SO from 2mo, how do you think i should take it? how many times, and how do i take it, with a glass of water? i was thinking once in the morning with a glass of water?
Please reply
Cheers
Jamie!

i'd recommend taking it only on a need-to basis (i.e., important date, meetings, presentations, interviews). take it 2-4 hours before interview. 0.1 mg. if that's not enough, try 0.2 mg. i wouldn't go above that.

I'm inclined to agree with Domadi. I started out taking mine once or twice a day, then gradually went down to when I thought I needed one.. then eventually my prescription ran out and I never re-filled it... not to say there aren't days I wish I had, but hasn't been near the problem that it used to be.
Good luck, Jamieboy.

I take it several times a day, every day. I hope I can one day stop taking it but at the moment I notice a definite increase in sweating if I stop, even for a short time. It does take a bit of trial and error to work out best dosage.

I took robinul 2day for the 1st time, as i was going in to the city and knew id be thinking about the sweating, and getting anxious about it etc etc. I took 1 tablet about 1hr 30 mins before i went out, But i still sweated alot. So how long does it take for it to kick in, and seeing as it only occurs at certain times, when and how many times a day should i take the stuff?
Cheers

Depending on the severity of your HH, the dose of Robinul could be wrong for you. Try two Robinul. It could help. I take 4 mg's a day, 2 at a time. I take one dose in the morning, the other at lunch time.
If you just started taking Robinul, it could take a few days for your body to adjust to the medicine so it starts working.
Keep us posted.

I started out taking Robinul a couple times a day, but got down to where I would only take it when I felt the need.. now I don't take it at all... Don't usually have the need, although there are those days...

jaimeboy,
for me, taking robinul anytime doesnt work. in order for it to work in the morning/afternoon i have to take it as soon as i get up in the morning, and right before my shower. dont know why it works like that, but then i can usually take it at around 2 or 5 depending on when i took the first one and what i have going on that day. your body may be as picky as mine is, or you may just have to fiddle around with a schedule/times and see if it works.
good luck!

Hi everybody,
I've been using avert for 3 days and it really seems to work. It just seems to take a few hours to kick in. I take it at 5.00am in order for it to be kicking in by 9.00am...also, I need to take at least 3mg for it to be effective.
I've heard you can build up a tolerance, taking glycoppyrolate. Is that true ?
Domadi, as a former robinul user, you say that you wouldn't go above 1mg to 2mg each time. Can you tell me why ?
What about crushing up the pills and disolving them in water ? Would this speed up the effects ?
Thanking you all in advance.
Serval.

Hi
I take Avert pretty much every day. It does take a while to kick in. I usually take 2mg at a time. Usually 3 times a day. If I am going to be in a hot or anxious place I will take an extra 2mg, I don't exceed the 8mg per day max. I have been taking it for about 6 months now.
Taking it regularly seems to build up a stronger effect and the time it takes to take effect is less noticeable.

I tried to take as little as possible when I was taking Robinul, that way I didn't build up a tolerance... I haven't taken any in quite awhile now, though....

Hi
I find it is better to take it regularly as it does take a while to take effect. I don't think you become tolerant to it, I don't think it works in that way. I do however need it less now and my body is almost being "trained" not to sweat plus I feel more relaxed now and "forget" to sweat!
Anybody else found that HH gets less with time and practice?

I also somewhat "trained" my body and mind... by using Robinul I had less sweating which made me more relaxed which also decreased the sweating. unlike you, I did this while taking Robinul as minimally as possible. I weaned myself off of it and still had the same effects for awhile.. although, now I'm much more stressed which has made the sweating bad again... at least that's how it seems....

Hi everybody. I'm an AVERT user and I think it works pretty well compared to most anti-HH drugs. I take 4mg at 5.00 am and another 4 at 11.00 am. However it is not perfect. If your HH is caused by nervousness like mine, you may find glycopyrolate is not that good in stressful situations. I feel like giving ZOLOFT a go. They say it works better than PAXIL for anxiety. PAXIL is also believed to have severe side-effects. Also, I read that ROBINUL is better than AVERT when taken with anxiety meds. Which one would be more beneficial ? DITROPAN is also said to work well. some say it works longer due to the extended release. You don't also feel any dry mouth with DITROPAN; which is the case with AVERT or ROBINUL. However,DITROPAN is said to cross the blood-brain barrier contrary to AVERT or ROBINUL.
So what should I choose ? I need both a med that works well for my sweating (I think AVERT which I use is good) and another that can control my nervousness.
Thanks in advance.
Serv@l.

