Section 15 : Chi - Ji (致知,치지/ Attaining Knowledge)... Reaching Enlightenment... Chapter 18.
[Main Exposition]
● Chi - Ji (致知,치지) means knowing that which was previously unknown and awakening to it.
● If you maintain a righteous mind without ceasing even for a moment,
you will come to realize that God(하나님) resides within your mind and awaken
to the presence of the Divine Spirit(신령님) inside you.
● Then, the Divine(神,신/ Shin) connects through mere sound,
and the Spirit(靈,령/Ryeong) perceives through the simple approach of an object.
● Consequently past events and things yet to come will be known as clearly
as seeing a bonfire in the dark of night.
[Classical Text Translation]
Attaining knowledge means perceiving and awakening to what was unknown,
If one rectifies the mind without interruption,
The Divine Mind(心神,심신) governs knowing,
and the Spiritual Mind(心靈,심령) governs awakening.
So that when a sound enters, with the Divine,
and when an object approaches, the Spirit awakens to it.
Thus, the past and the future become as bright and clear as a burning torch
in the present moment.
[Explanation]
The state of Ultimate Clarity
This section explains a spiritual state in which one perceives past events and future
occurrences as clearly as seeing a bonfire in the dark of night.
※ The Contrast : Trance vs. True Rectification.
● Looking at historical examples from all times and places,
those who reached a certain level of foresight often made predictions while immersed
in a state of Chaos(混沌,혼돈/ chaos) ― resembling a trance or ecstatic state.
● However, the capability described in Chi - Ji(致知,치지/ Attaining Knowledge)
requires a state of Jeong - Sim(正心,정심/ Rectified Mind) completely devoid
of any Chaod(混沌,혼돈). Only in this state can dne connect with the Divine(神,신/Shin)
through mere sound and commune with the Spirit(靈,령/ Ryeong) simply
by the approach of an object.
● This distinction is profound ―it is as vast as the dlfference between heaven and earth.
[Key Terms Reference]
● Jeong - Sim(正心,정심) : Rectified Mind/ Righteous Mind
● Chaos(混沌,혼돈) : Here, it refers to turbulent, chaotic, or trance - like mental
state often associated with shamanic or ecstatic prophecies,
contrasted with the calm clarity of Jeong - Sim.
● Difference between heaven abd earth(하늘과 땅의 차이) :
A Korean idiom meaning "a world of difference"or "as different as night and day."
[Explanation( Refined)]
Paragtaph 1 : The State of Ultimate Clarity.
This passage elucidates a profound spiritual state in which one perceives both
past events and future occurrences as vividly and clearly as seeing a bonfire
blaze through the dark of night.
paragraph 2 : Trance - like Prophecy vs. Conscious Rectification.
● Historically and across various cultures,
individuals who achieved a comparable level of foresight often delivered their
prophecies while immersed in a state of Chaos(混沌 혼돈, chaos) ― akin to a
hypnotic trance or ecstatic frenzy.
● Instark contrast, the faculty described in Chi - Ji (致知,치지/ Attaining Knowledge)
can only be realized within a state of Jeong - Sim(正心,정심/ Rectified Mind),
which is completly devoid of any such chaos.
Only under this condition of absolute clarity can one commune with the
Divine(神 신/ Shin) through mere sound and connect with the Spirit(靈 령/ Ryeong)
simply by the approach of an object.
paragraph 3 : Conclusion.
This distinction is monumentel ― it represents a difference as vast as that
between heaven and earth.
