Once an applicant's program has been submitted, it may not be changed
under any circumstances.
All vocal song repertoire must be performed in either original or

All candidates must bring a complete repertoire list (instrumental
and vocal) in addition to the list of required audition repertoire.
Applicants for the Bachelor of Music program should send two scores
of contrasting styles composed within the last two years. Each score
should be circumscribed to present the five minutes of music which
represents your most accomplished work. A tape which is cued to the
same section of music should accompany the score.
Applicants are encouraged to submit a short written statement which
describes the score or the process of composing the score.
Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from music
teachers.
A complete listing of the applicant's compositions with orchestrations
and dates of performances must also be submitted.
Graduate:

All applicants must audition in February. The primary qualifications
for admission are advanced musicianship, a marked aptitude for achievement
in the conducting profession, and a knowledge of the repertoire. Orchestral
Conducting auditions will be given only once during the spring.
Applicants must bring their own scores to the audition.
Each applicant must send the appropriate application forms, resume
and transcripts by December 1, 2002. No late or incomplete applications
will be accepted.
After preliminary review, selected applicants will be invited to
appear at The Juilliard School in February for examinations.
Examinations will be given in basic musicianship, score understanding
and terminology, various languages, transpositions, etc.
Following a review of the exams, selected applicants will be scheduled
for personal interviews. The interview will include knowledge of scores
listed in No. 6 below, determination of your major and minor instrument
proficiency, and determination of your ability to play from an open
score. You must bring your major instrument with you, and you must
be able to demonstrate piano proficiency.
A few applicants who have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in
the above categories will be invited to appear in front of an orchestra.

Applicants for graduate programs must also perform a composition
from the early Baroque or Renaissance period, the first or third movement
from a trio sonata of Bach, and an additional contemporary work.
Applications must be postmarked on or before Dec. 1, 2002. No late
applications will be accepted.
All pieces must be performed from memory. An exception may be permitted
in the case of some 20th-century pieces. Permission must be granted
by the Juilliard piano faculty upon request. Applicants whose programs
do not meet the following requirements will not be scheduled for an
audition.

CD or cassette tape with the application for pre-screening. The tape
should include required audition repertoire. Name and address should
appear on both the CD or tape and cover.
Please remember that the quality of your audition tape may significantly
affect the determination of the pre-screen jury. Try to avoid distortion
of the voice; excessive "buzz"; lack of balance between the piano accompaniment
and the voice.
The pre-screen and audition jury will be looking for a singer who
is able to combine musical and personal expression with good vocal technique.
Some guidelines are as follows:
Content – musical expression connected to the meaning of
the text; phrasing; accurate diction/musical preparation.
Good vocal line and intonation
Contrasting selections which show differences in language, style,
and period.
Please include a curriculum vitae and photograph if possible, and
do review your tape before sending it to ensure that it is of good quality.
Those invited to audition in person for the faculty are encouraged
to bring their own accompanists. If, however, you would like to use
a Juilliard accompanist for your audition, a list will be provided with
your schedule letter. You must contact an accompanist from the list
provided by the Office of Admissions two weeks in advance of your audition.
Undergraduate:
An Italian art song from the 17th or 18th century.
An aria from an opera or oratorio (optional for undergraduates).
One song in English (not a translation).
If English is not your first language, please prepare one song
in your native language.
A song by a representative 20th-century composer.
Another selection in any language if you choose to combine Nos.

