[Lee Won Young's Life without Sleep, New Silk Road for Life and No-Nukes]
I. "Really, what is with the United Nations?"
In August 2009, we, the officials of the Professors against the Canal, suggested the unfair grounds for the Four Rivers Project to the experts who accompanied with Secretary-General of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Achim Steiner and expected UNEP to criticize the project. But what a surprise! They have released a report that the Four Rivers project is the best case of green growth. Of course, the Lee Myeong-bak government immediately promoted it publically. I was shocked! Did not they expect deaths of many living organisms and deadly deterioration of water?
II. In 1979, when a nuclear power plant accident occurred at the Three Miles Island of the United States, the German civic society, which had been aware of the problem well before, launched an opposition movement in earnest. Then again in 1986, a nuclear accident happened in Chernobyl, and Germany, which was 800 kilometers away, suffered tremendous damage. Nevertheless, when the government did not respond, the activists came together. They were mostly educated in the humanities and they went back to school to learn engineering in their middle age.
They wanted to demonstrate that "they will make technologies and products that can produce clean electricity without nuclear power or fossil fuel." One of the fruits of this is the solar power that is leading the global village into a revolutionary state. David Crane, CEO of NRG Energy, the largest electric power company in the United States, already declared the inevitable. "The electricity from the roof is cheaper than the electricity from the power line. This is become true between 2014 and 2016." This is actually happening now. 'Turned environmental activist' Michael Sörenburger cannot convince David Crane.
III. The Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011 is a collosal event. If a same accident repeats three times, it is the world of probability rather than that of coincidence. There is a certain expectation. Three nuclear accidents in 50 years means 60 accidents in a thousand years. 60 accidents! At this rate, there will be no creatures on earth.
We expected that the United Nations would come up with a fundamental measure to prevent such an accident from being repeated again. But for seven years after the Fukushima nuclear accident, there is no news. Ban Ki-moon was disgraced when he hung around with the wrong side. The United Nations is silent, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a subsidiary organization, speaks about nuclear plant safety. But it is an organization originally created for the promotion of nuclear power. Structurally, they cannot provide the fundamental solution.
I don't know when I started to lose sleep. Initially, the UN was created to prevent disasters of nuclear weapons. What about nuclear power plant then? Why doesn’t it fear the nuclear power plants? There are 450 nuclear power plants on earth. One of them can explode due to an earth quake or a terrorist attack anytime and anywhere. Why does it keep silent on this?
This is like having a big hole in the management of the spaceship called ‘Earth’. There are growing suspicions that the mandate of decision-making is one-sided, and the ability of the United Nations which made by the corrupt state power and the money paid by it, have not been adequately equipped.
There is something missing. There is no device that can maintain the system of the life as a whole in the global village. Nuclear power plants themselves are conscience-destructive things that force our descendants to sacrifice themselves. If we see it as it is then it means we are in self-denial. Humanity as whole has committed a serious dereliction of duty. It is hard to say that this is due to the dominance of the nuclear Mafia. There is a structural problem. If the UN is created because of the threat of nuclear weapons, a system corresponding to the threat of nuclear power plant is needed. It is obvious because nuclear power plants are more dangerous. The global village can no longer be left in its current state. We need another way to find a new possibility. Like the middle aged professors in Germany in the 1980s.
The great threat to the spaceship ‘Earth’ is shocking me. Like Hyecho, Buddhist monk, one thousand years ago.
