A Buddha-Emanated Parrot Inspires Amitabha-Recitation

(부처님께서 앵무새로 화신을 나투셔 아미타불 염불을 이끄시다)

The ancient Parthian Empire was a remote,
desolate place. Its people knew nothing of
Buddhism. They slaughtered animals, sang,
drank and amused themselves. They were
extremely ignorant and foolish.

고대 파르티아 제국은 저 멀리 떨어진 황량한 곳 입니다.
그곳 사람들은 불교에 대해서 전혀 아는 것이 없고,
동물을 도살하고, 노래하고, 술마시며 즐거워 하며 지냈는데,
무척이나 어리석고 무지했습니다.

One day, a parrot flew over and settled atop a neighbor's house. Its feathers were golden-hued,
mixed with blue-green and white. It dazzled passers-by and attracted their attention.

하루는, 앵무새가 날아와서 민가 위에 둥지를 틀었습니다. 깃털은 황금색에, 파랗고 녹색에 흰색이 섞여있었으며,
찬란하게 빛이 나 지나가는 사람들의 눈길을 끌었어요.

"Oh my!" exclaimed one. "There are such parrots in the world." The onlookers heard the bird speak
the Parthian language and started to have animated conversations with it.
우와! 사람들이 감탄하고 "세상에 저렇게 아름다운 앵무새가 있구나!" 구경꾼들은 새가 파르티아 말을 하는 걸 들었고, 앵무새와 생동감 있게 대화를 하기 시작했어요.

Someone held up coarse grains to feed the parrot. But it flapped its wings and flew away, saying:
"You recite 'Namo Amitabha Buddha.' That's my food!"
누군가가 사료용 곡물-모이를 앵무새에게 주자,  앵무새가 날개를 치며 날아가며 말하길
"여러분 '나무아미타불' 이라고 외우세요. 그게 제 음식입니다!"

Everyone chanted "Namo Amitabha Buddha" with abandon. Each recitation of the Buddha's name
resembled a multicolored cloud, lifting up and lowering the parrot. It became more full-bodied,
and its golden feathers grew more & more brilliant.

모두가 마음껏 "나무아미타불" 을 염하였는데, 각각 염한 부처님의 명호가 오색 구름이 되어서 앵무새를 떠받치고 모셔 올렸습니다. 앵무새는 점점 더 커지고, 그 황금빛 깃털을 더더욱 자라고 빛났어요.

Suddenly the bird flapped its wings, pointed westward and said: "There's a land of abundance, with
lotus flowers, ponds and tall trees everywhere. Do you want to go see it?"

갑자기 새가 날갯짓을 하고, 서쪽을 가리키며 말하길, "저기에 풍요로운 땅이 있는데, 연꽃이 가득하고, 연못과 커다란 나무가 가득해요. 여러분 가서 보고싶지 않아요?"

The assembled people chanted Amitabha's name joyfully and sat on the parrot's back. They rose
into the sky, soaring higher and higher, until they entered the clouds. In a beam of golden light,
they disappeared over the western horizon.

모여있는 사람들은 아미타불의 명호를 기쁘게 염송하면서, 앵무새의 등뒤에 올라타 앉았어요. 
그들은 하늘로 떠올라서 구름에 닿을 때 까지 더 높이 높이 날아올랐어요.
황금빛 빛줄기 속에서 그들은 서쪽 지평선 너머로 사라졌습니다.

The King knew that the parrot was an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. Amazed by the
unfathomable merit of the episode, he built a temple at the location. He taught the Dharma every
day and urged people to recite the name of Amitabha Buddha. As a result, many of his subjects
were reborn in the Land of Bliss.

나중에 왕은 앵무새는 아미타부처님이 화신을 나투신 것을 알아차렸고, 이 일의 크나큰 공덕에 놀랐습니다.
왕은 그 자리에 절을 세우고, 부처님법을 매일 가르치고 사람들에게 아미타부처님의 이름을 염하도록 가르쳤습니다. 그리하여 수많은 그 나라 사람들이 기쁨이 가득한 국토-정토에 왕생하게 되었어요.
