Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! On this Solemnity of Pentecost, we are called to contemplate the gift of the Holy Spirit, which was poured out in abundance upon the early Church and is bestowed anew upon its members today, granting us light and strength throughout our everyday circumstances.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 오늘 성령 강림 대축일에 우리는 성령의 선물에 대해 관상하도록 부르심을 받습니다. 성령은 초대 교회에 풍성히 부어졌고, 오늘 교회의 구성원들에게 새롭게 주어져서, 우리 삶의 모든 상황을 통틀어 우리에게 빛을 비추고 힘을 줍니다.

Let us reflect on an image of the Spirit that today’s liturgy sets before us: the Spirit opens doors. The Gospel, in fact, tells us that “the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews” (Jn 20:19). At the same time, the book of the Acts of the Apostles tells us that the Spirit came like a mighty wind (cf. Acts 2:2), which opened those doors, impelling the disciples to go out and proclaim the Good News of the risen Christ.

오늘의 전례가 우리에게 제시하는 성령의 이미지에 대해 묵상합시다. 성령께서 문들을 여십니다. 사실 복음은 우리에게 이렇게 전합니다. “제자들은 유다인들이 두려워 문을 모두 잠가 놓고 있었다.” (요한복음 20,19) 동시에 사도행전은 성령이 거센 바람이 부는 듯이 오시어, (사도행전 2,2 참조) 그 문들을 열고, 제자들을 내보내시어 부활하신 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 전하게 하셨다고 말합니다.

We can ask ourselves: what doors does the Holy Spirit open today? The first door is that of God himself, for the Spirit gives us access to the mystery of God, as revealed in Jesus Christ. Through the gift of his Spirit, God grants us true faith, helps us understand the meaning of Scripture, reveals himself as our neighbor and allows us to share in his very life. The Holy Spirit helps us to have a personal experience of God, to encounter him in Jesus and not merely in the observance of a law, to recognize him within us, and to discover the signs of his presence in daily life.

우리는 오늘날 성령께서 어떤 문을 여실까 자문할 수 있습니다. 첫 번째 문은 바로 하느님 자신이신 문입니다. 성령께서 예수 그리스도 안에서 드러난 하느님의 신비에 접근할 수 있도록  우리를 인도하시기 때문입니다. 하느님의 성령의 선물을 통하여 하느님께서 우리에게 참된 믿음을 주시고 우리가 성경의 의미를 이해하도록 도우시고, 당신자신을 우리의 이웃으로 드러내시고, 우리가 당신의 생명을 나누도록 허락하십니다. 성령께서는 우리를 도우셔서, 우리가 하느님과의 개인적인 만남을 체험을 하고, 예수님 안에서 하느님을 만나고, 단지 율법을 지키는 데 그치지 않고 예수님 안에서 하느님을 인식하고, 우리의 일상생활에서 하느님의 표징을 발견하게 하십니다.

The second door is that of the Upper Room, that is, of the Church. Without the fire of the Spirit, the Church remains a prisoner of fear, timid in the face of the world’s challenges, closed in on itself, and thus also incapable of entering into dialogue with changing times. The Spirit opens the doors of the Church so that it can be welcoming and hospitable to all, even to those who have closed their doors on God and neighbour, on hope and the joy of living. As Pope Francis recalled, we are called to be “a Church that blesses and encourages… The doors of the Church are open to everyone” (Homily at the Opening of the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, October 4, 2023).

두 번째 문은 다락방, 즉 교회의 문입니다. 성령의 불이 없다면 교회는 두려움의 포로로 남아 세상의 도전에 겁을 먹고 스스로를 폐쇄하여 변화하는 시대와 대화할 수 없게 됩니다. 성령께서는 교회의 문을 여시어 교회가 모든 사람을 환영하고 환대하도록 하십니다. 교회가 하느님과 이웃, 희망과 삶의 기쁨에 문을 닫아버린 사람들도 환대하도록 하십니다. 프란치스코 교황이 말씀하셨듯이, 우리는 “축복하고 격려하는 교회… 교회의 문은 모든 사람에게 열려 있습니다.” (2023년 10월 4일 주교 시노드 정기 총회 개회 강론)

Finally, the Holy Spirit opens the door of our heart, helping us to overcome resistance, selfishness, mistrust and prejudice, while enabling us to live as children of God and brothers and sisters to one another. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, fraternity is born among individuals, groups and peoples of the Earth, and all speak the same language of love, which unites and brings harmony despite our differences.

