Warriors–which would be two summers from now, though that perhaps just was him making a symbolic point more than a promise.

(Instead of negotiating an extension in July 2016, when he’s eligible, Curry can make much more in his next deal if he lets his current contract expire in July 2017, hits free agency, then re-signs with the Warriors at a max salary. I expect gnashing and fretting when and if he doesn’t sign a new extension in July 2016, but if he doesn’t, the timing aspect will be predicated mostly by CBA rules, I believe.)

That doesn’t stop Warriors fans from fretting about his connection to his hometown of Charlotte, about his father Dell’s presence as a Hornets TV analyst, about Michael Jordan’s influence…

Or about Curry’s thoughts about the massively team-friendly extension deal he signed in late-October 2012, before the Warriors got very good, before he turned into a top MVP candidate, and when there were still questions about the durability of his ankles.

Yes, Curry is currently the fourth-highest-paid Warrior, at $10.63M this season. (Behind David Lee, Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala.)

And next season, when Curry makes $11.37M, he’ll be the fifth-highest, because that’s when Klay Thompson’s mega-deal will start, with an estimated $15.5M salary.

Curry might even be the sixth-highest-paid Warrior next season, depending on what Draymond Green gets in restricted free agency (and if the Warriors keep him, which they are certainly determined to do)–I don’t know that Green will get a starting salary higher than $11.37M, but it is possible if somebody else offers him a monster short-term deal and the Warriors have to match.

You do never know what will happen between now and the summer of 2017–even the best teams have blown up in far less time than that and there is no guarantee that a superstar who is happy now will be happy two or three years from now…

However… just going by what we currently know, and Curry’s fast adaptation to Steve Kerr’s coaching system… it’s impossible to say that there will be an intense Curry Free Agent Crisis in 2017.

Maybe if Curry, who remains close to Mark Jackson, was uncomfortable this season with Kerr’s staff or with Joe Lacob’s ownership… but from all vantage points, Curry is as comfortable as can be.

Maybe if Curry didn’t like his teammates… but you can’t draw up a better, more fitting group for Curry than Klay Thompson, Iguodala, Green, Bogut, Lee and the others.

Maybe if Curry didn’t see the Warriors winning into the future… but they’re the No. 1 team in the West, they’re probably a year or two ahead of their internal schedule, and the core of this team is still very young (including Curry, who is 26).

And especially, maybe if Curry and his family weren’t comfortable in the Bay Area… but… well…

Read Ann Killion’s excellent profile of Curry and his wife. Which ends with this quote from Ayesha Curry…

“We love it here. We’re staying for as long as you guys want us.”

Again, that’s not contractually binding and you do never know what will happen over the span of years and playoff seasons. LeBron James has changed teams twice when it was not quite expected either time until the very end.

But I think if you had to draw up a situation that suited Curry’s long-term feelings, you’d have…

-A winning Warriors team with a large and passionate fan base;

-A coach who connects with Curry on many levels, and who runs an offensive system that fits him perfectly;

-A locker room built around Curry’s leadership;

-A management group that has put tremendous talent around him… and specifically kept Thompson last summer when it could’ve traded him. (And GSW ownership knows it had better keep Draymond Green this summer. Who was it who defended Curry and his family at that Seattle-Carolina game a few weeks ago? Yep, Draymond Green. For that and countless other reasons, Warriors management can’t let Green go. And as I’ve said repeatedly: I’m sure they will match any offer and will keep him.)

More generally, the sense I get from  worried Warriors fans is that they think Charlotte is his home and that he might be destined to return.

My point: I think Charlotte is one of his homes, and it’s where he grew up. But the Currys–Steph and Ayesha and their growing family–now feel like the Bay Area is their home base.

I don’t see how that would change in the middle of this new push towards a deep playoff run.

This is what Curry told me about his long-term situation a year ago…

When I signed my extension, I never thought about holding out so I could get back to Charlotte.

I just think branching out and kind of seeing different parts of what was out there and being in the Bay Area and establishing a new home, that was a good prospect for me.

I wanted to be in a spot where I feel at home.

지금까지의 상황을 봤을때는 남아 있을 확률이 클것 같아요, 팀도 잘하고 있고 본인이 원했던 마크잭슨 감독은 나갔지만, 구단주나 매니지먼트에게 작년오프시즌 클레이탐슨 트레이드 하지말라고 강력하게 요구하기도 하였고 결국 클레이는 남게 되었죠. 또한 최근에는 클레이와 오랫동안 같은 팀에서 뛰고 싶다고 얘기했으니. 워리어스에 오랫동안 남아 있을 가능성이 큽니다.

여기 가까운기자들이 얘기하는것도 글쿠 구단주가 얼마전에 인터뷰한 것도 글쿠 돌아가는 분위기가 아무도 트레이드 안하고 갈꺼같아요, 지금 이기나 이대리가 가치가 높지 않기때문에 1라운드 픽을 같이 주고 내보낼 가능성이 있는데 구단주는 그걸 원하지 않구요, 어짜피 사치세를 내년에 낸다고 본인입으로 얘기를 했기때문에 사치세내고 내년 시즌 넘길 가능성이 많아요, 골스가 지금까지 단한번도 사치세를 낸적이 없다고 하는데 내년 시즌에 처음내니 리핏터 패널티도 (Repeater Penalties) 내지 않기때문에 내년 바짝 고생하게 될것같네요.

어짜피 후년에는 새로운 TV딜때문에 샐러리 캡이 엄청 올라가고 데이빗리도 만기계약이라 내년이면 끝나구요..후년부터는 사치세 걱정안할 것같다고 하네요. 이기가 계약이 끝날때쯤에는 샐러리캡은 더 올라가고..