Graduate:
Applicants for the graduate programs must be prepared to present
the undergraduate requirements as well as the following:
Two German lieder.
Two French melodies.
An aria from an opera or oratorio.
Applicants in Voice may be asked by the faculty to vocalize to
display their range. A melodic memory and sight-reading test may
be required as well. Applicants should be prepared to present a
dramatic reading of a monologue or poem. (The text of an English
song may be used.)
Juilliard Opera Center
All applicants are required to submit a standard cassette or videotape
with their application for pre-screening. The tape should include
the required audition repertoire.
Minimum age for admission as a Young Artist is 21. Applicants
must be prepared to sing five arias. One must be in English (not
a translation), one in Italian, and one must be in a representative
20th-century style. During the call-back audition, applicants will
be asked to further demonstrate their proficiency in singing in
Italian, French, English, and German. Applicants will be required
to present a dramatic monologue of their own choice and may be asked
to show their ability to take direction through the presentation
of this monologue. An interview exploring the applicant's artistic
goals may be required.
In auditioning and interviewing candidates, the faculty and administration
of the Juilliard Opera Center will look for the following:
A serious commitment to a professional operatic career.
A voice that is unique, beautiful, and/or useful for the operatic
stage.
A fundamentally sound vocal technique and well-developed basic
musicianship.
A theatrical sensibility, artistic personality, and physicality
that is suited to dramatic expression.
An ear for languages.
An ability to identify personally with a musical and dramatic
text.
Energy, openness of mind, enthusiasm, and a readiness to take
risks.
Personal maturity and a sensibility to the importance of being
a good colleague.

Graduate:
Applicants for graduate programs must perform a complete concerto
from the standard repertoire for double bass such as those by Dragonetti,
Vanhal, Dittersdorf, Koussevitzky, Bottesini, and a 20th-century work
(composed since 1939) such as the Hindemith Sonata or the Persichetti
Parable. In addition, applicants must perform several orchestral excerpts
of their own choosing. All music composed before 1939 must be played
from memory.
All undergraduate and graduate applicants not currently enrolled
at Juilliard must submit a standard cassette tape with the following
repertoire for pre-screening. Name and address should appear on both
the tape and the tape cover. Numbers 1 and 3 of the prescreening tape
should be unaccompanied.

contrasting with the above, such as the Classical period, or more

Two studies: No. 1 by Bochsa (Op. 34), Martonot edition, and No.

All applicants must audition in February. The primary qualifications
for admission are advanced musicianship, a marked aptitude for achievement
in the conducting profession, and a knowledge of the repertoire. Orchestral
Conducting auditions will be given only once during the spring.
Applicants must bring their own scores to the audition.
Each applicant must send the appropriate application forms, resume
and transcripts by December 1, 2002. No late or incomplete applications
will be accepted.
After preliminary review, selected applicants will be invited to
appear at The Juilliard School in February for examinations.
Examinations will be given in basic musicianship, score understanding
and terminology, various languages, transpositions, etc.
Following a review of the exams, selected applicants will be scheduled
for personal interviews. The interview will include knowledge of scores
listed in No. 6 below, determination of your major and minor instrument
proficiency, and determination of your ability to play from an open
score. You must bring your major instrument with you, and you must
be able to demonstrate piano proficiency.
A few applicants who have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in
the above categories will be invited to appear in front of an orchestra.

Personally expressive performances are encouraged, whether memorized
or not; however, one major work must be played from memory.

Graduate:
Applicants for graduate programs must also perform a composition
from the early Baroque or Renaissance period, the first or third movement
from a trio sonata of Bach, and an additional contemporary work.
Applications must be postmarked on or before Dec. 1, 2002. No late
applications will be accepted.
All pieces must be performed from memory. An exception may be permitted
in the case of some 20th-century pieces. Permission must be granted
by the Juilliard piano faculty upon request. Applicants whose programs
do not meet the following requirements will not be scheduled for an
audition.
Any changes to the audition program made after submitting the application
must be approved by the department chair.
Undergraduate: Bachelor of Music and Diploma
All undergraduate applicants must submit a standard CD or cassette
tape with the application. Current pre-college students are exempt.
The tape should include only Nos. 2 and 3 from the audition repertoire.
Name and address should appear on both the tape and the tape cover.
The entire audition program should reach a minimum of 45 minutes. Shorter
programs may be subject to approval by the piano faculty.

is chosen above, in which case a Romantic or 20th-century sonata should

Applicants for the D.M.A. must prepare all of the above graduate requirements
with the addition of a complete concerto by Mozart.
All applicants not currently enrolled at Juilliard must submit a standard
cassette or videotape with the application for pre-screening. Only selected
applicants will be invited to attend the personal auditions in March.
The tapes should include the following repertoire.
First movement of a cello concerto from the standard repertoire.