마지막으로, 성령께서는 우리 마음의 문을 열어주시어 저항, 이기심, 불신, 편견을 극복하도록 도우시며, 우리가 하느님의 자녀로서, 서로 형제자매로서 살아갈 수 있게 해 주십니다. 주님의 영이 계신 곳에, 개인과 단체, 그리고 지구상의 민족 사이에 형제애가 싹트고, 우리의 다름에도 불구하고 모두를 하나로 묶고 조화롭게 하는 똑같은 사랑의 언어를 말하게 됩니다.

Brothers and sisters, even in our own day, especially on this day of Pentecost, we must invoke the Holy Spirit and ask him to open all the doors that are still closed. We need to rediscover God as the Father who loves us, so that we can form a Church where everyone feels at home, and build a fraternal world where peace reigns among all peoples.

형제자매 여러분, 우리 시대에도, 특히 성령 강림 대축일인 오늘, 우리는 성령께 청하여 아직 닫혀 있는 모든 문을 열어주시도록 간구해야 합니다. 우리를 사랑하시는 아버지 하느님을 재발견하여, 모든 사람이 편안함을 느끼는 교회를 이루고, 모든 민족 사이에 평화가 다스리는 형제애 넘치는 세상을 건설하도록 합시다.

Like the first disciples, we entrust ourselves to the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Dwelling of the Holy Spirit and Mother of the Church.

처음 제자들처럼, 저희도 성령의 거처이시며, 교회의 어머니이신 성모 마리의 전구에 저희 자신을 의탁합니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, Today marks the Day of Prayer for the Church in China, which occurs on the feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians. She is venerated with great devotion at the Sheshan Shrine in Shanghai. Let us join our prayers with those of Chinese Catholics as a sign of our closeness to them and their communion with the universal Church and with the Successor of Peter. May the intercession of the Queen of Heaven obtain for the community of believers in China the grace of unity and grant them the strength to bear witness to the Gospel in their daily struggles, so that they may be seeds of hope and peace. In particular, I pray for the eternal rest of the victims of the accident that occurred recently in a mine in northern China.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 오늘은 그리스도인의 도움이신 복되신 동정 성모 마리아 축일에 맞춰 기념하는 중국 교회를 위한 기도의 날입니다. 중국 상하이의 서산 성지에서는 성모 마리아를 큰 신심으로 공경합니다. 중국 가톨릭 신자들에 대한, 그리고 그들의 베드로 후계자와의 친교에 대한 우리의 친밀감의 표시로 중국 가톨릭 신자들과 함께 기도합시다. 하늘의 여왕이신 성모님의 전구를 통해 중국 신자 공동체가 일치의 은총을 얻고, 일상의 어려움 속에서도 복음을 증거 할 힘을 얻어 희망과 평화의 씨앗이 되기를 기도합니다. 특히, 최근 중국 북부 광산 사고 희생자들의 영원한 안식을 위해 기도합니다.

To Mary Most Holy, Help of Christians, we also entrust the Christian communities of the Holy Land, Lebanon and the entire Middle East, who are suffering due to the ongoing conflicts.

지극히 거룩하시고 그리스도인들의 도움이신 마리아께, 저희는 또한 계속되는 분쟁으로 고통 받는 성지, 레바논, 그리고 중동 전역의 그리스도인 공동체들을 의탁합니다.

And now I extend my greetings to all of you, the faithful of Rome and pilgrims from various countries! In particular, I greet the group of people with disabilities from Poland, as well as the pilgrims who came by bicycle from Kelmis, Belgium – well done!