Hi Serval,
I take Robinul Forte (I buy from www.Cyberpharmacy.com with a presc.) which seems to work well...not many side-effects, bit of a headache & dry-mouth. I use to take Ditropan but I found the side-effects far too strong, ie. headaches & a horrible anxious feeling...i thought it was a disgusting feeling being on them. I take Lustral for my anxiety.
Hope this helps

Hello Serval,
FYI, Robinul and Avert both contain the active ingredient glycopyrrolate, so they are essential the same medication.
With regards to choosing an anti-anxiety medication, discuss with your doctor your concerns and keep in mind that if one doesn't work for you, another one might. Sometimes, it takes a few tries to find the best medication for you.

Hi everybody,
I'm a newcomer. Not from the States. I'm French and one out of many; as I've always suffered from HH. This forum is great and I wish I had found it earlier. I myself tried many things. ETS-surgery among others. The result : I'm now sweating much more than I used to !!! especially in the legs; which as you can guess, is a true nightmare ! My experience of AVERT is quite recent : one day !!! (don't smile !!!).
I first tried 1mg but with no results; except for a dry throat. Then I took 2 mg 4 hours later, but it does not seem to work ! just sweating like mad !
Eventually, I took 3 mg 4 hours later and since then, no sweating !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe I should wait a little and see what happens ... I don't want to feel too happy and find out in a few days that it was just a lull. Anyway, it seems to work for me. Have you tried AVERT ? Does it have known long-lasting side-effects ?
Anyone who tried oral treatment with negative effects, please let me know.
Thanks for the information.
Serval.

Hi Serval,
Sometimes it does take a few days for the full effect to occur, so remember to space out your doses out and decrease the dose if you do experience side effects (if any). Since each day is different, you do not necessarily need to take the same dose each day, vary the dosage to your needs. As a reminder, the usual maximum dose is 8mg. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Hi Dipen,
Thanks for your reply. I tried it today, using the same dose in the morning (1mg avert), 5 hours later, around 12; I took a higher dose (2mgs avert); still no results. Actually, I tried another dose last night (3mgs) and the result was quite satisfactory : no sweating at all !!! I tried to decrease the dose (not because I experienced side-effects - actually there were none - just because I felt like trying a smaller dose and see what happened) today, but it seems that my system reacts only to 3mgs. After taking that dose yesterday, I noticed that its effects were still visible late in the morning. Indeed, I began sweating again only at 10 AM today; which seems to indicate that all I need is to take 3mgs twice a day. Theoretically, at least, it should work. Now, It seems that avert-taking is better on an empty stomach. Right ? Should I avoid using vitamin C at the same time ? Last but not least, should I expect loss of efficiency after several months of use ? And should I be afraid of any bad side-effects in the long term ?
Thanks for all.
Serval.

Dear Serval,
Glad to hear that you found the dose that works for you. As far as I am aware of, I don't believe you need to avoid taking Vitamin C at the same time; however; it you want to take it at a different time, go ahead.
Glycopyrrolate, the active ingredient of Avert has been on the market now for about 40 years and is used for a variety of different indications so it has been used for a long period of time. As always, if you have not already done so, you should always inform your doctor of what you are taking.
As far as I am aware of, there have been no published trials on loss of efficacy after several months use. The only way to truly know is to perform double blinded trials. That being said, there are many patients who have used it long term without loss of efficacy.

