Summary:
Paul teaches believers to respond to others with love and humility. When faced with persecution, they are to bless rather than curse. They should share in the joys and sorrows of others, living in harmony without pride, being willing to associate with the lowly. Instead of retaliating, they are called to pursue what is honorable and, as much as it depends on them, to live peaceably with everyone. Vengeance is not theirs to take but belongs to God. Even toward enemies, they are to show kindness—feeding the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty—so that goodness, not evil, has the final word. In this way, evil is not allowed to prevail; rather, it is overcome through good.
Teaching:
As we live, we must always hold firmly to this truth: vengeance belongs to God. Vengeance against people must be entrusted to Him. What we are called to do toward others is to love even our enemies, bless those who persecute us, weep with those who weep, and rejoice with those who rejoice. This is what it means to keep to the measure of faith.
When we know God’s love, the wounds we have received are healed, and the spirit of revenge melts away. Never repaying evil for evil is something we must remember all our lives. The way to overcome evil is not retaliation, but to bless, to help, and to conquer it with good. Only good can overcome evil. This is the faith of offering ourselves as a holy living sacrifice. To live in this way is what it truly means to be a believer in Jesus.
