Thank you very much everyone for your enthusiasm and especially iggytime for your organizing efforts. I have a few things to bring under your consideration. I would like to ask you to discuss them and make some decisions at the coming meeting so we can establish good basic guideline.
1. Meeting format
I will write up a basic guideline for the meeting format along the line suggested by Merry (message #30) as well as by iggytime (message #26) and put it on top as a general notice for this board. So please discuss this and tell us if you see something that needs to be changed or added. And of course make sure that someone summarizes this and posts it on this board.
2. Meeting date
There are people who are occupied on Sundays and cannot make it then, so how about alternating Saturdays and Sundays? In other words, if we meet on a Sunday this month, we meet on a Saturday next month.
3. Native speakers
Everybody seemed to have appreciated having Oday in the meeting. It is surely great to have someone who can provide reliable advice on our English. Since he is there more as a helper, I think it might be a good idea to give him some substantial token of gratitude (money). Then, in case Oday should be unable to attend the meeting, this incentive will enable us to bring other native speakers to the meeting. If you are willing to pay a bit for the quality of the meeting, please discuss this and decide how much would be appropriate as each person's contribution.
4. Reflections
I would like to emphasize the importance of each person's reflection after the meeting. This will really help improve the quality of the meeting for next time. Especially helpful will be what the topics discussed were and which ones you liked most. This will help other people prepare good topics for next meetings. Shall we make the reflection an obligation for participating in the meeting?
None of these is meant to be obligatory. I would be perfectly happy even if nobody liked my idea. But I do hope you give it some thought. That's it for now, and have a great meeting! ^^
첫댓글 I'm not sure whether Oday needs that kind of "token of gratitude". Our meeting could be a good chance for him to make some nice Korean friends, and that's why I brought him here. I think in a way Koreans are spoiling foreigners to be too money-conscious! What do you think, other members?
Thanks for giving us an opportunity to have Oday. We'll leave this matter up to you. Let us know when we need to express gratitude in other way.We are always ready for it.^^
Firstly, I agree on 한석규 and also agree on Merry, about token issue. Secondly, I really like Jin's proposal for alternating meeting date. For example, I prefer Saturday evening. And somebody might have to come and go from a far place. In this case, Sunday could be burden.
Thank you for your opinions. This is not really about Oday but about whether we want to have a native speaker at every meeting. If he can come to every meeting, that's great, problem solved. But I don't think it's fair to expect that. If he cannot come, do you think we will be able to find another native speaker who can come purely out of friendship? I doubt it. But the incentive will make it easier to bring one. So it is really up to what everyone wants to get out of the meeting. It is up to Oday whether he accepts or declines our offer, but we still need to decide this as our general policy.
Anyway, this is just a suggestion, and it is totally up to everyone whether or not to accept it.
Oday promised me that whenever I attend the meeting he'll be there, too. He has a one-year contract with my school until next February. And it's likely that the contract will be extended. ^^
Wow! It's a good news. I can buy him a beer, as a token. And you too Mr. Han ^^
Thanks for the offer! To be sorry, he doesn't drink any alcohol. He only used to drink coke, but recently he has a problem with his stomach. So he's been abstaining from it. Me? I drink like a fish! ^^
That's great! Thanks, Oday and 한석규! Have a great meeting, guys!
