Summary:
God’s kindness is shown to those who remain in faith, but His severity falls on those who fall away. Believers must continue in His kindness or risk being cut off. Unbelieving Jews, if they do not persist in unbelief, will be grafted back in, for God is able to restore them just as He grafted in Gentile believers.
Teaching:
Our God is love. He shows us mercy, and in showing mercy, He is patient and loves us to the end. He does not turn away from our groaning but helps us.
And God, who is love, is also righteous. Therefore, His love is revealed in righteousness. When He loves us, He does not give us anything unjust, unlawful, or evil.
If we know the stories of God’s stern judgment toward Israel, we must hold on to the gracious stories of His kindness toward us. It depends on our faith. God has chosen us to live by faith, but if we become lukewarm toward Jesus, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, we too should fear that we might be cut off like Israel, the original olive tree.