Hi DMBEIU
Avert can be used effectively for the underarms. We also have a topical wipe, Secure, which can be applied to the underarms or other areas. Patients have found these wipes to be useful if their preference is to not take an oral medication. Please do not hesitate to contact us at pharmacist@pharmacy.ca if you have any further questions. Hello all. Thought this would be helpful to post - people's experiences are always good to read.
Mine are not great but this shouldn't deter others from trying things which might work for them. I found that neither has worked for me, not really what I wanted to happen and I'm finding it pretty disheartening.
First tried 1mg once a day of Avert, then 2mg twice a day (two of the 1mg tablets) - no result, not even the dry eyes or throat.
Moved onto Ditropan and was taking 3 of those a day, but again no result, not even the side-effects.
By God I must be resistant!! Currently, as a last attempt, I'm trying 4mg of Avert twice a day which takes me to the max. daily dose of 8mg. I just started that today and haven't noticed anything so far but I'll keep going and see what happens.
AAARRGGGHHH ...
Still...no point in stressing about it, I'm just curious why they work for some people and not for others, and is there some correlation in the fact the neither work for me?
The next thing I will give a stab is Pro-Banthine, if I can get my doc to prescribe it - I have a feeling she already thinks I'm a bit of a case !
On a different note, I'm feeling a bit down again recently and hope it is not depression rearing it's ugly head. It's difficult dealing with this all the time. Sigh. Oh well, night all, Bridget.

I have been taking Avert for a couple of months now and it seems to work for me. It is not perfect and I can still sweat in some circumstances. I take 2mg 3 or 4 times a day. It depends on what I am doing, temperature etc. I find it takes a while to take affect, an hour or so, so I think smaller doses more often work best for me. I do get dry throat and eyes, I wear contact lenses so this is a pain. Try changing the dose and timings a bit more.
I also take St Johns Wort regularly which really helps me if I feel a bit down, it takes a few days to kick in but I find it really works. I really notice if I stop taking it for a few days.
It is starting to get hot here, London - UK, so this will be the first real test for the Avert!!!
Lots of love
Ken

Hi Bridget,
Just to answer your question about Avert and why it works for some and maybe not so well for others may depend on how well you absorb it. When glycopyrrolate is taken orally, it was found in several studies that its absorption is extremley variable.
I'm not sure how you are taking the medication in relation to food, but you may want to see if taking it on an empty stomach will improve its absorption. You may also want to space out the dose throughout the day (i.e. 2mg four times daily) if you experience any side effects. Let me know how it goes.

I like it. It's not perfect, but it helps. It works pretty well for my axillary HH at work, but once I walk outside or do anything social it's pretty useless... I take 2 mg first thing in the AM and another 2 mg around 10:30AM and that gets me thru the work day...
it does have "dry" side effects... like my hands are too dry to pick up papers and my mouth and throat get pretty dry but it's worth it to me...

I have had great success with Robinul. A little dry skin, and a dry mouth is a small price to pay, in my mind. Besides, it makes the beer taste better ;-} I also live in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region><st1:place>Canada</st1:place></st1:country-region>. Robinul is not available in <st1:country-region><st1:place>Canada</st1:place></st1:country-region>, so I went to the <st1:country-region><st1:place>US</st1:place></st1:country-region>. I had to see a <st1:country-region><st1:place>US</st1:place></st1:country-region> doctor to get a prescription, and then find a Pharmacy that had the pills. This was an expensive and frustrating process, but it worked! I have since ordered from http://www.pharmacy.ca . Same drug, no prescription required, and half the price. It usually arrives from across the country by Express Post in 1-2 days. You can find lots of great advice from Dipen, a phamacy.ca pharmacist in the archives of this group.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
I use the 2MG pills. Most days I take one in the morning. When I have a stressful early morning meeting I will take one the night before, and another when I wake up. On occasion I will take one in the afternoon as well.

Good Luck.<o:p></o:p>

Howya Andy,
I'm in much the same boat as yourself. I live in Ireland but i get Robinul shipped from America...here's the procedure:
You'll need to convince your GP to give you a prescription for a bottle of 100 Robinul Forte to fax to America.
Visit www.cyberpharmacy.com e-mail one of the girls in sales and explain your situation. They should tell you to fax over the prescription along with your credit card details. They usually take 1-2 weeks to arrive...they cost approx. $120 inc. p&p...i think they're well worth it.
Good luck,
Daragh

Dear robinulgirl,
Unfortunately, there is not much information concerning Robinul & pregnancy. This is definately a case of "do the risks outweigh the benefits?" The best thing to do is to discuss this matter with your doctor and between the two of you, you can come to an informed decision.