A slow and fast movement from an 18th-century virtuoso sonata such
as Francoeur, Locatelli, Valentini, Boccherini, Breval, etc.

A Popper etude from The High School ... Nos. 6, 20, 22,

A slow and fast movement from an 18th-century virtuoso sonata such
as Francoeur, Locatelli, Valentini, Boccherini, Breval, etc..
A 20th-century composition composed after 1950.
Graduate:
Applicants for graduate programs must also perform a complete concerto
from the standard repertoire for violoncello, such as those by Saint-Saëns,
Dvorák, Haydn, Lalo, or Schumann. (Performed from memory.)
All applicants not currently enrolled at Juilliard must submit a standard
CD or cassette tape with the application for pre-screening. The tape
should include required audition repertoire. Name and address should
appear on both the CD or tape and cover.
Please remember that the quality of your audition tape may significantly
affect the determination of the pre-screen jury. Try to avoid distortion
of the voice; excessive "buzz"; lack of balance between the piano accompaniment
and the voice.
The pre-screen and audition jury will be looking for a singer who
is able to combine musical and personal expression with good vocal technique.
Some guidelines are as follows:
Content – musical expression connected to the meaning of
the text; phrasing; accurate diction/musical preparation.
Good vocal line and intonation
Contrasting selections which show differences in language, style,
and period.
Please include a curriculum vitae and photograph if possible, and
do review your tape before sending it to ensure that it is of good quality.
Those invited to audition in person for the faculty are encouraged
to bring their own accompanists. If, however, you would like to use
a Juilliard accompanist for your audition, a list will be provided with
your schedule letter. You must contact an accompanist from the list
provided by the Office of Admissions two weeks in advance of your audition.
Undergraduate:
An Italian art song from the 17th or 18th century.
An aria from an opera or oratorio (optional for undergraduates).
One song in English (not a translation).
If English is not your first language, please prepare one song
in your native language.
A song by a representative 20th-century composer.
Another selection in any language if you choose to combine Nos.
3 and 4.
Graduate:
Applicants for the graduate programs must be prepared to present
the undergraduate requirements as well as the following:
Two German lieder.
Two French melodies.
An aria from an opera or oratorio.
Applicants in Voice may be asked by the faculty to vocalize to
display their range. A melodic memory and sight-reading test may
be required as well. Applicants should be prepared to present a
dramatic reading of a monologue or poem. (The text of an English
song may be used.)
Juilliard Opera Center
All applicants are required to submit a standard cassette or videotape
with their application for pre-screening. The tape should include
the required audition repertoire.
Minimum age for admission as a Young Artist is 21. Applicants
must be prepared to sing five arias. One must be in English (not
a translation), one in Italian, and one must be in a representative
20th-century style. During the call-back audition, applicants will
be asked to further demonstrate their proficiency in singing in
Italian, French, English, and German. Applicants will be required
to present a dramatic monologue of their own choice and may be asked
to show their ability to take direction through the presentation
of this monologue. An interview exploring the applicant's artistic
goals may be required.
In auditioning and interviewing candidates, the faculty and administration
of the Juilliard Opera Center will look for the following:
A serious commitment to a professional operatic career.
A voice that is unique, beautiful, and/or useful for the operatic
stage.
A fundamentally sound vocal technique and well-developed basic
musicianship.
A theatrical sensibility, artistic personality, and physicality
that is suited to dramatic expression.
An ear for languages.
An ability to identify personally with a musical and dramatic
text.
Energy, openness of mind, enthusiasm, and a readiness to take
risks.
Personal maturity and a sensibility to the importance of being
a good colleague.
