Coming of the Son of Man and the Flood of Noah
"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. "For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. "For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be. Matthew 24:36-39
It is not difficult to understand the comparison with Noah's flood, given that the coming of the Son of Man often signifies an end. However, in our hearts, the coming of the Son of Man may be more readily accepted as the Tower of Noah than as a flood. However, by examining the parable clearly, we can see that the coming of the Son of Man is compared to a flood rather than an ark. By recognizing this, we can understand the Lord’s intention revealed to us through the passage.
First, if we view the coming of the Son of Man as a process of change in the self’s awareness in which it is accomplished in individual character, then the meaning of it coming “like the flood” emphasizes that the timing is unknown. But here is a clue. Even angels do not know, and even sons do not know, but only the Father knows. And there is one exception to knowing that timing. It was something not included in eating, drinking, marrying, or getting married; in other words, those preparing the ark could not know the right time.
Since the timing was made unknown, one might think that it was left to us to know, as it is not necessary to know it. Therefore, what is ultimately important in today’s passage is not knowing the timing, but preparing the ark. Then, just as Noah prepared an ark for the flood, what should we prepare while waiting for the coming of the Son of Man? Now, let's turn our attention to the ark.
What you mentioned most importantly about the ark was its structure. The external specifications make the actual box the most stable device on the rippling water. But there is one important condition. It is a decree to make the ark a three-story structure. That purpose was not mentioned at all. Only the three-story structure was mentioned. However, this three-story structure is also discussed as an important feature in other parts of the Bible.
When building the temple, He also commanded that it be built in three stories. (1 Kings 6:8) However, although the tabernacle, the prototype of the tabernacle, is a single story structure, both the tabernacle and the temple are composed of three sections. These are the outer court, the Holy of Holies, and the Most Holy Place. This three-tiered structure is also related to the third heaven mentioned by Paul. However, in relation to the coming of the Son of Man, it is difficult to view Noah the Ark’s three-tiered structure as a stage of faith, as some have thought.
Because the Ark is already in the chosen state, which is the deepest stage, having the lower stage of salvation participate there creates a structure of inherent contradiction. This is the same error as interpreting the three disciples of Mount Transfiguration as representatives of each stage of faith. Therefore, we must reflect again on the three-tiered structure of the Noah’s Ark and the temple through the Lord’s word. The three-tiered structure of the ark and the temple should rightfully exist within a single person.
A proper understanding of this can be found in another structure mentioned by the Lord in the same chapter, namely, obtaining from fleeing. These are all different facets that exist within each person's individual character. And the whole of it forms the ark together. All of this preparation comes from our awareness of ourselves in our daily lives. Those in the bond of ties should flee to the mountains; those on the roofs should not make themselves objects, and those who serve in the fields should be called by spiritual gifts rather than by titles.