Hello everyone, I just had a quick question about Ditropan. Simply, does it work? I am currently on Robinul, and the effects aren't what I would hope during the summer. I can barely tell I am even taking it. Hopefully this is the heat and not that I am getting used to it. That brings up another question, I have been on Robinul for about 6 years, is there anyone that has been on it longer and it still works for them? I hope my body doesn't get used to it so much that it doesn't work.
Thanks you for your help, please reply to my email address, chaugsness@msn.com
Thank you,
Chris

I've heard of people being on Robinul for quite awhile.. I think if you take it in fairly small doses you shouldn't have much trouble.. but smaller doses aren't as effective. I tried to only take Robinul on the days I really needed it.. not just any day sitting around the house.... that way I wouldn't build up a tolerance..
Sorry, never tried Ditropan.

Hi, my name is Dipen (Deepen) Kalaria. I am a pharmacist in downtown Toronto, Canada, with a special interest in Hyperhidrosis (HH). We have a bricks and mortar pharmacy that is accessible via the web. Our pharmacy has a new way of using an old drug to control sweating. The drug is glycopyrrolate (it used to be sold as Robinul and Robinul Forte). It is a very old drug (sold for over 40 years in Canada) that was previously sold as a pill to be taken by mouth. At the request of physicians we now prepare Secure brand glycopyrrolate wipes to apply the drug topically for the management of sweating. We prepare it as a jar of 30 disposable wipes that are used for controlling localized sweating (it is not appropriate for generalized HH where sweating occurs over a wide area of the body - that is better controlled using oral glycopyrrolate(see below)).
Our patients have found our Secure wipes ideal for controlling facial sweating, whether it is brought on by public speaking engagements, stressful events, or certain spicy foods. The pads are also useful for sweating of the hands or feet.
It is very important to realize that glycopyrrolate is no magic bullet! In the ‘wipes’ form it can be used to manage localized sweating and in the capsule form it can be used to manage generalized sweating with minimal side effects. What patients must realized is that the percentage absorption of the drug, from patient to patient, is highly variable. This means that individual patients need to try varying doses to get just the right dose to manage sweating without the dry mouth side effect sometimes associated with glycopyrrolate. Our pharmacy makes a wide range of doses available to allow for titration to get just the right individual dose. For patients with generalized HH we prepare oral glycopyrrolate also in a wide range of strengths.
Our pharmacists are well versed in counseling patients in the management of their condition, via in-store visit, email, or toll free phone.
Best of all glycopyrrolate is not a prescription product in Canada so patients can deal directly with our pharmacy. To see the product and some more details on HH you can visit our website at www.pharmacy.ca or call us toll-free at 1-800-727-5048. Alternatively, I can be reached at pharmacist@pharmacy.ca.
If it was inappropriate to post to this discussion forum I am most sorry. From reading your guidelines and many of your member postings it seemed to me that any, truly useful information that could help members was welcome. Again, I want to stress that glycopyrrolate is not a magic bullet, different patients will have different success based on absorption, body weight (as effective dose can vary with weight), and the proper use of the medication.

Hi Wet head,
It seems like you are from Canada. Here’s a little background that might help. Wyeth Ayerst the manufacturer of Robinul stopped selling it in Canada about 12months ago, due to market conditions? As an approved medication any pharmacy could compound and sell glycopyrrolate. Unfortunately, most have never even heard of it let alone sell it (indeed there seem to be few informed people on the entire subject of HH). Most pharmacies aim to meet the needs of the average patient who needs the most common heart or stomach medication. They fill dozens of these prescriptions each day and do not go looking for the special needs medications or patients. Our focus is just the opposite. We do the regular meds but we also look for areas where we can make a difference.
I’m glad you found the website HH info useful, we are always open to suggestions on how to improve the content or our offerings.

Hi Subway,
You cannot get glycopyrrolate at most pharmacies in Canada. The brand Robinul is no longer available. Our brand 'Avert' oral and 'Secure' topical glycopyrrolate are only availble from us. This is because we are a compounding pharmacy and are therefore restricted from selling a compounded product through another pharmacy. (I wish we could, but thats the law). Because it must come from us we have tried to make it easy to deal with us. We have toll free phones and faxes, a website and a physical store, all to allow patients to reach us easily. Our prices are quite a bit better than the brand name product which is still availble in the US. Are you in Canada or the US?
Hope this helps,
Dipen K.
PS Glycopyrrolate does not require a prescription in Canada.

