English Translation (영어 번역) Literary Commentary on "Dance" (춤) "Dance" is a modern Sijo in a two-stanza structure (2 Jang / 6 lines) that sublimates the poignant moment of parting between a tree stem and its leaf on an autumn day into a quiet, sorrowful dance. It beautifully personifies a natural phenomenon as a human farewell, leaving a deep and lasting resonance.First Stanza: The Sorrow Just Before Parting and the Sound of Haegeum"How bitterly we wept, holding each other last night— / The final night before the stem and leaf must part.“ This captures the intimate embrace and tears shared between the stem and the leaf right before falling. Facing their imminent fate of separation in the dark of night, the vivid description of pouring out their pent-up emotions is deeply moving."From afar, someone plays the trembling melody of a haegeum.“ The sound of the haegeum drifting through the night of departure acoustically manifests the trembling hearts of the leaf and the stem. The distinctively mournful and vibrating tone of the instrument maximizes the sense of grief and the trembling of a leaf about to drop.Second Stanza: Acceptance of Separation and the "Inner Sob" That Becomes a Dance "Is it not the way of the world that meetings end in parting? / Let us say goodbye pretending there is neither pain nor sorrow."This reflects a calm acceptance of the natural law of impermanence (Meet to Part). Rather than openly displaying grief, the quiet resolve to pretend everything is fine out of consideration for one another shows deep maturity and restraint. "The swallowed tears inside have now become the movements of those sending and leaving."This is the highlight of the poem and reveals the true meaning of the title, "Dance". The falling leaf floating in the wind and the swaying of the remaining branch appear on the surface as an elegant movement (a dance), but in truth, it is an "inner sob"—a sorrow expressed through the entire body when tears cannot be voiced out loud. It artistically completes the moment where swallowed tears finally transform into a sublime dance. 2.
