POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, SOLEMNITY OF THE HOLY TRINITY, St Peter's Square, Sunday, 31 May 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! The Easter season concluded last week with the Solemnity of Pentecost. Today, we celebrate the Mystery of the Triune God, which offers us the opportunity to reflect on the journey we have made. We begin with God’s life which was given to us in Christ Jesus. This life is a dynamic, inexhaustible and faith communion that draw us in. Indeed, the Spirit who unites the Father and the Son has been poured into our hearts. In this way, the Church becomes a sacrament of communion, a place of encounter, love and life where heaven and earth already touch.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 기쁜 주일입니다! 지난주 성령강림 대축일로 부활 시기가 마무리되었습니다. 오늘 우리는 우리가 걸어온 여정을 되돌아볼 기회를 주는 삼위일체 하느님의 신비를 기념합니다. 우리의 여정은 그리스도 예수님을 통해 우리에게 주어진 하느님의 생명으로부터 시작됩니다. 이 생명은 역동적이고, 무궁무진하며, 우리를 끌어당기는 믿음의 친교입니다. 참으로, 아버지와 아들을 하나로 묶으시는 성령께서 우리 마음속에 부어지셨습니다. 이렇게 교회는 친교의 성사, 만남과 사랑과 생명의 장소가 되며, 그곳에 이미 하늘과 땅이 닿아 있습니다.

Today’s Gospel (Jn 3:16-18) introduces us to Nicodemus, an important person in Israel who felt a profound attraction to Jesus. Indeed, eager to better understand this mysterious Teacher and to ask him questions, Nicodemus went to find him at night, so as not to be seen. The Lord welcomed him and took his search for answers seriously. Jesus surprised Nicodemus by suggesting that it was even possible for an adult to be reborn and led him to realize that the life of God could transform his own life. When Jesus spoke about the Holy Spirit, Nicodemus’ interior darkness was illuminated with the truth –– the same truth that resounds throughout the Church in our celebration of today’s feast: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (vs. 16). And again: “God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (vs. 17).

오늘 복음 (요한복음 3,16-18) 은 예수님께 깊은 매력을 느꼈던, 이스라엘에서 중요한 인물인, 니코데모를 우리에게 소개합니다. 이 신비로운 스승을 더 잘 이해하고 질문하고 싶었던 니코데모는 남들의 눈을 피해 밤에 예수님을 찾아갔습니다. 주님께서는 그를 반갑게 맞아주시고 그의 질문을 진지하게 들으셨습니다. 예수님께서는 어른도 거듭날 수 있다는 말씀으로 니코데모를 놀라게 하셨고, 그가 하느님의 생명이 그의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있다는 것을 깨닫도록 이끄셨습니다. 예수님께서 성령에 대해 말씀하실 때, 니코데모의 마음속 어둠은 진리의 빛으로 환하게 밝아졌습니다. 이 진리는 오늘 우리가 기념하는 삼위일체대축일에 교회 전체에 울려 퍼지는 진리와 같은 진리입니다. “하느님께서는 세상을 너무나 사랑하신 나머지 외아들을 내주시어, 그를 믿는 사람은 누구나 멸망하지 않고 영원한 생명을 얻게 하셨다.” (16절) 그리고 다시, “하느님께서 아들을 세상에 보내신 것은, 세상을 심판하시려는 것이 아니라 세상이 아들을 통하여 구원을 받게 하시려는 것이다.” (17절)

Dear brothers and sisters, in the Mystery of God –– Father, Son and Holy Spirit –– we are at home, just as Nicodemus felt at ease when he was in Jesus’ presence. The life of God is marvelous and captivating; it gives peace to our heart, which is often very restless, and it allows us to encounter our brothers and sisters in the joy of the Spirit. The Trinity helps us to love everyone and everything: we discover that every creature is made for communion, relationship and encounter. On the other hand, we understand why division, polarization and contempt for diversity bring destruction, sadness and barrenness to the world.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 하느님의 신비, 즉 성부, 성자, 성령 안에서, 우리는, 니코데모가 예수님과 함께 있으면서 편안하게 느꼈듯이, 편안함을 느낍니다. 하느님의 생명은 놀랍고 매혹적이며, 종종 불안한 우리 마음에 평화를 주고, 성령의 기쁨 안에서 형제자매들을 만나게 해 줍니다. 삼위일체는 우리가 모든 사람과 모든 것을 사랑하도록 도와줍니다. 모든 피조물이 친교와 관계, 그리고 만남을 위해 창조되었음을 깨닫게 해 줍니다. 반면에, 우리는 왜 분열과 양극화, 그리고 다양성에 대한 경멸이 세상에 파괴와 슬픔, 그리고 황폐함을 가져오는지 이해하게 해 줍니다.

Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin, the council of the high priests of Israel. When he heard contemptuous words directed at Jesus in the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus urged everyone to listen first before condemning him. He had received the Spirit of communion from God through Christ himself, which opens the heart to new truths and to true renewal. Whoever does not welcome this Spirit grows old quickly, in sorrow, feeling all alone and without joy in their hearts. Instead, today, dear brothers and sisters, is a day of celebration. God’s feast is also ours. For this reason, Saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians, saying: Rejoice, strive for perfection, encourage one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you (cf. 2 Cor 13:11).

니코데모는 이스라엘 대사제들의 공회인 산헤드린의 일원이었습니다. 산헤드린에서 예수님을 경멸하는 말을 들었을 때, 니코데모는 모든 사람에게 예수님을 벌하기 전에 먼저 예수님의 말씀을 들어보라고 권했습니다. 그는 그리스도를 통해 하느님으로부터 친교의 영을 받았는데, 이 영은 새로운 진리와 참된 쇄신에 대해 마음을 열어줍니다. 이 영을 받아들이지 않는 사람은 슬픔 속에서 빠르게 늙고, 마음속에 외로움을 느끼며 기쁨이 없습니다. 그러나 사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 오늘은 기쁜 축하의 날입니다. 하느님의 축제는 또한 우리의 축제입니다. 이러한 이유로 사도 바오로는 코린토인들에게 이렇게 썼습니다. “기뻐하십시오. 자신을 바로잡으십시오. 서로 격려하십시오. 서로 뜻을 같이하고 평화롭게 사십시오. 그러면 사랑과 평화의 하느님께서 여러분과 함께 계실 것입니다.” (코린토 2서 13,11 참조)

And now, with the prayer of the Angelus, we turn to the Virgin Mary: like her “yes” to the Divine will, may our “yes” to the love of the Most Holy Trinity also bear fruit.

이제 우리는 삼종기도와 함께 동정 성모 마리아께 향합니다. 성모 마리아께서 하느님의 뜻에 “예”라고 응답하셨듯이, 우리도 지극히 거룩하신 삼위일체의 사랑에 “예”라고 응답하여 풍성한 열매를 맺게 하소서!

Dear brothers and sisters, In this month of May, a united chorus of prayers for peace has resounded throughout the Church.  Above all, through the prayer of the Holy Rosary – like an unbroken chain – the peoples ravaged by war have been entrusted to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.  May Divine Wisdom enlighten the consciences of those in authority and guide their decisions toward a sincere search for a just and lasting peace.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 이 5월 내내, 교회 전체에 평화를 위해 하나 된 기도의 합창이 울려 퍼졌습니다. 무엇보다도, 거룩한 묵주기도를 통하여 - 끊어지지 않는 사슬처럼 - 전쟁으로 고통 받는 모든 이들이 동정성모마리아의 전구에 맡겨졌습니다. 하느님의 지혜가 권력자들의 양심을 밝히고, 그들이 정의롭고 영원한 평화를 진심으로 추구하는 쪽으로 결정하도록 이끌어 주소서!

Today, Italy celebrates the 25th “National Day of Relief.”  I offer my spiritual closeness to the sick and those who care for them; and I thank and encourage all who promote a culture of solidarity and care.

오늘 이탈리아는 제25회 "국가 구호의 날"을 기념합니다. 저는 병든 이들과 그들을 돌보는 이들에게 영적인 응원을 보내며, 연대와 돌봄의 문화를 장려하는 모든 분들에게 감사와 격려의 말씀을 드립니다.

I warmly greet all of you who have gathered today in Saint Peter’s Square, both Romans and pilgrims! In particular, I welcome the Bishop and the pilgrims from the Diocese of Kumba, Cameroon; as well as the parish choir from Dunajska Luzna, Slovakia.  I greet the Poles present and the participants in the great pilgrimage to the Shrine of Piekary, where Mary is venerated as the Mother of Social Justice.

오늘 성 베드로 광장에 모인 모든 분들, 로마 시민 여러분과 순례자 여러분 모두에게 따뜻한 환영 인사를 전합니다! 특히 카메룬 쿰바 교구의 주교님과 순례자 여러분, 그리고 슬로바키아 두나이스카 루즈나 본당 성가대 여러분께 환영의 말씀을 드립니다. 또한 폴란드 국민 여러분과 성모 마리아를 사회 정의의 어머니로 모시는 피에카리 성지 순례에 참여하시는 모든 분들께도 인사를 전합니다.