Hi Subway, sorry for the slow reply, I've been away from the site over the holidays.
The prices vary based on the strength. They can all be seen on the website using the quick search and using the brand name Avert.
For quick reference the price for capsules from 0.3 mg up to 1.2 mg the price is $45/100 capsules, from 1.3 mg up to 1.8 mg the cost is $53/100 capsules, and 1.9mg and 2.0 mg capsules cost $60/100. Shipping in Canada will be $5. If you are in Ontario, provincial taxes will apply. All prices are Canadian dollars.
Hope this helps, and again I am sorry for the slow reply.

Hi Ken,
I have not seen your email, I am curious as to whether I have an email problem? Did you send it to pharmacist@pharmacy.ca or my hotmail address?
Anyway, to answer your question, Robinul tablets are no longer available in Canada. The active ingredient is glycopyrrolate, Robinul is a brand. Our brand of glycopyrrolate is Avert and comes in a capsule rather than a tablet. The strength is the same, what's different is the brand.
Yes we can ship them to you in the UK. In fact we already supply a number of patients there.
The shipping fees to the UK are as follows, $10 Cdn for slow delivery (ground) and $30 Cdn for air (~10 days or less).
Hope this is useful info for you.

Hi Egi,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
Here are some quick answers but I would be glad to discuss more detailed questions in person on the phone.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Sweating on the hands and feet is harder to control with a topical preparation (the wipes) than sweating on the face and armpits. This is because the skin on the palms and soles is typically significantly thicker than that of the face and armpits making absorption more of an issue. That being said some people are well controlled on the topical. We have also very recently introduced a pluronic gel of glycopyrrolate that enhances absorption on the hands and feet but this product is not as estetically pleasant than the wipes. Generally, if a patient wants to try a topical for the hands and feet we will start at 2% wipes and escalate to the gel if necessary. In some cases patients have found the topical provides partial but not complete control of hand sweating and have supplemented with a low dose of oral glycopyrrolate.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Oral glycopyrrolate has been used for many years for controlling sweating. Glycopyrrolate belongs to a class of medications called anti-cholinergics. Of the medications in this class glycopyrrolate is preferred for sweating because it typically carries few side effects related to the fact it does not cross the blood brain barrier. The side effects most commonly seen relate to dryness of the mouth and/or eyes while using the medication. That all being said, not everyone experiences these effects. If you try the topical wipes or gels and still want to try the oral I could make a recommendation for a starting dose and work with you to find the correct dose. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Our oral glycopyrrolate goes by the trade name Avert, and our wipes are called Secure. All prices can be seen at our website, www.pharmacy.ca. Shipping charges do vary depending on where you live (Canada, US, EU or elsewhere) and depending on the speed with which you want to receive the goods. We do not charge excessive amounts for shipping, we simply cover costs based on the desired speed of delivery. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
You are correct that glycopyrrolate is available without a prescription in Canada. That being said, we do like to communicate with each customer about their sweating condition, previously tried products, allergies, etc. I would encourage you to email me at pharmacist@pharmacy.ca or call me toll free 1-800-727-5048 (Canada and USA).<o:p></o:p>
Hope this helps<o:p></o:p>

Dipen,
I recently received my order of Secure wipes (2mg) and honeslty they have not worked for me. I was using Drysol and switched to the wipes. I have been taking Robinul Forte(2mg) twice a day for many, many years and want to stop taking the medication due to side effects. I started taking half a pill at night , then a full one in the morning and things are just not good. Do you recommend using Drysol at night and then the Secure wipes in the AM. Would this cause problems?
I should probably get the highest dosage available as well..
Any help is always appreciated.
Sherrie

