Summary:
Paul declares that God has not rejected His people, Israel. As proof, Paul points to himself as an Israelite who believes in Christ. He references Elijah’s time, when God preserved a faithful remnant, even when most of Israel had turned away. Similarly, at the present time, a remnant of Israel remains, chosen by God’s grace—not by works, because grace and works are mutually exclusive.
Teaching:
“I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal. In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice.”
It’s not because the seven thousand were exceptional or did something well that they were kept, but because God chose them by His grace. The great figures of the Bible—Noah, Abraham, Moses—were all chosen by God’s grace.
In the same way, we are in the church because God chose us. Therefore, God does not abandon His chosen people. That’s why we can endure in faith to the end—because God has chosen us and will not let us perish.
So if we understand that it is all by God’s grace, we must respond with gratitude, and our actions should follow. Since we were chosen not by works but by grace, now we must live faithfully through our actions.
