Summary:
Paul laments that not all Israelites accepted the gospel, despite the beautiful message being proclaimed. He quotes Isaiah, who said, “Lord, who has believed our report?” showing that unbelief was foreseen. Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Paul affirms that Israel did hear, as the message went out to all the earth. Yet Israel remained disobedient and obstinate, even though God continually reached out to them. In contrast, Gentiles who didn’t seek God have found Him, showing God's grace extends beyond Israel.
Teaching:
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
The beginning of faith is listening to the Word. But Israel did not listen to the words spoken by the prophets. Even now, those without faith do not truly listen to the Word — they may come to the church building, but their hearts and thoughts are elsewhere. One believes in the heart, confesses with the mouth, and gains faith through hearing. That’s why a person’s attitude toward the Word reveals their faith.
“I was found by those who did not seek Me, I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me.”
No one has seen God, but when we hear, read, and encounter the gospel, God reveals Himself. This is possible through righteousness that comes from faith.
Only by faith are we declared righteous; salvation comes through obedient faith that responds to the word of Christ.