Hello Sherrie,
I'm sorry to hear that the Secure wipes are not working for you. While glycopyrrolate is helpful for many people, it doesn't always work for everyone. However, I would be interested in knowing where you are using the pads and did you mean Secure 2%? Depending on the area applied or if you received at least some relief, you may benefit from a higher strength. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you want to change your dose.
As for the Robinul Forte, you can split them in half to get 1mg and perhaps if you spread it out during the day, that might help with the side effects. (i.e. 1mg three to four times per day).
When using Secure and Drysol, I usually don't recomend using them together initially, because the latter might potentially prevent the former from being absorbed, but if you think it will help, I'm all for it. Let me know how it goes, I would be interested in knowing the results. Thanks.

thanks for your response. I did mean to say 2%, sorry.
So, you think if I spread out the 1mg Robinul throughout the day it will help with side effects? Even if the total amount taken ends up to be 4mg... what I typically take?
Interesting...
I will be calling you to discuss further.

Hi Sherrierad,
I should probably qualify my statement in saying that if you notice that you really experience side effects right after you take a 2 mg dose then maybe decreasing it to 1mg and spreading it out over the day may decrease the intensity (or peaks) of the side effects but not necessarily decrease it overall. That may or may not help, but it's something to try. Let me know how it goes.

Dipen,
i have a question about avert side effects. i know dryness is a side effect, what is typically dry (btw, im so glad my hands are dry!!) isnt it eyes, nose, throat?? im not sure what it typically is.. my eyes dont seem that dry, and my nose seems a little dry---BUT my throat is incredibly dry when i take my avert. ive only been taking them every other day, and i notice a considerable difference between the day i do take it and the day i dont. it is so dry my voice gets raspy! i was talking with a friend about it the other day, and they suggested it was the med making my voice like that. could this be and what could i do about it? i drank lots of water before, but especialy now, and chew gum or something that i think will be moist on my throat. i dont want to stop avert bc then i will be sweaty again! what can i do?
thanks!

Hi Cowgirl55
Can you remind me what dose you would take every day or every other day? Maybe a low dose of Avert such as 0.5mg to 1mg taken every day might be helpful. Avert come in several different strengths and we can try to tailor the dose that best suit you. Please don't hesitate to contact me by email or call me or Veronique at 1-800-727-5048 if you feel you can better explain it over the phone. Looking forward to hearing from you.

hi dipen,
thanks for responding. im currently taking the 2 mgs. i was thinking maybe if i decreased the dosage to 1 mgs my throat would be sooo dry?? im also wondering how this will work.. i read a post somewhere that stated that the dryness wore off after a month or so? is this true? if so, would sticking with the 2mgs help me better in the summer?
thanks

Hi cowgirl55,
Are you taking Avert 2mg once daily or more? You can try decreasing the dose to 1.5mg or 1mg per day if your total daily dose is 2mg. How long have you been taking the Avert for? If you've been on it for only a few days, and you can reasonably put up with the side effects, then I would suggest to keep on taking it for a least a week or two to see if the side effects will eventually go away. In the mean time, drinking sips of water throughout the day or chewing sugarless gum or candy may help with your dry throat. If not, decreasing the dose or stopping it altogether may be your only other option. Hope this helps.

Hey Dipen,
I have HH underarms, how well have the wipes worked for that? Thanks for sharing your info!
Reply
Recommend (0 recommendations so far) Message 87 of 90 in Discussion
The Secure wipes can be used for underarm HH. Usually, patients start off between 1-2% and if they require more control, higher strengths can be used. The efficacy of the wipes depends on several factors, such as how well you absorb the medication, the amount of medication being applied as well as how much you are sweating. Many people have found success with the wipes, but like any other medications, finding the right balance may require a bit of trial and error. Please don't hesitate to contact me at 416-960-7768 or 1-800-727-5048 (M-F 9am-6pm EST) or email me at pharmacist@pharmacy.ca if you have further questions. Thanks.

Hello, my name is emily and I suffer all over my body. Its really embarassing and at times, it has a bad odour, so I had to add to this discussion about Robinul Wipes. they look interesting and I would like to know more about them...I think i'll check out that site Dipen gave. Hopefully my daddy will be willing to try them out because he sweats all the time on his face, and their good for that right? But he might not get them concidering he already has gotten me the Drionic machine, just for my hands...I also have drysol but I'm too scared to use it after the bad experiences I last had with it....Bye
